      @@Jaxv3r I 100% share the sentiment. If they give us a refresh with a more colour accurate screen, larger battery, and a slight bump in the CPU side of things while keeping the crazy low wattage efficiency, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Would be my dream PC handheld.

      For me low wattage performance is the key reason to own a handheld, it lets me play the games I’m playing no matter where I am. That’s why I bought the steam deck after waiting for the ROG Ally reviews came out. Simple thing is, till MS creates a different and lighter version of windows, it isn’t fit for a handheld. It’s too inefficient.

      @mechanicalmonk2020 Před rokem +7

      Elden Ring on launch had shader compilation stutter which Valve was able to avoid by simply distribution a shader cache (like they do for all games).
      The frametime spikes were small enough to not be noticeable on a VRR display, so while they existed on my desktop I never noticed them. I certainly didn't think playing it 720p and 30fps on my deck (remember this was before the refresh rate switching) was a better experience than 4k and pretty much 60 on my desktop

    • @thehumanracesucks1017
      @thehumanracesucks1017 Před rokem

      @MechanicalMonk I'm not the one that wrote the articles or lauded it as such. I'm just merely stating that MOST people had issues on release, I wasn't one of them & I'm in the same boat as you, but that doesn't diminish the fact that most people aren't technologically savvy enough to tweak windows setting & game files to achieve 4k 60fps on launch. So I'm just pointing out that steams decks integration team got a HUGE PR boost because elden ring ran well on the steam deck at launch. So whether they did much of anything is mute, the point being is the PR and user satisfaction with the device started off well due to it being a fantastic way to experience the biggest new game at the time.

It ran so poorly they took out dynamic weather effects completely, they removed volumetric fog completely, and disabled dof. They turned all of these off for about a week to fix performance issues. I don’t doubt that the ally is slightly more powerful but the fact that you yourself got a defective product is already a huge red flag for me since I also tried getting teo different devices for ROG products which were both defective, my sister also tried getting one of their laptops and even that came with a heating problem that would have killed it in the first week. I was expecting the same things to happen when I got my steam deck but everything’s been working great. Really happy with my steam deck, definitely need to be ready to play new games and revisit some old favorites with it, can’t set your expectations too high when it comes to handheld performance. The FPS drops on battery versus plugged in on the Ally, and based on the Processor. ROG will vary on battery, so not really a good comparison with the Deck which maxes out at 15W. I have experienced better FPS/Perf on my Ally v.s Deck. Also keep in mind that Ally uses UHC-II SSD vs UHC-I on Deck depending on where you stored the games. I also have a ton of time on Elden Ring Steam Deck. So Elden Ring is basically never going to hit a consistent 60. You can watch the Digital Foundry video about the game, but basically it's engine issues. Where the differences will show is when you try to push it and it hovers either at, above, or below 30. So if you put the Steam Deck at 1080p (external monitor required) and High Settings you'll notice a huge difference in actual performance with a more capable system, in this case the ROG Ally. I'm not sure the Theoretical Performance will differ terribly but you'll be able to tell if you go fight a caravan betting pulled by giants in each game from that save file. Unfortunately, this is an Elden Ring issue and the best to be said on the topic is actual performance, ie your word vs mine. My word is that in Elden Ring's specific case, you can push a much smoother 1080p High experience on the Ally than the Deck.
    I'm not as familiar with any strange ins and outs with the other titles you chose but this is a fair and professional video, well done.

I had to get a temporary code sent to me and Microsoft sent me a 6 digit code instead of a 7 digit code that they were asking me for. Then I had to reset my password in order to get in. I got in then I was bombarded with updates and finally, after a bios update the Ally would randomly boot to BIOS and I would have to hard reset my unit which in most cases, if done enough, harms the unit. If you guys own a steam deck and look in the description of certain games, some games are literally optimized to reduce power usage and run better on steam deck. Thats why the deck gets a higher FPS on certain games. Saw another comparison video explaining this for games like Resident Evil 4 Remake where the Steamdeck had a more consistent 30-40 FPS on the same settings as the ROG.

    I don't know if this is your device, or if I just wasn't looking at your settings hard enough. I tested a couple of those same games, and cannot recreate your low performance. I also did notice in No Man's Sky you were running borderless instead of fullscreen which may affect things. I also didn't set what mode you had the screen refresh rate set to, if it was anything but 120, you aren't using VRR.
    You should test Witcher 3 if you have it, it's a game that will definitely use whatever performance is available. When I play on deck, at low settings, fsr balanced, I'll get 35-55fps. I live in a country where it's at the moment not sold officially and idk if I should try to buy it used/overseas or wait for a revised version of the steamdeck with (hopefully) better screen or minor updates. I do value good screens a lot (as in reduction of ghosting/blurring and good black levels)

    • @robblack8754
      @robblack8754 Před rokem

      Steam Deck's screen is pretty bad and it's probably the main thing that is making me look to getting an Ally, even more than the better compatibility of Windows vs Steam OS. Reasons why it is bad:
      -it uses pulse width modulation to control the brightness and at a low enough frequency that anyone that may be sensitive to this will get eye strain and headaches if the brightness isn't at 100%. Also can't run it at 40Hz because it's there too regardless of brightness. I didn't even know I was sensitive to pwm until I got my Deck and started to get a headache within 15 minutes and did research. What iI do now is I have the brightness at 100% and then adjust things with the Vibrant Deck plugin to lower the actual brightness I see by tweaking the rgb gamma values it has. I have them at 40-45-ish.
      -its sRGB gamut coverage is horrible, something like 68%. Colours look pretty washed out which is something you can see in some of this video
      -its contrast ratio is pretty mediocre and something you can easily see in this video.
      -it comes with a way too high colour temperature/white balance set at just under 8000K so things are too blue and it's not easy to calibrate or accurately adjust this
      -it has a bit higher response time so there is more blur with movement than there should be
      -its touch screen performance is so laggy and is garbage
      All in all, they skimped on the screen which was a very silly move on their part. They could have put in a half decent screen, increased the price by 50 bucks and nobody would have complained. Instead, they went this route skimping on arguably the most important part of it given it's what you look at and if you look around, you'll see it is the main hardware thing people complain about regarding the Deck and an almost universal opinion of how bad the screen is when people finally compare it to something with a decent screen like the Ally.
      It's probably not the worst screen I have experienced in a laptop or mobile device but it isn't too far off and had I known it was this poor, I wouldn't have got the Steam Deck. I kind of discounted the few who were really bashing the screen when I was researching the Deck close to a year ago before ordering. I should have listened to them and not the people that acted like the screen was still pretty good.
      Given what you said and what you want, I would NOT recommend the Deck at this time. Either wait for the Deck 2 or see if the Ally will light a fire under Valve and get them to change the screen on future Deck production.
