Vietnamese people in Prague?
Don't get confused by this title, there is actually a massive Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic -- especially right here in Prague!
I remember when I lived in Prague 7 years ago that there was a lot of Vietnamese restaurants, but I never really dug deeper to find out why they were here. And now, I've realized that many of them came to Czechoslovakia during the communism period to work or study, and then when communism fell in the early 90s, they never left.
Here is the full story of the Vietnamese influence of Prague, which I find to be fascinating and incredible.

Vietnamese mini marts are actually so common in the Czech republic, that people use the frase "I'm going to the Vietnamese" more often than "I'm going to the mini mart"
Omg I am Vietnamese Canadian and when I visited Prague I was shocked at how many of my ppl were there!! Thanks, now I know why
there full Vietnamese your mixed. so technically your not part of "their people".
@Cool Monxter yup.
@Cool Monxter that depends if the person selects to have Canadian citizenship.
Even us locals don’t know it
Very bad
An interesting detail is that the Viets of Czechia are primarily from Northern Vietnam, while the Viets of the US, Australia, etc. are primarily from Southern Vietnam. That is why the Vietnamese district in Prague is referred to as 'Little Hanoi', while in the US and other counties, it's 'Little Saigon'.
I'm Vietamese and actually i can't believe there is a big Vietnamese community in a Europe country with high position and an important role in Czech sociaty, proud of that ❤
I am from Prague and just the shop across my street is run by Vietnamese guy :-)
Mate, im vietnamese and moved to murica for 6yrs already and this is the first time i heard of this place lol xD
My friend is half viet half polish and I see a lot of vietnamese restaurants run by vietnamese people in Poland. I hope they are feeling good there
There was a wave of migration from Vietnam to my land in end of 80'. They come to help our heavy industry. Some more clever reach our high schools, .... Tday, they stay there, have Families, work together...usually they sell us fastfood, which is yummy, or sell us everything what we need on daily basis, and they do it seriously cheap....no one is perfect, but i know Vietnamese as worthy, or more, they are great Peoples!!!
We love our Vietnamese brothers and sisters!! If only every immigrant nations and cultures could be as awesome as Vietnamese people!
The vietnamese population is one of the largest in the world, and they are not only in Prague but everywhere, i live in a small western Czech town (6000~ people) there are vietnamese people here too.
even little villages have some Vietnamese mini markets, they are really everywhere
Actually... Czech people might be called racist, but... we really like vietnammese comunity and vietnamese people here in czech republic... they work usually in mimi-markets or on some public markets, but they DO A JOB... I did not found a vietnamese person here which one was unemployed... they are very hardworking and very usefull for the Czech republic and for the Czech economic. So - thank you vietnamies minority in Czech republic (at least for buying beer few years ago when I was underaged... lol)
I don't think Czech or any Europeans are racist, they are just being reasonable. Some minority/religious groups are not very considerable at all.
Who says czechs are racists?
@@telorceplok8812 actually heared it by some people on the internet...
@@tomasenzl3545 Ah.. Ignore those pseudo-liberals
Definitely going to have some pho when we visit Prague 😍

2:58 I remember a very hot summer day, somewhere in the Czech Republic, I saw an old woman with one of this oriental hats. For something like a second, I felt as I was in tropical Asia and not in Central Europe.

