- đȘ Using and refilling diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is increasingly becoming a common aspect of owning a diesel-powered car or truck. This chemical is designed to reduce vehicle emissions by combining with exhaust gases after they have left the engine, which means that, over time, your DEF tank will start to run low. Wade shows you how to fill your DEF tank on your later model diesel trucks with no spills. Fill Blue! Watch as we show you how to properly fill your diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank and what is def fluid?

So true
I've thought the same thing for years. Lol
Odd that pickup trucks don't have a DEF pump like semi trucks
I have driven over the road diesel tractor trailer units for somewhere north of three million miles, retired 14 years ago. So see my point, when i bought my Chev Duramax recently, I knew nothing about DEF as it came about shortly after I retired. So maybe this is a simple video, but knowledge is always welcome to build confidence in doing things right! Thanks, Jim C.
Good perspective. Lots of â criticsâ out there....
I agree...simple but still useful...I'm so glad there's so many critics out there that have to comment on everything...
I saw 2 empty Blue Def jugs on a construction site this week. Diesel Exhaust Fluid? WTF? I've never heard of it even though I also drove truck for years. A lot has changed since I retired...
Agree, Thanks for the video. Bought my first diesal truck had no idea what def fluid was.
Go to a truck stop and they have DEF at the pump. Usually costs around $2.90/gal. Just make sure you don't take all day. Us over the road trucks don't like waiting at the fuel island.
đđđ
My brother was a interstate truck triver for 20 years. Drove 2 millions miles (equivalent to 4 trips to the moon and back). By the grace of Christ zero accidents.
He passed away 2 years ago of a heart attack.
Now we've got his truck that needs our care before it gets its new owner. Never dealt with BlueDef before so your video was helpful.
Thanks.

Thanks for telling me that the way I have been refilling DEF along, is way I should have been refilling DEF all along. And the whole time I thought it was just common sense. I feel way better now..
You'd be surprised how many folks lack that common sense now. I work with a construction company and just about all of our 30 trucks take DEF and that's a driver responsibility in our company to make sure it's topped off. Yet we still have trucks that get DEF tanks filled with diesel or they just run it dry or refuse to refill it because they don't know how. đ€Šđœââïž
I watched your video and appreciate it. One thing I changed is I put the breather on the opposite side, and then hold the bottle the opposite way. It just seemed to flow better after I used 2 bottles I changed it up like pouring a quart of oil. Always better with the straight side up.
Old retired guy here driving a 26ft Penske rental across country and thanks for the video..
Get it! Thanks.
ive been looking at diesel cars and had no idea why there where two gas caps. Thanks for the video my man, helped me out.
Also to the people commenting on how basic this is.. why even watch the video?
I personally use truck stop DEF dispensed from the pump. No guessing, take only what you need, and itâs cheaper than the jugs too. About $2.50-$2.75 per gallon in my area. The best part is you wonât have a partial filled jug lying around.
@Bess Ross Yep! Trust me you don't want the nasty ass DEF they're serving at the pump. Fresh and clean is the key, I'll fool around with the jugs for that extra bit of reassurance.
@@10Gauge fresh from a jug that might have been in a whare house for months and on a store shelf months longer? Fresh is from the big rig pumps because they go through so much of it , they have to constantly bring it in fresh. They also have to keep it fresh at these big pumps because if a diesel fuel stop sold bad DEF, there would be many many big rigs having trouble from it and they usually keep good records when and where they buy it from so the store would be easy to make liable.
Great video! Can you cover the difference of square vs round pegs and how to figure out which one goes in which hole?

Thanks! As a new Chevy 2500 Duramax owner this helps me fill it up and keep my clothes clean!
You're welcome!
Video helped allot. Truck I use makes it very hard to pour Def in because they don't give you much room to life the jugs makes no sense. But the air spout tip helped allot cus I thought you had to pull it out and I was getting Def everywhere lols
I agree you would think that the rubber bleeder valve should be up but it really does not matter where its at. Think about it when your pouring the valve is always covered in def.
Thanks for sharing.
You explain the issues we are up against nicely
Thanks!
Thank you I hope I can do it just like you did on my new Dodge truck
Actually pour the jug other way around with black rubber facing the other way. The air break at the top of the jug allows for the air to actually escape out of the black vent. Pouring your way thereâs no air break and the black rubbers under the fluid level.

