During WW1, The French Infantry were referred to as Poilu. Literally meaning "Hairy one". They are depicted in this short as "Rabbits" or "Hares" as a play on words. The reason for the French Commander's intolerance towards the melody being played is because it is "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven. A German tune by a German composer.
Oh, thanks for reminding it, I completely missed that.

In German, we have the word "Angsthase" (engl. scaredy-cat), which literally means scared rabbit. To me, this short illustrates that men are often very scared of each other (sometimes rightfully so). In the minds of opponents they each appear as a towering threat striking fear into the hearts turning them into scared rabbits. Each side is so afread of each other, so in the end, they are all just scared rabbits. And that fear makes them susceptible to manipulation by war mongerers.
The real monster is not war. The monsters are the people who decide to wage it.
Pretty much, and they never want to fight it themselves either, poor and gullible people killing each-other so the rich and powerful can stay rich and powerful.
Sadly, not only applicable to war.
alot of soldiers figth to keep the guy beside them alive tho
The real monster in the closet is that humanity needs war to thrive. We always have. We feed on it. That is the tragedy of war.

Everyone seems to miss the moral and is just focused on the fact that everyone’s a bunny. The film is meant to give us a first person glimpse on war. When the bunny comes across a monstrous shadow, that’s the bunny’s perspective of the enemy. But once the bunny shoots the enemy, it’s soon found out that the ‘monster’ is just another bunny, just like our hero in this film. The monster was just the way the enemy was portrayed to the bunny. This is meant to tell us that although there are enemies in war, they are ultimately just people like us in the end.
well ofcourse everyone is focused on the bunny ears, what else did you expect?????
Damn that's deep
even them. The greatest atrocities are not caused by the greed of a few, but by the the desires of the many to protect those they love, strangled by fear and corrupted by hatred

A thought-provoking gem. An excellent story told with remarkable talent. thank you for sharing this.

what Judy Hopps REALLY ment when she said they had a dark history:
Damn
What scene was this?
@@deltasquad8817 a deleted scene where they discovered that her great grandpa served under the French army in ww1
Mateo Escalante meant
Zootopia city was ww1
Here's my interpretation of the story.
It begins with our protagonist, a young soldier playing with his harmonica in the trenches. Rabbits in many cultures are associated with innocence and naivety, aligning how the protagonist, along with his many fellow soldiers, are young and ignorant to the big picture, which is backed by how young men between the ages 18~26 were drafted for WW1 & WW2.
We then see the older Commander ordering his troops to attack, his shredded ear hinting this wasn't his first battle, and likely not his last. The mentioned commander spots our protagonist and crushes his harmonica, possibly symbolizing the hopes and dreams of the young people that were destroyed from an older generation's desire for war, as our protagonist likely dreamed to be a musician but was drafted into the war against his will.
In the next intense scene, we see our protagonist running away from the horrifying enemy, running and shaking as they honed their crosshairs and shot at it as soon as they could. This could symbolize how distorted and brainwashed our perception of other side becomes when we become exposed to propaganda, wether from the media or the government itself, viewing the opposition as unrecognizable monsters who need to be slain, and anyone who does is considered a hero.
The final, most important scene in my opinion, our protagonist pulls the trigger and kills the "monster", returning him from delusion and sees the "monster" was a merely a rabbit like him, a rabbit no older than him, a rabbit who seemed to have shared a passion with him, as they clutched their own harmonica in their dead hands. Our protagonist picks up the fallen rabbit's harmonica and begins playing ,"Ode to Joy", as all the other young soldiers hears the melody and lowers their guns down, before our protagonist's commander, angered, orders his soldiers to fire at their comrade, continuing the battle. This entire scene represents the tragedy that war truly is, how it shreds thousands of possible friendships, as shown when the rabbit our protagonist killed, also had their own harmonica, a common passion both rabbits could've bonded over if they were under normal circumstances. And "Ode to Joy", the melody our protagonist played with his fallen "enemy's" harmonica, a song composed by Beethoven that spoke how peace and compassion overcomes war, tell us how our protagonist feels towards this entire war, how he realized they're all the same, they all have dreams to fulfill, lives to live, families to return to, and that all this war doing is robbing everyone of those precious blessings in exchange for blind hatred and bloodshed. The rest of the soliders lowering their weapons hinting the rest had realized it too, but soon continue under the orders of their older commanders, representing how older generations don't wish to change, not desiring to change their flawed views, even at expense of the younger generations' lives.
This was amazing
@@smokeythedog5137 yup the entire crew responsible for this animation deserve a medal.

