American Magic launches America's Cup boat Patriot

- Is this the slipperiest Cup boat in the fleet? There's plenty to suggest that American Magic's AC75 'Patriot' is the most refined aerodynamic package so far and if that's the case the team's new machine could be the lowest drag Cup boat out there.
But why have the Americans decided to go down this route and be so obsessive about drag and at what cost?

I'm not sure how she will compare competitively, but she has really nice lines and curves. It is so interesting that they now have to really concentrate on aerodynamics, but given the speeds of over 50mph are not unheard of then yeah, aerodynamics does matter. I wonder if they are allowed to fit those arms that pivot up/down and hold the hydrofoil with aerodynamic features. They might not generate a lot of force (lift), but being able to use the foil arm on the windward side, the side out of the water, but to have that side generate lift downwards to help counter the tipping force tending to make the boat roll away from the wind.
Active aero has been looked at by at least one team in the offshore Ultim trimaran class. It makes more sense on a trimaran since the arms are fixed, but what you're saying could be of some advantage down the road especially if speeds increase in the AC. We can expect every team will be researching all conceivable avenues that may avail them of gains.
Their last Patriot was a rocket ship with maybe a little weakness and light air. This one looks very good low profile design very different from other teams. I hope we have some close sailing has most of the foiling races in the last two or three cycles are just runaway victories for the quicker team.
Interesting , very interesting on the recumbent cyclists plan. Seems like a red herring , can’t believe they would deliver more watts than standing in the saddle as it were.
Slightly less watts but less drag and positioning as in the over all design of their boat. Trade offs. A very impressive boat.
Also, those watts don’t necessarily equal boat speed just more effort to power the hydraulics. It might come into play in a tacking dual if that is a thing in these votes, but I really don’t think the differences in our matter and it’s clear they’re going for the low profile and frontal area.
AC teams don't invest millions and years of R&D on red herrings. Look at the current generation of Ultim trimarans with the streamlining efforts that have gone into that class, and it's supposedly not as fast as the AC75.

Seems like everyone is reporting on less power, but no one is reporting that the overall aerobic efficiency is the same, and over the course of 20 minutes, that is what matters.

I don't get why they would produce less power if they just rotate them, as long as they're in the same position with their same femor to (lower) spine angles that they're used to. The only difference should be the curvature in their upper spine being less for more comfort.
I'm just guessing here, but in a standard pedaling position, body weight and gravity can help. You don't get that in a recumbent position.
@@das564 Yes, several factors make recumbent cyclists generate less power. Besides the rider's weight and gravity, the respiratory system is less efficient and so is tissue perfusion. That said, it is far more comfortable and the average heart rate is roughly 20 BPM lower, if I recall correctly, contributing to increased endurance that may also help in a long race. This is all without considering the aerodynamic benefits of superior hull streamlining, which is the primary design objective that AM had in mind with the recumbent cyclors.
