The Mustang still kept up pretty damn good for tryin to hang with a Lotus, especially bone stock on all seasons. A real testament to The Stig's driving skills.
Pretty sure the Stig could beat most everyone by driving a zucchini.
A $25k 2+2( a grand touring car in euro parlance) vs a $45k dedicated sports car?
US prices obviously
Wonder which is faster on a track?
@Tommy Senpai my 2012 v6 camaro is more powerful than that "v8" Mustang. lol
Considering the fact here in America you can get a Mustang GT less than 10k and those lotus are near extinct and expensive af. The Mustang is the better option. I would love if lotus made it more competitive and affordable though m.
@@drudgenemo7030 In Europe though, the Mustang is at least $10k more expensive than in the US because of homolgation/import costs and tariffs. Conversely, in the US, the Exige gets penalized with the same additions to its MSRP because it's imported from Britain. You're never really going to get a fair comparison unless Ford sets up a Mustang assembly line in Europe.
This is my favorite Lotus. The Exige looks so much nicer than the Evora. The Evora is nice, don't get me wrong, but the Exige just looks more properly unhinged, mad.
Nicer than an Elise too
Tbh i prefer the Evora, looks more modern and as sporty as it's antecesors
The Evora is pure porn, it's got such elegance, the Exige more raw, I like both very much regardless with a preference for the Evora. Especially that thick 400R version . Damn it's sexy.
The Exige is purely a drivers car, darn near impossible to get in and out of lol.
However, the Emira 😍
'This is sushi vs a hamburger' Lol!
RPKVids more like tea vs soda
RPKVids rather have the hamburger lol
Kuntry_boy24 rather have a Lotus.
id rather have pizza
RPKVids He is right!
Sushi: small, light, agile and, above all, raw! Just like the Lotus!
Hamburger: big, heavy, unwieldy and fills you well! Just like the Mustang!

Everyone likes to rave about how its a Toyota engine. Buts its a toyota engine that Lotus have breathed on, so plenty of chances to introduce things that can go wrong :) I still want one though. With a Toyota engine.
@@throwback19841 what toyota engine?
@@interextated The toyota sourced engines used in the Exige since Series 2 onwards that they reference in the episode?
Hennessy built the Venom from the Exige not the other way around. In fact, the Venom's chassis is still manufactured in the UK.
You actually register the Venom GT as an Exige.
So you’re telling me it took the Americans to finally make a british car good?
Laundry Basket did you watch this whole video? The gt500 posted a slower time and thats a far newer car
Oliver Dance I was talking about the venom gt. Funny enough though, the new gt500 can outperform all it’s european and Japanese competitors
Laundry Basket eh not really. The GT500 doesn’t really have any true European competitors, and with the stock brakes it’s not really suited for track use. Zl1 1LE is still the better car, I’d get a gt350r instead
In my honest american opinion. Most Mustangs are straight line cars.
or oval track-based cars
What Mustang handles well? In the entire history of the mustang, some 54 years, I can’t think a single one that handles the corners like a proper sports car. They have gotten progressively better in almost every respect and there have been dozens of special models and upgraded offerings from other manufacturers but I can remember no Mustang that could be described as “handling well”.
The Lotus Elise/Exige/Evora, as well as it’s sisters cars the Toyota MR2 and the original Tesla roadster all handle extremely well and are no slouch in the power department either. They are proper mid-engined sports cars.
This is not a fair comparison.
@@negativeindustrial The current Mustang does quite well in corners. Obviously few are going to beat a Lotus, but I'd bet it's comparable to an M4. The lower the trim the better the Mustang does in tight corners because of the weight balance, but I'd guess the GT to be the ideal balance of power and balance - although I'd take the flat plane of the GT 350 over the cross plane of the standard GT.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 Having driven both the Cyclone V6-powered Mustang and the GT (2016 and 2017 years of each respectively) I personally preferred the former. 300HP is still plenty of power, and as you mentioned the weight distribution is better so it's easier to control. GT's unquestionably faster in a straight line and the engine sounds better, and for the purposes of being a sports car it's superior in almost every way, but as far as overall balance goes the V6 was definitely better. Dunno about the I4 since that's both heresy and the only engine option I haven't driven, but I'm not sure it'd be possible to compare the two in the same way due to the different induction types.
@@GintaPPE1000 I have driven the EcoBoost and the v6 (in 2016) and the ecoboost doesn't feel nearly as fast even though it makes more power. I feel like it's because the turbo is so small though. The EB gives a good feeling up to about 3500/4000 then it feels like it's falling on it's face. The v6 also gives a pretty good take off feeling from the get go but feels like it gets stronger as it revs and makes it more exciting to floor it and use the entire power band. Ultimately I chose an very nice and clean one owner 07 GT premium because it liked the look more and it gave me extra money to put full bolt on's and install cams.
This Exige is my absolute dream car. I can only imagine how fun it is to drive

The mustang, probably a rental, is a daily driver. 1000 mile road trips with the wife kinda thing. 1000 miles in the lotus? 😂😂😂. Yes you can turn the mustang into a track car, for the difference in price probably spank the lotus honestly, but not exactly the same target demographic for the two cars. And a lighter car will always "feel" better anyway.

Don't the gt mustangs make like 800hp now?
+JoshIsParty No, the 2017 has 435hp. It's a lot better than this Mustang with better suspension to go with the power. A redone version with the new models would be awesome, at the very least the new Mustang would put up a far better fight than in this video.
+Yun2Kx I was thinking about the 2018 hellcat that makes about 800hp. and the 2017 shelby gt's make 527hp or something
and at least give it a 5.0 or something
On a track it would still be smoked
The Lotus is one of my absolute favorite sports cars, it's light, super fun to drive and surprisingly reliable due to the Toyota engine, also it looks beautiful.