I agree with your point of view and we can add on the symbolism of rabbits there is an expression in France it is "se faire tirer comme un lapin"/ "to be shot like a rabbit" is the situation that the soldiers lived and then it is also for the pun with POILUS (name of French soldiers from 14-18 because they did not shave) which means hairy. The life time of a soldier out of a trench in Verdun was less than 5 seconds.
And as regards the Ode to Joy, it is also the official European anthem.
@@hikarianoranda6503 Damn I never knew that as I'm not French.
It's saddening to hear there were soldiers were little as 14 years of age hurled upon the battlefield.

HybridChronic420 Ok I will. But overall the game in general isn't like this because you can't play as the 🇫🇷 French
You will in they shall not pass
My interpretation:
The main character is afraid of german soldiers for obvious reasons (eg. war propaganda ) and when he's attacked by one of them he sees the enemy as a horryfing monster. However after killing the german soldier he realizes that it wasn't a monster. It was another rabbit, just like him. Moreover he also played harmonica. Under other circumstances they could have been friends. He decides to play a melody to honor the fallen enemy. The melody does something unexpected: it unites both sides for a short moment ( you can see that german soldier at 3:23 was probably aiming at the protagonist but didnt shoot ). The melody from 3:27 is beginning of ode to joy, anthem of the European Union which unites Europe nowadays. However on war there is no place for such beautiful ideas as unity, so main character is killed by french officer for desertion and the war proceeds as it did before. War doesn't accept ideals
War , war never changes . Only the faces & thosed that were lost 💔 because of War , may their faces never disappear.

From Robert Graves' account to Celine's to this short film. I'm convinced that the Human Race took a wrong turn in 1914 and has maintained course ever since. In 1914, we witnessed the first global, mechanized, mindless slaughter of our own kind. And we said, "I'm ok with this." Our species deserves everything we get.
That said, if the rabbits who eat the vegetables in my garden wore snappy uniforms and had bolt action rifles, I think the terms of our living arrangement would be quite different.
Same. All the societal progress of the 19th century was lost in half a decade, leaving only decades of democracy rotting on the vine as people lost faith in it and drifted to extreme ideologies. McCarthyism, Stalinism, fascism, all were borne out of the trauma of the world wars. It was only with the fall of the USSR the West seemed to regain confidence, only for that to be immediately shattered as the legacy of imperialism in the Middle East (itself a product of the world wars) exploded into islamic radicalism. Though I’d place the root causes further back than 1914, probably back in the wake of 1848 when Germany began embracing radical militarism. While all sides were to blame for the war, it was Prussian militarism that saw it escalate out of the Balkans.
Better than alot of WW1 films Ive seen Bravo

Robin the reason why they are so good is because they are usually 4 minutes long. less time and better animation

Also, it's a completely different style.
This is nowhere close. Perhaps your perspective is tainted by lack of knowledge toward the film and you're trying to find a deeper understanding, even though it's not portrayed.
Robin Of course, It has weapons.
generals would actualy do that in the first world war. and the second, they'd shoot you if you didn't charge or ran towards friendly trenches. or if you were to do what the rabbit did.
only in Russia.
LOL hell no, it happened. For French, the one who refuse to go, they were accuse of treason and face court martial judgement, at this time, it's only mean that you will be executed in the dishonored to be a traitor.
Russia at this time wasn't communist and they use Napoleonien cavalery charges strategy that were very costly and uneffective, it one of the reason that the october revolution happened... don't mix WW1 with WW2 it wasn't same!
Not in the way the guy described though it wasn't like enemy at the gates. There were cases of. Execution for cowardice but it wasn't a commisar. Style execution with a pistol. The only place that level of disregard for the lives of you own men occurred in communist countrys up to the 80s
That was the point I was trying to make in my little quip
Not for Australians fortunately
I like how this video illustrated what a lot of ww1 original content misses. The French had notorious leadership. Many french soldiers were executed during the war, as you’d expect it was from anti-war sentiment throughout the ranks. Leading to several mutinies especially in the early years of the war.

