    Cut-Rate Commander - Precon Upgrade Guide for Draconic Dissent & Firkraag, Cunning Instigator from Battle for Balur's Gate #MTG #commander #edh
    The Dragon Mastermind Firkraag, Cunning Instigator joins us today as our 2nd Battle for Badur's Gate precon face commander, bringing along with him his dragon flight and aiming to turn the battlefield into his own personal playground as he turns our opponents against each other for his amusement and profit.
    In this precon upgrade we’ll be primarily aiming to refine our selection of dragons to give Firkraag plenty of draconic brethren to proc his goad as they take over the skies and crash into our opponents, as well as additional sources of goad, forced combat payoffs, and ways to protect our commander and top end dragons to ensure Firkraag and his dragon flight outlast the mortal races of under our opponents employ as they tear each other appear for his amusement.
    Let me know if the comments below if you agree with my choices and/or what you would add to the deck instead. Also, let me know know who you would like to see next by voting on in the comments on the three choices of commander listed at the end of the video.

    I dunno what it is, but this deck seems like a ton of fun. Probably because it combines dragons, treasures, draw, and forced combat shenanigans, all cool things that are even better together.
    Also whenever you cut Temple of the False God I smile to myself. It's such a trap card, it's only good in a few decks but so many people splash it in everywhere.

    This is a cool list. I found dragon decks take some heat so I enjoy the defensive slumbering dragon. Also Awaken the Sky Tyrant, Crucible of Fire, and Cursed Mirror (coming down in price) are solid cards in their own right but provide nice little mini combos with astral dragon that can really make you pop off instead of getting like 3 sol rings or something.

      Slumbering Dragon can certainly be considered, but can take some time to get online, especially since we have lots of goad to keep attacks off us, and Awaken the Sky Tyrant, Crucible of Fire, and Cursed Mirror are all solid incudes to get us some extra dragons and dragons synergies for us to take advantage of. Good suggestion!

      @@GrazzetMTG you say that, but I would argue that they probably do exactly what you do to an extent but simplified because they just throw in filler cards. I recently tried getting back into mtg and I have been purchasing pretty much every Previn that comes out and I have learned that it’s borderline impossible to build a total commander deck with just purchasing precondition because up to a certain point they lack diversity. Land base is copy and paste not to mention a portion of the deck is not ideally suited for the strategy the commander is trying to focus on. I would pay extra for your builds if precondition were made with that level of care and consideration for strategy, price and enjoyment. I truly love your videos.

    • @GrazzetMTG
      @GrazzetMTG  Před 2 lety

      At its heart, I think Firkraag benefits the most as a dragon tribal deck with goad, while Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer is more a voltron commander that goads the board as a payoff for making him bigger. I would love a chance to build around him personally, since he seems like a deck build.

    Now as for my opinion on the next precon to be upgraded... Party rock is in the house tonight!

    • @GrazzetMTG
      @GrazzetMTG  Před 2 lety

      Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the support as always!
      That is a good question. If I could create any walker, I think I would look into creating a mono white planeswalker with a restrictive mana cost (lets say CMC 4 with 3 or 4 white pips - to make it hard for non mono white decks to make use of it easily) that really focused on the "catch up" mechanic white seems to be focusing on to get value. Lets say their +1 draws a card if any player has more cards in hand than we do and creates a tapped treasure if a player has more lands in play then we do, their -2 creates a 0/4 defender that has "whenever an opponent player casts their second spell each turn, gain 1 life and draw a card", and their -7 ultimate creates an emblem that says "whenever you tap a plains for mana, draw a card, gain a life, and create a treasure"

      Welcome back to magic!
      As far as power level goes - Exit to Exile has a higher power ceiling than this precon does. I've played both and the boards that Exit to Exile can set up are absolutely insane. That said, this build is plenty powerful in its own right since there is a lot of goad and dragon support in both its colors while the commander provides card advantage and disruption.

    The precons on my area have averaged 50, so just keep in mind regional differences in pricing when looking at your budget. Thankfully, 10 bucks extra isn't too much of you're getting this deck to upgrade and play with generally speaking. Though your personal situation may vary.

    • @GrazzetMTG
      @GrazzetMTG  Před 2 lety +1

      Fair point. Sadly I can't account for all regions, so my prices are based off the cheapest prices I can find online - in this case the Game Nerdz set of 4 for $140 (making them $35 each) and the CoolstuffInc Prices of $40 for each precon if bought individually.

      If we want to add some serious value with just 2 card, Utvara Hellkite and Terror of the Peaks are about $50 between them and are very solid in the build. Otherwise, some of the cards I mentioned in the upgrades for the build like Manaform Hellkite, Atsushi, the Blazing Sky, and Scourge of the Throne would all help bring up the decks power level.

      Ur-Dragon sadly would not be legal in the 99 this build do to its 5 color casting cost - so the only way to make it work would be replacing the commander and that would really change the deck drastically, making it not really worth it (in my opinion).

  • @hallorette5059
    @hallorette5059 Před 2 lety +1

    I think taking out Curse of the Swine is a mistake. Sometimes your opponents have creatures you can’t get through effectively or whose abilities are too annoying to have them stay around. Especially if they have tap abilities. Creatures with tap abilities are very dangerous if goad is your main countermeasure to creatures, because your opponents can always opt out of an attack they are not interested in doing. Curse of the Swine handles them, along with troublesome indestructible creatures, and the number of flyers you added to the deck makes Curse of the Swine more powerful, not less. Taking out Niv Mizzet, Parun is also a weird choice. That card draws you so many cards, spellslinger deck or not. He’s guaranteed value, because most spot removal triggers his draw ability.
    I do like the inclusion of all the extra dragons, because more flyers means more opportunities to goad.

    • @GrazzetMTG
      @GrazzetMTG  Před 2 lety

      Fair joints. Curse of Swine can be very good when dealing with hard to remove creatures to creatures that we can not force to attack due to tapping themselves down - which if your running into a lot of may make it worth adding back in over another damage based wipe.
      As far as Niv Mizzet, Parun is concerned - I will stand by my decision to remove him as , while he is certainly a powerful card, that 6 colored pips makes him difficult to cast even if we're only in 2 colors - at times making him dead in hand while we wait to draw into our 3rd source of blue/red mana. He can be a powerful source of card advantage if we can cast him and he sticks around though, so if you want to add him back in to try him out I can certainly see why.
