It's the same thing as calling the writer's of the old testament, "ignorant/illiterate Bedouins".
It's an Ad Hominem criticism fallacy, that tries to escape actually considering the point of the text.

I will compile something that took nearly 40 years of comparing such statements all through history. Muhammad is thought to have been illiterate in a way he was not, and St. Anthony of the desert could read and write, but had attended no academic classes. All Jewish boys and girls could read and memorized the first five books of the Hebrew scriptures.
It'll involve more than citations to show you what is clear to many that are well read on these matters. Even men that could speak, read and write in many languages and were articulate were called unschooled for lacking the certifying commendations of a verified teacher.
Back then, in that society, literacy meant knowing the history of a written (and accompanying oral) tradition.

The same could be said of a lot of countries in Asia, but I think Americans are even less used to those. Perhaps Zimbabwe is one of the worst choices in Africa he could pick as such an example, haha. I don't know much about Africa, but maybe South Sudan, Zambia, and Ethiopia could be better choices to pick. But, for the sake of the argument, none of those are important, as long as the audience knows the country, but doesn't know much about education there.

      Cory C
Yahweh the Source of all Creation and life, is the influencer behind all scripture! The text makes it clear that no created being is "Good" in themselves, goodness comes from it's source and it is written over and over again that Yahweh is "Good."
Even the Son, Yahushua the Messiah who was led to choose Matthew the Tax collector said "Why call me good, there is only ONE good, the Father." The Bible is clear that we cannot love/serve Yahweh and Money, only one can be our Master.
The New Testament indicates that the occupation of “tax collector” was looked down upon by the general populace.
Yahushua said about a person who sins against a believer, yet claiming to be a believer, who remains unrepentant when corrected,
to “treat them as you would a gentile or a tax collector” (Matthew 18:17). A person outside of the Faith, "The Way".
The main reason is, the love of money, greed, corrupts, and it is historically known that tax collectors cheated the people they collected from. They would collect more than required making themselves wealthy at the expense of others. The Torah has much to say about fair weights and measures and Usury laws.
Given the low esteem people had for tax collectors, it is noteworthy that Yahushua/Jesus spent so much time with them. The reason: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners” (Mark 2:17).
"Considering the Bibles purpose is to give structure to the world it wouldnt surprise me"
The Bible's purpose is to lead mankind to the Messiah the Son of Yahweh and the Son of Man, so that through him we can be "Good."
Abiding in the Messiah and learning to walk as he walked causes the Goodness of Yahweh to dwell within, causing us to be Good people.
      Shalom/peace

@John Daedalus how is slavery immoral? Humans by far are the crappiest and most selfish species on this planet and being free to do what we please has been the only reason why rape, murder, lying, and theft etc etc is a thing because we have the freedom to do such things so how do we deserve any kind of freedom just to abuse it like we do and have? The prison system in of itself is just another slavery system so slavery in of itself in no way has been abolished.
How is cancer and diseases Gods fault?
Why would eternal bliss be impossible?
Whats so confusing about the bible?

    • @maow9240
      @maow9240 Před 5 lety +4

@John Daedalus way to dodge answering the question man. You are appealing to majority practically letting others tell you what to think but regardless, there are several countries where slavery is still legal ,alive and thriving namely India which has more slaves than the population of the Netherlands.
So far from what can be gathered by your comments is your argument against slavery is calling slavery immoral because its immoral which is a circular argument. An atheist i spoke with 2 months again told me "just because you don't like something doesnt mean its wrong" and that's what you currently have against slavery practically calling it wrong because you dont like it. Saying something is wrong because its wrong or because others say its wrong is not an argument.
If you study the bible you would see it encouraged people to treat slaves better then most people know about slavery today. which it tells masters to give to their slaves what is just and equal. Even not to threaten their slaves. Tells them about granting slaves freedom for abuse and damages done to them and tells people to help run away slaves by not returning them to their masters and letting the slave live with them untill the slave finds a place to make his home to his liking. So there is more to slavery, especially biblically, then the strawman most atheist make it out to be. Just look at the slave version of the bible(yes that is a real thing) which takes out all the stuff i just mentioned to you and more just so the American slave owners could keep their slaves from knowing the truth which is a big reason why american slavers wanted to keep slaves illiterate. They keep slaves illiterate so they couldnt learn the truth themselves and editted out things to give slaves that could read misleading information to keep then ignorant to the truth.
So back to the question. Why do you think slavery is immoral? Like i said the human race is the crappiest species on the planet so why do we deserve the freedoms we have just to keep abusing those freedoms?
Cancer and diseases is only a product of consequences. Consequences are only possible because of freewill. Freewill is useless without consequences. The only way for God to get rid of consequences is to get rid of freewill and without freewill then we would be just robots. Without consequences for what's done wrong we wouldnt be able to fully appreciate things that are right. So basically complaining about consequences really only means that someone doesnt want to suffer the consequences for their own actions that they used their freewill to choose in the first place : /
Eternal bliss, well we will just say heaven since that's what we are talking about here. Another circular argument you are placing by the way. Heaven is offered to all but it's not Gods fault if people don't accept. Hell is a seperation from God for those who dont want to follow God and trust Him. Hell is a choice. Hell existing in no way negates heaven or eternal bliss. Eternal bless is offered to everyone. Dispite the major flaw in your logic that doesnt include the fact that eternal bliss/heaven is offer to everyone and we will look at an example simply using the logic you are currently going with. If i have a dollar and offer it to someone else other than you and they take the dollar does that mean the dollar doesnt exist all because i didnt offer you the dollar? Of course the dollar exist!! The dollar existing in no way dependent on you being offered thr dollar so to be honest that argument against heaven is irrelevant no offense.
The good ol' hundreds of thousands of denominations argument. Its only that way because of what people want versus what the bible actually says. Humans are the error not the bible here. If people, chirstains included, would actaully study and read the bible for themselves they would see how comprehensive it truly is. Again i ask what's so confusing about the bible?
From the age of 10 for around 20 years i myself was an atheist.what. found in those 20 years, which through those i had the same objections like you have presented here, is that atheism in of itself comes from a more emotional side of things then it does intellectually. Your interactions in the conversation pretty much shows that. Emotions is one of the main things that causes people to react irrationally more than anythng so reallying on emotions to guide your views like the majority of atheist is a pretty irrational concept that atheist dive into. Sam harris, hitchen, matt dilahunty and even aron ra are good examples of emotionalism in the atheistic viewpoint.