Insanity, death, and violence on a grand scale. This short film does a small, but good job at depicting how terrifying and physiologically destructive the Great War was. The only inaccuracy I saw was the soldiers using Mosin-Nagants. Lastly it also shows the complete disregard for human life by superiors during the war. So many men died for fellow country men, who's life meant so little to them. What wonderful lives they could've lived.
"Lastly it also shows the complete disregard for human life by superiors during the war."
No, i think it is simple stupidity, because even the coldest, hardest commander still wants to be successful in battle, yet they repeatedly attempt the same tactic that previously failed to work.
As Albert Einstein said "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
You got morons in charge, its that simple, on both sides.
It makes me feel sorry for Black Adder goes forth, because how can you mock the stupidity in ww1 when the best you can hope for is mimicry??
czcams.com/video/Pxbzb8XXiGQ/video.html
In war, there is no "good" vs "evil"; there are only men fighting for an opposing cause. The Soldiers don't care about politics during a battle, all they care about is protecting their comrades in arms so they can live to see civilian life once more. The man/woman you just killed on the battlefield could have been an old friend from your childhood or a total stranger, in that moment, it doesn't matter. You have to do what you have to in order to ensure the safety of your unit.
The moment that you lose that mentality, is the moment that you would break down and realize the nightmare that is war.
Pretty sure Nazi idealism is pure evil

My favorite detail is the officer’s chipped ear!: It shows that he didn’t get this post through nepotism, but by being a combat veteran himself! He’s probably only alive right now because of the way he mercilessly attacks his enemies, never letting up and associating any form of weakness with failure and defeat! He hates that one of his men won’t fight, hates that fact with a burning passion. That’s why he clenches his gloved hand before having him shot.

This is very realistic towards the horrors of the great war. Amazing job with the animation.
In every town or village of France, there is a monument with the names of all the rabbits who died for our freedom, much honor to our glorious poilus !
In December 1914 the Germans and 'Allies' on the Western front celebrated Christmas together. The soldiers left their trenches and shared food with one another, whilst they played music and enjoyed the best they could. There was even a football match, which was won by Germany (3 - 2).
However, the commanding officers of both sides disagreed with this and they feared the men wouldn't fight anymore. Thus these actions were forbidden and the penalty for it was death. The sentries had the order to shoot anyone (no matter the side) who tried to fraternize.
This short... well, it kinda represents that. Yes, it was at Douaumont and yet the story tells the same. There's no room for love and friendship when fighting a war. Only death...

This one hit home kinda much with me.
Since i play the harmonica.
It hit home for me too, since I am a bunny rabbit.
With me it hit home, since I was killed in WWI.
And for me, since I'm an harmonica.
The Flying Spaghetti Monster
Congratulations on that, but I still think you are a little out of context.
Perhaps you should create a new universe with another meaning of context.
it hit home for me because I'm Jake from statefarm
"The war never changes, the
war changes you"
That’s so true
“And when they kill them they kill you next”

This felt like an episode of love, death and robots
I think a lot of people overlooked the symbolism in the setting.
The setting is obviously WW1. The first modern war. But it was chosen because it represents a more isolated and horror aspect than any other potrayal due to trench warfare and once beautiful landscapes now being muddy wastelands riddled with debris and craters. It’s a more depressing sight not by just looking at it, but knowing your history you will know how downright awful it was being on the western front in that period.
The soldiers themselves rabbits because rabbits are cute, innocent creatures when you look at them. But in these uniforms, numb expressions, wielding rifles, and charging into battle we know they have been greatly effected by this war. They represent the young and naive who were brought to this and had been shaken with the violence albeit the protagonist who still has some level of humanity with the harmonica. Briefly amazing both the French and Germans before his own commanding officer kills him as an effort to keep his own men in the fight.
Speaking of this, the sides that were chosen are the French and German Armies. Two sides that probably hated each other the most in that war. The French officer doesn’t want any form of innocence among his men and wants them to kill for their country among anything else. This is what pressures the protagonist to see the enemy as a monster and shooting him before his realizes it’s another innocent soldier like him, just wearing a different uniform.
The message of this film is that nothing good comes out of war outside of politics. It kills innocent people and consumes those who survive
War... War never changes
VIBE Originalz nice Fallout 4 reference
nope. thats an acient quote. either from the greeks or romans.
S.P.E.C.I.A.L Reference
...except for which creature fights it.
JustLearnin 15 It's not a Fallout 4 reference, it's a Fallout series reference, the fourth one wasn't the first to use the phrase. Also;
"War has changed"
Do you know where this reference is from?
Battlefield 1 should have felt like this....oppressive....dark...quiet....tragic....pointless. That's what WWI was.
PhantomAlucard yeah, but it wouldn't be a fun game to play..which is not you what you would want as a FPS action Game..
PhantomAlucard I found it exactly how war would be. Loud, chaotic, intense, with dark and tragic moments.
Universal Doge u shut the fuck up you bitch ass nigga
easily the worst war in human history. not the most bloody, but for the cause and the cost one of the worst things tho happen to humanity, 100 years of relative peace and economic prosperity gone with millions of dead and a continent in shambles and the peace-meal dissolution of the colonial powers that is still causing problems today and the rise of authoritarian regimes of fascism and communism which lead to an unimaginable body count in particular the communists who killed nearly 100 million people. but through the darkness we did see brief glimpses of hope within the human spirit such as christmas of 1914.
jacob jones the Mongols once invaded and executed almost an entire country's population because that country's king thought it'd be a good idea to test the Mongols and decided to execute Mongolian ambassadors
The quality is amazing
Ну да.
Ода к радости Шиллера - лучше всего подходит к такой развязке.