WTF ? I watched this waiting for the secret? Really need a video to open a jug? Our society is doomed.
was expecting someone to say good job lol!
I feel like I just watched the movie Idiocracy again.
I just go to Buc-ees and get DEF. They have several dedicated pumps for it at a fraction of the price of buying a 2 gallon jug at the local auto-parts store. I don't think Buc-ees is a nationwide chain though. Surprised more places don't offer it from the pump.
People who pour jugs with handle up and spout down are backwards.
Air entering the jug is more important than liquid leaving the jug.
Enlighten yourselves by trying it spout up.
And pop cans. Turn it so the opening is on the side to balance the air entry with the liquid exiting and you'll get a cleaner pour with less fizz.
I just pull into a truck stop fuel island when it's time to top off the def tank.
Thanks đ
Youâre welcome đ
Should I worry about a bit of the paper seal accidentally dropping into the tank? Not sure if itâs a threat to the DEF injector and warrants a tank drop
Luckily the local auto parts store sells def at whole sale. I know a guy who uses a VP racing jug and has it filled. The valve on the jug makes it way easier.
Yes sir I want to see more video GMC SIERRA 2021 video how to Put a DEF Diesel
Thatâs crazy⊠I usually go to the pumps and get my def, itâs cheaper and I donât have to worry about the plastic jugsâŠ.then again I do realize a lot of people canât get it at pumpsâŠ

I have a 6.7 litre 2013 Ford F350. The warning system just came on to add DEF as it now has 330 miles left. Thank you for your video as it really makes sense however I'm not sure how much to put in. I just bought a 2.5 gal DEF fluid. According to the manual I think I have a 6 gal tank but could be 5 gal. From what I have read it says do not overflow or I may ruin the tank. From what I have read the reason is due to potential freezing. That is not an issue where we are. How much should I add or should I just add until it fills up? Thank you
It should stop when full my 2012 f350 would.
its funny i see lot of posts making fun of this video... like this was such a no brainer... sad fact is ... and im willing to bet on this.... that there are more then just a few folks out there that had no idea what the air breather was for... let alone know that it is an air breather and may have even plugged it lol.

After you delete it, use the DEF fill tube and tank for a piggy bank for loose change. Put a threaded opening on bottom to retrieve coins.

