Good info. I raise a few sheep in the Kerrville/Harper area. Predator hunting is mandatory in order to keep anything alive. I hunt alone and have only one arm so I deal with lots of challenges. I found Nitecore to have lights that work for me. Both headlight and weapon light are rechargeable and are giving me good service.
I need a little more gear than most folks and have adapted a game carrier to get to my setups with everything I need. Can't drive in because everything in the county knows when a truck shows up.
Night hunting with white light is my most productive means of maintaining control over predation.

The Backstop looks genuinely cool and I'm glad to hear you're thinking of testing it out. Definitely some silyness going on though, particularly with the graphs shown. Jim is a consummate marketer: he started Backfire as a case study within his internet marketing job. I think he genuinely does enjoy shooting and hunting though. The channel and video title are:

New drinking game, I like to call it “reality of the situation”
you think you know where it goes from here..
On another note, I’ve been following you guys for a while now, I picked up night hunting last year when Kansas opened up a 3month night season at the start of the year. Running strictly thermal. I’ve found myself spending more time in the Tulsa area this past year due to work, so I’ve been able to go out and secure quite a bit of ground away from my home state and try some new things.
I’ve had some great success, learned some tough lessons, but in all I’ve applied a lot of what you talk about into my nightly stands. That being, treat your nighttime hunts similar to your daytime stands.
Being conscious of the wind, where you’re attempting to draw dogs out of, moon phases and how to overall just set myself up for a better chance of a sub 80yard dispatch.
My summertime hunts in Oklahoma this year always seemed to be more successful just before, during, and directly after crazy weather.
A handful of doubles, a couple triples, and my first ever solo quad on a single stand.
And I’m talking wind blowing sideways, tornado warnings, hail, just absolute shit times to be out and a few land owners became concerned with my safety.
Why is it you may think, that I’ve stumbled across this repeatable outcome? I’ve always related coyote hunting to blue cat fishing. In the sense that I’d rather have heavy winds, than no winds.
But have you had similar findings with your hunting experience?
Do you intentionally hunt around these rapidly shifting weather patterns?

Used to use night vision scope with a thermal monocular for scanning. Had them spook as soon as my ir hit him. He was an educated coyote. Went thermal this summer and so far love it.

Never used killzone but coyotelight has done well for me, really like the variable power and adjustable shade that keeps light off my barrel, (powerful too)..

Solid information as always, much appreciated. I know there’s a lot of variables and it’s situationally dependent but looking for a better way to run my call sequence so here’s a few questions for y’all:
Do you run a sound continuously for a few minutes or start/stop/repeat?
Do you pause between sounds and if so for how long?
Do you kill the sound when the coyote/bobcat is coming in or leave the sound on?

I take electrical tape and tape hand warmers around my scope to be able to make sure that it last longer. When they say it's an internal battery and it's eighteen hours of use and you get three. Especially during competition

Love your Podcast guys. Most informative one I've found, as well as entertaining. I'm building a night hunting varmint AR in 223 Wylde. For your 53g Vmax loads, would you recommend a 1:9 twist or 1:8 twist? It's likely going to be a heavy barrel stainless 20". I'd like to keep it 1:8 twist so I can still shoot the heavier stuff, but am not sure how well it will stabilize the light bullets. I am a hand loader, but never really messed with the light stuff and haven't messed with the AR stuff as far as hand loads go.

what EFR are you running and did you have to raise your optic a lot to make it level? if not are were you able to get a low pro mount for the clip on? ive got a badger efr and with a medium ring and nightforce nx8 2.5x20x50 and AMG rattler with provided mount there is no way they level with each other without having a crazy high scope mount.

My cheap night vision scope is much clearer than my thermal that costs 3x the money. I scan with thermal and shoot with my ir scope. The ballistic range finder they definitely see the flash.

  • @nowherespecial6780
    @nowherespecial6780 Před 8 měsíci

I think the complete opposite. I run my thermal scope on top of my night vision scope. We have a lot of different Critters here in Maine. That we cannot shoot. So for the identification. I like to spot all my thermal and then go down to my name vision. In which I am running the wicked lights.
Ir. As well it turns to red. But for $350.. it beats, the shit out of ATN . If you want a bad ass light. That last a long time in extreme cold. Go to wicked lights. They are second to none