At 4:15, the speaker suggests the possibly that Matthew’s Gospel was originally written in Hebrew and was translated later on (word-for-word) into Greek. I’d like to support this theory by showing how Matthew’s Gospel uses a particular figure of speech that is frequently found throughout the written-in-Hebrew Old Testament, but is never used in any of the other written-in-Greek New Testament books.
In the verse of Matthew 4:2, the author writes that Jesus spent "forty days and forty nights" in the desert, but when Mark 1:13 and Luke 4:2 refer to the same event, they only state that Jesus was there for "forty days" and say nothing about the nights. Later, in Matthew 12:40, the author quotes Jesus (who spoke in Hebrew) saying that since Jonah spent "three days and three nights" in the whale’s belly, so would the Son of Man spend "three days and three nights" in the heart of the earth. And yet, none of the other Gospels ever recite this particular quotation and instead quote Jesus saying numerous times that He would resurrect "IN three days" (that is, ‘within’ three days) or stating that He would resurrect ON the "third day."
All too often, certain groups will try to use the verse of Matthew 12:40 to argue that the "three days and three nights" was meant to be taken as a literal 72 hours which obviously cannot be fit into the time frame of the Friday afternoon when Jesus died and the Sunday morning when He rose again. Hence, they argue that Jesus was actually killed on a Wednesday afternoon and rose again on a Saturday afternoon just before sunset.
Yet, anyone who studies the scriptures properly will be able to easily recognize that the Old Testament (Hebrew) phrase of "[#] days and [#] nights" is definitely NOT meant to be literal, but is only used when describing a period of great dramatic importance or a time of great sorrow. For when examining each of the examples scattered throughout the Old Testament, we see that the "Forty days and forth nights" of rain in Genesis 7:12 were very dramatic and significant, as were the two times that Moses spent "forty days and forty nights" on the mountain with God (Exodus 24:12 to 31:18), and likewise for the "forty days and forty nights" that Elijah spent journeying to Mount Horeb while fleeing from those who would kill him (1 Kings 19:8-10). We can also recall from Job 2:13 that when Job’s three friends came to visit their inflicted friend, "they sat down with him upon the ground ‘seven days and seven nights’ and none spake a word unto him, for they saw that his grief was very great." Lastly, we can see that the "three days and three nights" where the young abandoned Egyptian was starving in the field (2 Samuel 30:12) were also days of great physical suffering, as were the "three days and three nights" that Jonah spent in the belly of the whale (Jonah 1:17).
The point here is that Matthew’s Gospel was originally written for a Hebrew-speaking audience who was well-versed in the Old Testament (Hebrew) scriptures and who properly understood how such a figure of speech in that language was to be interpreted. Such an audience would have thus known that Jesus was not in the grave for a literal 72 hours and have understood that the phrase of "three days and three days" was only being used to emphasize the dramatic significance of His death and resurrection. Other audiences, however, who spoke Greek but not Hebrew, would not necessarily have understood such a figure of speech, which is why none of the other New Testament writers ever used it.
When Matthew’s Gospel was eventually translated from Hebrew into Greek, it was obviously translated word-for-exact-word, which, for the most part, is a good thing. Unfortunately, the word-for-word translation of the phrase in Matthew 12:40 has been exploited over the years by splinter cults, and so I hope my words here today will help expose them for the deceivers that they are and help lead everyone to the truth.