Shouldn’t it be “How Nigerian is Australia”
Sarah’s Diary VN-AU not very. There’s not many Nigerian here but there a tons of Sudanese, South Africans and people from east Africa
I never knew that the VN community in the Czech is so vibrant but it's good to see. Thanks for taking the time to introduce this sidebar into your Czech experience Drew.
Another interesting this is how those Vietnamese-Czechs boys and girls speak the 3rd language English so well. Just show once again how we Americans are lagging so far behind Europe and Asia on global awareness/skills.
I live in Czechia and my best friend is actually Vietnamese
I live in Prague and eat pho at least 4x a week. It’s my favorite Czech food 🍲
Pho is not a Czech food.
🤣🤣🤣 If Phó is a Czech food I am a Vietnamese guy then
Hey I'm Czech and I love Sapa I always go to restaurants and shops always amazing.
I really love this place in Prague. I actually tried my first time Vietnamese food there and it was pretty great! Thanks drew for showing the world how great Prague and Czech Republic is because not so many bloggers go there. And you remind me how much I miss my country 😍 thank you!
Im from Vietnam. Thank you for making this video. Always a fan!!
Hoàng Pd i love Vietnam im from USA
Xin chào :D
Who else wants to see Drew to collab with Honest Guide?
Who else wants billy to lay off with his cheesy comments?
Who else wants Billy to stop posting the same fucking comment that appears at least hundred times in a video about the Czech Republic?
Jo, to by šlo
Perfect crossover doesn't exi-
my favorite place in Vietnam is Sapa...why ? it is because it unique..you get to see tribes down the mountain side...you can get to stay with them if you like..the scenery is so beautiful. it bring you back like a 100 years.love it!
Citizens of Prague pronounce spoken Czech differently then the rest of the country. In the ears of non Praguese they "sing" the language slightly by intonation and extending vowels, especially the last one in the word or in the sentence. (You should hear my niece!) It's actually very melodious and pleasing. I haven't been to Prague in many years but upon my last visit I was amazed to meet a group of truly beautiful young girls of Vietnamese ancestry speaking in perfect "singing" Czech.... It would be like walking in LA and meeting group of say for example Somali girls speaking and behaving in perfect Valley Girls style. Amazing!
The Vietnamese are everywhere here and we love them. They are not "mainly in Prague", they are eveywhere. The rest of the country is also *habitable*.
Prague is so diverse, in the afternoon you can be at Lokal (a restaurant that’s really good) drinking Pilsner and then eating pho at a Vietnamese place at night, so cool!
Adam Marjanovic Yes... really cool. Eventually there will be no Czech culture, and eventually all European cultures will be uprooted in favour of a second home for a foreign culture.
Adam Marjanovic yes really cool isn’t it that the identity of the indigenous Czech will disappear and they become minorities and there culture will disappear multiculturalism is a failure
European Infidel I hope that doesn’t happen but it’s a worst case scenario
Adam Marjanovic carry on importing the third world and it will sadly happen I would hate Czech Republic to end up like my country England
can i just say that his videos lately look better and that drew looks happier when filming?
Vietnam And Czech is brother 🇨🇿❤️🇻🇳
It feels so free to watch him.
Keep doing bro.
No offense, but I laughed so hard when drew said ‘the Vietnamese make up a whopping 1%’
that a lot
Flaming Gaming that’s quite a bit. In a random European country that’s a lot
Flaming Gaming *How dare u laugh at my country*
That is a lot for a country like Czech.
It's not like Cambodia or Laos, it's a random European country where you would never guess there would be Vietnamese people in so 1% kinda is whopping.
Say "hello" from Vietnam. Thanks for your video about our people in Czech Republic :D
I'm going to visit Prague very soon so it's the perfect time to watch this video 😍
Showing us at the end the backstage of the video was great. Especially for people who make vlogs too and don't feel confident shooting themselves 😉
Best city in Europe super safe and it’s so awesome 🇨🇿
That is why I love your videos, very meaningful
That mini Hanoi reminds me of a place in Northern Virginia called Eden Center. It’s a shopping center where almost every business is Vietnamese owned. This is less true now since Vietnamese food has become popular but I used to go there when I was much younger to get pho and would be the only white person there
Omg a crossover with two of my fav CZcamsrs!!
im living in germany in the near of the czech border and driving once a month to rozvadov to buy cigarettes and even this small village is full of vietnamese
Not only in Rozvadov
Rozvadov i lived there when i was born
My father also came to Germany to works in 80s, and he decided to return Vietnam, while many of his friends stayed there
they are everywhere, even here in our small 3000 people city are 2 Vietnamese shops :-)
@ I didn't say it's bad thing, I don't care about them. If they are doing something illegal, it's not something what is danger for common people, they are only cultivating weed. :-)
Your way of explanation is amazing Drew❤👍
OMGGGGG THERE IS PPPETER HERE. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS DREW AND PETER. Keep up the good work! From Vietnam.😄

Vietnamese markets are a very common thing. In my city of 5000 people, there are at least 5 shops owned and run by the Vietnamese.

