  • This video is in remembrance of the Fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453. It is remembered with great sorrow. The other purpose of this video is to showcase the touching hymn of Guillaume Du-fay, the Lamentatio sanctae matris ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae, which is the Lament of the Holy Mother Church of Constantinople. It is modified from a part of the Book of Lamentations on the fall of Jerusalem. I included several images with the music. The song's lyrics and translation are below:
O tres piteulx de tout espoir fontaine,
Pere du filz dont suis mere esplorée,
Plaindre me viens a ta court souveraine,
De ta puissance et de nature humaine,
Qui ont souffert telle durté villaine
Faire à mon filz, qui tant m'a hounourée.
Dont suis de bien et de joye separée,
Sans qui vivant veule entendre mes plaints.
A toy, seul Dieu, du forfait me complains,
Du gref tourment et douloureulx oultrage,
Que voy souffrir au plus bel des humains.
Sans nul confort de tout humain lignage.
O most merciful fount of all hope,
Father of the son whose weeping mother I am:
I come to complain before your sovereign court,
about your power and about human nature,
which have allowed such grievous harm
to be done to my son, who has honored me so much.
For that I am bereft of all good and joy,
without anyone alive to hear my laments.
To you, the only God, I submit my complaints,
about the grievous torment and sorrowful outrage,
which I see the most beautiful of men suffer
without any comfort for the whole human race.

The fourth crusade, by sacking Constantinople, weakened the Byzantine Empire so gravely that eventually the Turks invaded Europe and conquered Constantinople herself. That was a most grievous self inflicted wound upon Christendom.

Did you know the Byzantines collaborated with the Turks and attacked King Barbarossa's army as they were crossing far east Europe into Asia Minor?
Simultaneously,an ousted Byzantine Prince paid the Crusaders to sack Constantinople in order to retrieve his crown.
Lastly, the Crusaders,on top of paying them back for the joint attack by Byz + Ottoman forces, and being paid to fight for a Byzantine Prince, retrieved priceless religious artifacts & relics.
It was obvious Constantinople would fall into Turkish hands sooner rather than later.
Add the Slaughter of the Latins massacre as reason for revenge,on top of it all,and you have the 4th Crusade.
After this,Europe and the World would never be the same.
It's almost as if our Blessed Lord commanded us to be One Church w different Rites?

True, and also true that internal squabbles and betrayals hurt Byzantium quite a lot. Yet, without the sacking by the 4th crusade and the refusal of Latin Christendom to assist, Constantinople might still be a Christian city.

Orthodox Russia likely would have retaken it after the 1850s Crimean War - but Britain and France joined Turkey to stop them! Turkey thanked Britain and France by declaring war on THEM in the WWI. Nice going.

This motet, following a medieval tradition, puts two separate lyrics together. You wrote the lyrics in French but the tenor sings the other one in Latin, taken from the prophet Jeremys Lamentations.

Actually much of the Balkans were already in Turkish hands by then. The Byzantines had invited them to cross over into Europe themselves some time before.

If Rome wasn't the One True Church,it would have fallen centuries and millennia ago like Jerusalem and Constantinople.
The Church's enemies have had to infiltrare and destroy her properties and ecclesiastical offices more than once because God won't allow a long term non-Catholic sacking and occupation of Rome.
The Novus Ordo heresy which started in utero circa mid 1950's,is similar to the Arian & Iconoclasm heresies and the Great Western Schism.
This happens once ever so often but outside of a few short term occupations after the years of Pope St.Gregory I, Rome was the leading center of Christianity and converted millions of souls after the protestant revolt.
Orthodoxy was on lock down for several centuries starting w the Ottomans and then the Communists.