I like how He is playing "Ode to joy", which, in the second Verse, states:
"Your magics bind again
what custom has strictly parted
all men become brothers
where your tender wing lingers."
It fits so Well...
Mika Kreutzer Diene binden wieder wieder was die Mode streng geteilt, Alle Menschen werden Brüder. wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt
I also think it was chosen because now it's a symbol of European unity.
@Coliber Exactly right! Something that some Europeans tend to forget lately...
Lest we forget...
I had forgotten this...Thank you
“We came from all over the world. So many of us thinking this war would be our right of passage-our great adventure. Let me tell you: It was no adventure.
New killing machines, like the tank, changed the shape of the war overnight. Luckily they were mostly on our side. Mostly.
Instead of adventure, we found fear and in war, the only true equalizer was death.
They push… We push… Every once in awhile, we pushed hard enough that the light breaks through the clouds - so a world beyond the war glimmers. Just out of reach....
The war is the world. And the world is the war.
But behind every gunsight is a human being.
We are those people.
We are the jaded. And we are the naive.
We are the honorable. And the criminal.
We are the bound for Legend. And the lost to history.
We are the knights of the sky. The ghosts in the desert. And the rats in the mud.
These are our stories.”
I definently wanna play rabbit field 1😂❤
Bf1 mods leaked!
Rabbit mode
If only Battlefield 1 was more like this. Only, without the rabbits, though.
gordean donw -there is a game called Verdun
Ye boiiii
Battlefield 1 people hype
Verdun?The fuck is that?
An die Freude, may there hopefully never be war in Europe again. (Look up the European Hymn if you don't know what tune he is playing)
Fuck the european hymn
+Colonel Burton Shut up and go spit your venom elsewhere.
Colonel Burton I'll tolerate your opinion, but just know, that the situation in europe is far from any kind of war. Plus the instrumental for that poem was used even before the EU existed, for example as the inofficial hymn of the BRD or the anthem the two german olympic teams walked into the stadium with. That poem and score symbolise the european spirit and the hope, that there never again will be war in Europe, for only ill may come of that.
Well that's actually Ode to Joy written by Beethoven, the EU simply stole the tune from it. Creating their own was probably too much effort for Europe lol.
Skorzy Nearly every European anthem wasn't composed with the intention of it becoming one and the original poem, Ode to Joy by Friedrich Schiller, was aimed at a unified, brotherly, Europe, so I think it's the best song/poem they could have picked.
I saw a WW2 video once about South Pacific beachhead landings. One soldier was reflecting his life up to that point. “We’re cannon fodder.”
WAR it's very bad 🇺🇦🙏
So much said with no words. Love these videos.
This has some realisticness to it, too.
Back in the days of Propoganda, people were told the enemy were monsters.
Then when they got their first kill, they saw the Enemy was a man, just like them.
"Back in the days of Propaganda" : HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!
Thats ANIMATED? The surroundings and objects look like straight out of a movie, damn
Jillmeru I believe many assets from battlefield 1 were reused in some shots, like the destroyed ft-17 tank
The Loyal Theorist
r steevens Alright. Let me rephrase my sentence then.
The surroundingsa and objects look REAL.
"Poilus" was the term used for the 8 million French infantrymen of WW1.
This short film lives in my head rent free