He was referring to it being a rear engine ,rear wheel drive, so the power coming from the rear was going to the rear
Ning3n what does that have to do with anything?
Luna Tuna He said it on the Mustang, not the Exige. Thus, your assumption is wrong. It's front engined, rear wheel drive.
I come back to this video some years later and still can not help but notice just how close the Mustang was to that Lotus at the end of the race.😲

“Triumph of British engineering” with a Japanese engine?
Yup 👍 want a medal or something ? It’s just an engine mate
That engine is a unit out of a Corrolla with a supercharger. Pit an Exige against a supercharged Corrolla and it will outperform it in every single way. The engine is not the point of this particular car, the chassis is.
@@VeraTheTabbynx Still proves Lotus can't make a reliable engine to save their ass.
@@RCXDerp Aside from all the times they did exactly that, such as the powerplant in the successful Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, or while not entirely their own design, the heavily altered Opel unit that powered the insane Vauxhall Lotus Carlton, and the fact that world renowned engine constructor Cosworth was formed by former Lotus employees.
Maybe the triumph was admitting to themselves that japanese engines had better engineering. I know isuzu ... and others... paid lotus to do suspension so it can go both ways.

Love the Exige so much. Would love to own one some day.
Such an awesome segment, Reminds me of my 2016 MX-5 ND Miata VS a trash talker in his S197 V6 Mustang on some backroads. Needless to say, He got absolutely gapped.

Me to, I've got it in the matrix, awesome engine and car.
@Texan Distributist Christopher Dorner is rotting in the Earth. While the good cops that put him there are still walking around. 🤣🤣🤣
A good friend of mine used to own an Elise. At the same time he also had an RS4 - the one with the 420 horse V8 that revved to 8000 rpm. I drove both cars for a few days. There is no question about it: the Audi was faster. But the Lotus felt so much better in spite of its 190 Celica engine. It was such a special experience, and that steering feel... it's just magic! And it FELT faster!
Now, Mustang is a good car that's cheap in the States. But the Lotus is just in a different class altogether.
Haha, come to New Zealand. I literally have seen a motorised couch driving the road, and its 100% legal here!

These seem to be two different classes of cars. One you can get almost anywhere, the other is pretty rare. One has room, luxuries, practicality, and a fairly comfortable ride. The other is a Lotus... Only the Esprit was like that for me, and it honestly didn't seem very good from a quality standpoint. Most British cars don't really have a good quality or reliability about them. As it seems, Japan and now Korea have a monopoly on reliable vehicles now. The U.S just has some reliable trucks now, and even those are becoming exclusive to only the diesel ones. Props to the guy in the Mustang for keeping up as well as he did. I wasn't expecting it to be as close as it was...
The only thing that the Exige Vs Mustang battle proved was that the person who was the Stig that time is one hell of a driver. Was that Ben Collins?
Love how all the Americans inmediately feel offended by this race

As an American I was offended to see a mustang on the same track as that beautiful car. A mustang is a dime a dozen and has very little going for it but a couple extra horses.
They're completely different cars tbf. Kinda unfair to compare them on a track
Have you ever driven one supercharged? Fuckin crazy
+JC Jacquet Nonsense. As a European i think the Mustang is an amazing car and the lighter isnt always the best. Only in this case.
the mustang did surprisingly well to keep up as good as it did!
The Ford also has rear seats, Air Conditioning, a stereo, and a spare tire. It probably weighs twice the Lotus.
This American absolutely adores the Lotus philosophy of “what can you do without”, it’s minimalist, the way cars SHOULD be!
No stupid automatics/DCT/DSG/sludgeboxes/CVT (manuals forever!)
No stupid nannyware or driver “assists” that encourage lazy/distracted driving
No stupid cushy suspension, you need to *feel* the road
No sound deadening, you need to hear the car communicate with you
It’s basically a modern Ferrari F-40 or a motorcycle with four wheels, it’s you and the car, as it should be
The size comparison at 03:12 ! Holy! Mustangs are giants! Or Lotus are delicate, I don't know. The differences in the looks are incredibly vast; one is as intimidating as the armed police and one looks like a jet pilot.
+AkairuFuyuNoAme I drove both and the difference is vast the mustang feels like a fast boat in comparison
+Luna Magazine No you haven't
+themegaloft I Said I drove both not owned both it is very easy to get your hands on the mustang to drive and a Lotus can be easily driven if you go to a dealer especially if you already have the means to purchase it, or are you strike up a good conversation with the manager at the dealership and he takes an interest in letting you see how the car drives (apparently that second Demario is how my friend back in London got in one)
My first comment was rather brief so I never said that I do believe that a Lotus is significantly a better drivers car than the mustang for what I want out of my sports car.
so the lotus is the jet, but where's the intimidating as the armed police one?
kenny olivo Well, I drive a 2001 VW Lupo. Almost every car can be considered "intimidating" next to my rather cute one.
to those bringing the ford GT into the argument: the GT costs about 2 times more the exige S... if you want a fast car and don't care about comfort and everyday use (which a ford gt wouldn't give you either), nothing tops lotus, except for caterham, but these guys are even less practical. that has nothing to do with nationality, it's simply that these cars were designed to be fast on tracks, and that's exactly what they are. also, in terms of drag racing... 4 seconds to 60. no way the mustang could have kept up on a quarter mile!
givemeajackson in what country does a GT cost more than the Lotus? In the US a brand new GT cost the same as a used 10+ year old Lotus basically

You could buy two of those Mustangs for the price of one of those Exige's. It's ridiculous that they are equal in any capacity.
