  • Adam Stones attended Sherborne School in the 90s. A life-changing bike ride across the USA prompted his entry into journalism, and, later, into social change communications. He now lives and works in Amsterdam, and will be advocating for cycling as an agent of social change. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Excellent presentation. I made the change to bike this year and everything he said is accurate. Amazing transformation!

A noble set of goals. I hope he is successful. I've been riding for 65 years. I still enjoy it immensely. And I have seen the analogy of birds in flight. Bicycling is as close as we can get to the illusion of flight. It takes a little practice and you have to keep your head up. But, even if you don't, it is still worthwhile.

So we’ll said! I’ve only been riding for transportation and fun this past year…. I feel the best I’ve felt in years!

I really hope we in England embrace cycling more. I live on my bike and wouldn't be without it.

I was working in Singapore 6 years ago. They are saying that they cannot improve bicycle infrastructure, because the country is too small.
    Bullocks!
When they were building a small area near my workplace for residential and business use, there were 3 roads crossing the area; all with 3 lanes and 3 exit points requiring more traffic lights.
One exit and bicycle paths were oh so easy. They don't think the right way.

I didn't know what to expect before I watched this video. I was a bit skeptical as to how good of a video it could be. It surprised me in a very good way! The facts/points you bring up are very new to me and I'll bet new to the majority of people. You're doing a great thing for people, businesses, the Earth....
I'm going to contribute to your plan as much as I can. It's a win win for everyone! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this, you should be very proud of yourself! You're the kind of person the world needs more of! Again, great job and many thanks for what you are doing!!
PS where can I get a bike bell/time machine? That is truly amazing! 🤣

I have learned how to drive a car but not ride a bike, I really like to learn but I am scared as the bike lanes are either too narrow or none existence at all, I do hope in the near future there will be a dedicated bike lane somewhere here in Hampshire, not just for leisure or sport, but to go to work or to the shop, this will also boost local sales.

lol at 7:59 where a slightly tubby bloke is clearly not feeling it: arms crossed and trying not to fall asleep.
Great talk though, and absolutely spot on (although he really should say 'cycle' rather than 'bicycle' as that includes the people that use trikes and quads and trailers). Let's hope that this year's 'Gear Change' doc from the govt along with Active Travel England is enough to really get the necessary change happening. Things are significantly more hopeful than they were when Adam gave this talk.

If even a fraction of the billions, likely trillions of dollars that have been put into "GREEN" energy initiatives around the world were put into building cycling as transportation networks in our cities the value of the ROI would be many times the cost of implementation... from the cost savings related to increased demand for denser core housing, decreased roadway expansion and maintenance costs to the massive cost savings from reduced obesity rates and a healthier population both physically and mentally.
..."Cycling adds years to life and life to years" I like that.