Hi drew much love from chicago! I love your vids and watch every day! Good luck
‘How Indonesian is Holland/The Netherlands is also a great topic, 2 percent of the population is fully Indonesian, it’s estimated that 10-20% is partly Indonesian.

Hahaha I'm just kidding. Amazing City!
You stole my comment dude, whopping 1% lol
@@enamulhoque2103 I didn't scroll through the comment section to check haha
1% is a lot at this scale
@@F100cTomas 1% on any scale is miniscule.
Well, for Czechia, that is a lot, since ALL the minorities COMBINED make up about 8 % of population here.
Honestly the Canadian guy you hired was the best choice ever, your vids quality since took a leap up
@@EducatedEarth oh no you again

Another of the many reasons I have for visiting Czech Republic
Similar in Poland, we also invited many of Vietnamese during Vietnam war, my mom told me that schools in Poland were even organising and sending some stuff to friendly vietnamese communists :D Check out Vietnamese in Warsaw, there's about 30 000 people :)

More and more Vietnamese now know a bit more about Vietnamese overseas
The beer in Hanoi was also brought over by the Czechs
haha, thats why it doesnt suck like murican beer
Interesting video
Vietnam is true Asia. Respect for Czech republic to embress all the people, culture in their society. Hats off.
Yeah its logical bro because Vietnamese people want to work and don't want to change our religion or habits at all. We simply adore them tbh
Love this one....
This is interesting. I don't think I saw "Vietnamese city" while I was in Prague. Thanx for sharing
I live in ostrava
I was in Prague last month and we did have Pho it was delicious
The king of Cambodia lived in the Czech Republic and speaks the language.
So true! And Ethiopian king too!
Much of the same can be said about Poland. Many Vietnamese people live in Poland and give themselves Polish names and speak better Polish than Vietnamese.
I am so happy you invited Peter 😄
Wow it is crazy how all cultures around the world 🌍 have some influence in other countries! I am from Australia 🇦🇺 and only recently I have learnt about specific areas that are practically not Australian at all! Such an interesting thing 👍
Yep, it definitely has made the world what it is today. I'm full Aussie with some Iranian ethnicity, multiculturalism makes many new things and skills in people.
CSR You say the world... but it’s predominantly Western countries traditionally inhabited by Europeans.
CSR You say the world... but it’s predominantly Western countries traditionally inhabited by Europeans.
@@Miquelalalaa You're not wrong actually. But in 2019 many Western countries are very multicultural.
CSR Well What I meant is that it’s usually foreign cultures becoming dominant in areas of Western/European countries.
You'r love drew
Many Cambodians fled to the Czech Republic as well.
Good vid
Drew you are my idol
One of my favorite food from around the world is pho 😍!!
Nice video
People, 1% is a huge minority in a very homogenous country like Czechia.
I didn't know that, now I know. Thanks! =)
That's awesome that there is a thriving Vietnamese community there.
It's a shame they don't feel they are Czech even though they were BORN there!
cause you don't feel ethnically Czech if ur parents are not ethnically czech
If u in America you are American even if your parents are from Tanzania
They’re also one of the few non-western minorities in Czechia so they’ll always stand out. The country is not as diverse as the US.
Aaron it’s only right for them think like that as they’re not ethnically Czech
@@kykale they didn't say they didn't feel Czech. I am a naturilised Czech citizen too (father German Czech, mother originally from St. Petersburg), I dont feel Czech at all. I feel European actually. Or British in terms of culture and language. But I am still very lucky to have a Czech passport. Also depends on the person. Finally, it isn't fair to compare Czechia to the US. Even in the UK, not all people who were even born there feel fully British.
They are not only in Prague, they are everywhere. You can find a Vietnamese-owned minimart in almost every Czech village and often they are the only option to buy your groceries without having to drive to the city.
Somewhere they also became like a social center. If the local pub goes bankrupt, you might find the locals just hanging in front of a Vietnamese minimart, drinking bottle beer and chatting with the owners...
Drew is this pppeter at 0:26? I found his channel some days ago :)

You have some kind of a misconception in your head about Prague ... SAPA is not 20 minutes south of Prague ... it is still in Prague ( Is it because of how suburbs work in american cities ? )
