That line, ‘Don’t concentrate on the finger or you will miss all the heavenly glory’, could probably be interpreted in many ways, for me it kinda means don’t try too hard to get something perfect or you will miss the real answer, it’s like walking down the stairs, you don’t concentrate so hard on where each foot is going to go, you’re not trying to get each foot placement perfect. There is no right way to walk down stairs, you can do it easily without overthinking it trying to get it right. You will do far better by not thinking about it than you would trying to be perfect. So stop thinking and instead... FEEEEEEEEL

Agreed, I think you can apply to anything in life also. I am applying it for work right now. In that I shouldn’t concentrate on just the grind and the “hard” parts of my daily routines, but rather I should enjoy the ride and the notion that I am working for something in the long term (financial freedom)

There is a famous saying by a Zen teacher his name was Thich Nhat Hanh :
“A finger pointing at the moon is not the moon.” The finger is needed to know where to look for the moon, but if you mistake the finger for the moon itself, you will never know. the real moon.

As a martial artist who crawled all the way from couch potato to almost second Dan black belt in 8+ years People often forget the opposite is true. Even me.
Yes never ever underestimate your opponent. Unless you want to marry your local dentist, surgeon, therapist and emotional support bunny 🐰 NEVER do that.
      However.
That you should never overestimate your opponent.
There are good martial artists, great martial artists and bad martial artists, terrible martial artists and masters.
However, people forget that there's always someone stronger, always someone who rivals or even super eyes you. Even the masters can't be complacent, or they're not masters.
They are not obsessed by this. But they're always ready and at peace .
Everything, every human, every plant, tree, bird, snake, bear, dragon, ghost. Has a weakness, multiple multiple weaknesses even.
That's why we have diff animal fighting stykes, that's why martial arts constantly adapt.
In terms of a fight ten your opponent has advantages and you have disadvantages and flaws that terrify and demoralize you. Possibly for days, weeks on end.
But the opposite is true. Your opponent not only has those sane weaknesses that can haunt and terrify them in their dreams...but you have those amazing advantages, even if you don't know it.
Even the mightiest warrior needs to cuddle and rest up, even the grand champion needs time to heal, rest up and analyze /accept their weakpoints. Then they can come back stronger, a new man, and more unstoppable than ever before.

This is a Zen buddhist parable. It was originally about a monk who was asked to interpret text, to which he asked the student to read it to him. Confused the student asked how could he understand it if he can't read it. He equated the truth to a moon and the text to a finger pointing to that truth. Don't be stuck on dogma or else you'll miss the truth that it is pointing to.

Difficult to decipher the message here, all that resonates with me through all the years of rewatching all these is that Master Lee wanted to impart the knowledge specifically to those hardpressed and dedicated to their craft whatever it is. That, in the craft what matters is how you feel when in it, and that is what keeps you going and keeps you aiming high to achieve greatness and fulfillment on it. The finger- (process or techniques) are no more than boring routines that one should not focus on but the feeling and excitement and realizations out of the experience of it all of which no one will ever take away and that is what keeps the artist going for it. It is the experience and takeaway on an individual basis that makes it all worthwhile. Thanks and God bless.

I still don't understand this part of the video. To me, bowing fully means forgoing your pride as a form of respect for the opponent. No matter how junior or senior the opponent is, you respect him/her as a human. Can someone kindly explain please?

    • @kylenguyen7371
      @kylenguyen7371 Před rokem +1

@@ahkowtan5409 while bowing is seen as an act of respect, the idea here is that taking your eyes off the subject devalues the meaning of the act (at least in the instance of an opponent). Taking your eyes off of them grants them an opportunity to strike you unseen; to create for yourself such a vulnerability signals that you do not, in fact, respect them or their capabilities in combat. It renders your bowing as an empty gesture at best, or a message that you do not fear or respect what the subject can/may do to you.

The interpretation behind this quote I feel is the finger represents the instructor or it can also represent the rules or restrictions of the art, the moon represents the art or the full expression of an individual. Emulating, copying, focusing on the instructor or limiting yourself to a rule set Is concentrating on the finger. Focusing on the moon is focusing on the art itself and your own development as a martial artist. Absorbing what is useful, rejecting what is useless and adding essential what is you own.

Everyone in these comments are arguing about the meaning... I have watched this movie and followed Bruce's teachings and philosophy for over 30 years now, since I was 5 and saw Enter The Dragon on television for the first time.
    It's simple...
If you have a goal, a path, or a dream you'd like to live, always focus on the destination itself, and not the hurdles or things that stand in the way. As long as you know you will succeed, no matter what life throws at you, you will!
Most of you need to read Bruce's philosophy and literature, not just watch the movies, philosophy was his major when he studied at University in San Francisco, he didn't just know all of these things, he learned to understand life through finding his own philosophy, which made him excellent at digging into others own soul for themselves their own way, instead of relying on dogma or a helping hand when things get tough.