@@13tuyuti In answer to your question, let’s assume for a moment that the expression “40 days and 40 Nights” or “3 days and 3 nights” does indeed occur in the Septuagint translation of the Old Testament and that Matthew’s Gospel was originally written in Greek. So what? Other research has shown that Luke used the Septuagint when writing his Gospel and the book of Acts, and yet neither of these works, which were both originally written in Greek of course, ever used this expression. The reason for this is because, as I mentioned in my original posting, non-Jewish/Greek readers would have been confused by such a phrase which is why all the other New Testament writers apart from Matthew (who wrote for a specific Jewish audience), avoided using it. Hope that helps.

Hello there. I often watch Frank Turek, and it is always an encouragement and a blessing.
Regarding this question, on the one hand, it is enough to say that Bart could not have known whether the apostles were educated or not. When Acts says that the Sanhedrin noted that Peter and John were "unschooled, ordinary men" (Acts 4:13), that is almost the same as saying that someone did not go to college today, or more correctly, that such a person is not trained in a specific way. For example, in those days, Paul was lettered or schooled because he studied under Gamaliel. There was a formal track to be taken in order to be reckoned as educated and, of course, refined and sophisticated. But that did not mean that those who didn't take it were not literate. They simply would not be considered "experts" by the "experts."
To go further, as Dr Turek says here, Luke was a historian and a doctor. So, obviously he was literate. Matthew was also a tax collector. Even in those days he would possess the ability to make records and communicate to his Roman superiors. And considering that Greek was the lingua franca of the empire, there is no reason to think that he couldn't read and write Greek. And he did write his Gospel in Greek. Mark, when he was young, was associated with Paul who was educated, so he may have learned to read and write if he didn't already know how to (which is not certain that he wasn't either). Even barring that, there is no reason to assume that he could not read and write.
I would say that Bart has no leg to stand on to make this argument.

This question about Greek language for the New Testament is misleading. Greek was the common international language of the day much like English is the common language of the modern era. Alexander the Greek conquered the area 300 years before the time of Christ and it became the widespread official language. Antiochus Epiphanes (164-175BC) viciously imposed Greek culture on the Israelites on pain of death. Greek was THE language of commerce during the time of Jesus. So, many 'uneducated' people were at least bilingual or better. (Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Hebrew) would be the usual order of lingual facility. D. Utley do you actually believe there is an argument that will work with someone who doesn't believe in God? Perhaps these types of answers may shut down their points of objections but I don't believe it will ever convince them of God. It may shut them up momentarily but it doesn't change the heart. I don't claim to be a theologian or scholar but my understanding from the Bible is that there is enough evidence of God around us and the lack of belief is a heart issue not a mind issue. I think that is clearly outlined in Romans. It also says in John 3:20 also says, "For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed." That seems to be the real objection. We want to live as we please so we constantly create our own versions of God (whether they call it god or not) to follow. You also said that non-believers need more than "the Holy Spirit made it happen", so how would you use logic and reasoning to explain what happened at the Pentecost to a non-believer?

If you're talking to a non-believer, you probably aren't talking about "what happened at Pentecost" in the first place. Dr. Turek deals with primarily 'big picture' issues when it comes to Christianity. If you've seen enough of his videos, you'd know that. And you'd know the kinds of questions non-believers are asking, versus the kinds of questions Christians are asking. Only a Christian would bother asking "what happened at Pentecost" because we're already part of the faith, and now we're talking about details.
If I'm not sure I believe Jesus even existed (a lot of atheists are in that camp), the question of the Pentecost is pointless. It's far more fruitful to discuss the historical evidence for the existence of Jesus, or the account of the Gospels, or the early Church, or to talk about how incredible it is that the Church exploded under insane persecution, etc., or to talk about the insane number of new testament manuscripts we have and how that can't be said for any other letter in the history of mankind, and so on.
My initial response was to your statement "that's my problem with this type of approach to 'apologetics.'" Well, apologetics is giving a DEFENSE of the faith. I don't think Dr. Turek needs to defend Christianity against other Christians, but he does work to defend it against skeptics and atheists, and he does an amazing job. What you seem to be looking for is not apologetics, but something else. And my faith doesn't hinge on knowing the mechanics of Pentecost, or the parting of the Red Sea, or how, exactly, any miracle happened in the Bible.

Many of the New Testament books were written with the use of a scribe or what we might call a secretary. As the story is told be the Gospel writer someone else is actually writing it down. Very often their knowledge of Greek was superior to the writer himself. And if you want to know how I know this as you ask me in the previous question, here's how. The fact that Frank never mentioned is that the Gospels were not written in "educated" Greek. Only Luke 1:1-4 was written in literary Greek, all the rest of the four Gospels were written in the common Greek of the day. Many scholars have noticed Hebraisms throughout he Gospels. These are Hebrew ways of communicating written in Greek. There is no problem thinking Matthew (Levi) Mark, Luke and John wrote the books that bear their names.
