i sailed the bay of biscay in a force 10 storm, i was on a cruise ship heading from France to the UK and the captain warned us of what we were sailing in and i found it bloody frightening. My hat goes off to these people who have to work in this all the time.
One day, going through the Bay, we were in the Pantry, serving lunch and it was rough. Someone left the hotplate doors open and 50 stacked plates slid out, landed on the deck and went up and up and down for two minutes, while we held onto the rails. You can imagine the noise!
Sailed through a force 11 in the Bay of Biscay on a 45 ft sailboat, January 1988. Stood watch for 72 hours straight, on pure adrenaline, thinking every swell was my last. There was a ship 1/4 mile off our port bow that was steering by wire. Found this video while trying to explain what it was like. Curious what the height of the bridge of this particular vessel may be.
Oakleaf700, The Bay of Biscay is often rough because of westerly Atlantic winds; but it's also because of converging currents from Atlantic, Irish Sea and English Channel. Third reason is because it's actually quite shallow. All three factors make it a dangerous combination.
It is really only rough sea. Nothing ralated to the stormy weather. Usual condition of the Northern Biscay. The vessel looks like a coaster. Probably Irish Arklow Shipping or one of hundreds dutch ships crossing this area each weak. The man looks happy. Not any signs of fear od even bad feeling. 😎

I know some people who wanted to be sailors but in the end , they chose another job. I understand them and, hell, I'd couldn't do better.. I think I'd panic in such weather, really.
Actually deep water with big waves is a lot safer than shallow water with big waves hence why British waters are so dangerous. 3000 miles of open Atlantic and then funneled into the Irish Sea around Wales leads to 45' waves being fairly common.
Beautiful, scary video. At 1:53 a breaking wave hits the ship and after the sound of the initial impact there are softer crunching sounds and water is coming through the foc'sle where it didn't seem to have before. Was there any damage to the vessel? I Love this video and am amazed at the courage of these sailors and the faith they have in their ships. You all have my respect.
Continental shelf with v steep edge, shape of landmass (large parabolic stretches of coast focussing reflected energy back offshore), intense mid latitude lows scrunching into the Azores high, backed up by stable Continental high pressure zones, long fetch to windward, strong cross-slope tidal currents. The tallest (not most massive) surf waves are off the N coast of Portugal, at the southern extent of the B of B. An underwater canyon off Nazaré amplifies already large swells.

The Bay of Biscay is cursed with an ocean floor that transforms into an underwater vertical wall, that rises from -15.000 feet to -2.500 feet in only 25 - 50 miles. All that water from the Atlantic, pushed onto the shelf has no other way than to shoot straight up. Bordered by Ireland, France and the NW section of Spain, the Bay is shaped as a triangular funnel, which also radically enhances wave heights.

Great video. The Bay of Biscay is an unforgiving place to find yourself in a big storm. I love the music by the way!!
Seriously, this is a very large sea-hope you all got home safely.
Very nice movie! The ship is seaworthy enough. So small, but still stable in such huge waves!

Great vídeo and good músic. thanks for sharing.
An interesting insight into a storm so thanks for posting, and thanks for the wave at the end it humanises it. :)
she looks quite seaworthy.... glides across those big waves pretty gracefully.

beleive you do not have much faith in the ship in those moments you just try to do your best to get out of there ;)
I doubt there was any damage to the vessel. I've seen these types of was on a 550 foot long oil tanker on Lake Superior. This storm is what it is..
James Craig boom.....
All I heard was another shitty soundtrack ruining a decent video.
I have sailed my 45 foot jeanneau across Biscay twice. We would not survive conditions like that. How frightening.
Poor seamanship then.
How big where the waves? And when (which month) did you face it?

Why is the Bay of Biscay so rough? it is famously so.
strong winds from the west, different currents (Irish sea, english channel and atlantic) and pretty shallow water. Dangerous combination....