For me it always works out better if I turn the container on its side and pour. Works for oil, antifreeze, def, petty much anything.
I set mine on a step ladder and use my shaker siphon
Nicely done. You're very personable with your presentation and very clear when you speak. I just bought my first diesel truck and was wondering about how this is done the right way. My truck comes with a nice information screen that keeps an eye on the DEF amount. How low should you allow the amount to be (percentage wise) before you need to fill the DEF tank?
Try to keep it mostly full, never let it get really low.
Thank you!
Just filled my def tank over spilled and the gauge shows one line bellow full?? Is it because I over spilled it?? Itâs a 2022 GMC hd duramax. Thanks
Never heard of that, I will be interested to know what you find.
7.3 checking in. What's DEF again?
I got my work truck and I donât know how often I should add it
Depends on your truck and fuel economy, but probably around a gallon of def, per tank of fuel.
My catalytic converter failed at 80000 miles & cost $2100 to have it replaced in Yuma while on vacation from Calgary. Now I donât trust my $85000 Ram towing my 45â fifth wheel . Thinking about eliminating the def system but âŠâŠit is illegal in some states âŠwhat are the chances?
Or, you could go around back to the big truck fuel lanes..where they have DEF at the pump..
You could also fuel up at the truck islands too.
You can get fuel at fuel islands now too? Wow look at all this modern technology!
You can delete it and not worry about it.
Hay man that rubber air relief valve fell into my DEF then down into the DEF tub in my truck. Do you know if I should drain it or suggestions to get it out thanks.
I't will pass through eventually like a kidney stone.....
Thank you I also dont like the tabs like that then your fingers get a mess too, and the little pieces of foil all over and makes the jug look messy, same with peanut butter jars.
I can never get the air tube facing up on blue def jugs.
Those spouts always leak I never use them I use a long transmission funnel throw away the spout and poke a few holes in the handle and pour it right out of the bottle into the funnel. Works 100% every time.
I'm sure I haven't seen DEF tanks on any of the diesel vehicles I've driven. Is this a more recent addition to diesel trucks? I've only driven 80's and mid 90's diesel trucks.
Like 2010 plus. Id say
Am I suppose to drain the old def thatâs in the tank or do I just add the new one and let it mix with the old
Just add to what's there unless its contaminated.
Do you need to go empty in the tank or could you top of the every month regardless of the level.
Best not to go empty. Top off every month.
No need for this anymore đ€©đ€©
How often do you have to add DEF fluid?
Depends on how much you drive. Watch your gauge and try not to let it too low.
Can you use the DEF at the pump to fill up and eco diesel?
Just make sure the DEF goes in the correct hole, NOT your gas tank.
How often do you have to fill the DEF FORD 6.7 disel?
Depends on what the truck is used for daily. DEF consumption can vary.
Would this product work the same on a regular gasoline old truck? Thanks
Give us a call 855-903-2611.
My truck gauge still tells me Ive got 21 miles till engine shuts down to 50mph. Ive topped off the DEF 3 times in hopes something will change ⊠dashboard still beeping at my every 30 seconds.
Keeping the DEF full is great practice but at some point the truck has to go into Regen.
Should I run the blue def Platinum in 2020 ram 2500 6.7L
We really donât have a DEF brand preference, we just look for quality containers on our personal vehicles. Less spills.
I missed it, how did you get the cap off ???
2:38 all in the wrist
boss just threw truck keys at me and said you got it dont worry just keep in mind how big you are....threw me the keys to a full size penske never drove anything bigger than a ford ranger.....im getting low on def and just wanted to make sure there were no secrets to this and not knowing one would kill the engine or something
The def can damage the paint ?
Always good to wash it off if you spill some.
Can you add def while truck is running?
Yes. I donât suggest it because you can hear if the tank is filling to the top so you have a possibility of overfilling.
Fill up at the truck stop
iâm about to have to put DEF in my 2015 Golf TDIâŠwould you happen to know how much DEF the tank holds?
Fill until full. đđŒ
Look up "emissions delete" and do your car a favor.
I just use the def at the pump at truck stops.
Does anyone know if it resets on its own if I continue to drive the car? I just topped mine off and itâs still showing 17% after refilling, thx ( I have an equinox Chevrolet)
It should reset, have seen problems with the DEF level sensor so if it doesnât catch up, suspect that.
I have a question I filled my def tank on my ram eco diesel . When I filled it gauge didnât move and itâs fill . Now p203e code came up . Iâm at witts end trying figure out what to do . Figure I would ask an expert
The DEF level sensors and heaters in these trucks are known to have issues.

Question:
Do new Fords have issues with the fuel system contamination ??
Brother-in-law bought a brand new F350 back 2019.
7-4-2021: The truck has 38K miles and he had issues with the fuel system. Ford claims he has a contaminated fuel system due to âDEF in the gas tankâ ???
He swears he has never mixed fuels.
Ford is saying itâs a $13K job to fix (obviously not covered under warranty).
Heâs not the only person I know that was given the same solution by Ford. Is this some defect with Ford? Is there a way DEF can mix with diesel somewhere along the fuel system similar to how the EGR-coolers fail and allow coolant into the exhaust?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated! Iâd hate for other to cough up $13k for something Ford should be responsible for.
Funny, Iâve never spilled a drop putting it in. I must be doing something wrongâŠ
What do you do with the D E F that is left in the container? Does it just go to waste?
Usually there is little left in the jug. Just throw it away with the jug.
Just flush it down the John.....it's basically Piss anyway.
Do all diesel trucks have that spot? I have a 7.3 powerstroke and I don't think I have that extra lil dingy next to the fuel tank. đ€ Where do I put it then?
Also is there a way to check the levels of def? Can you over fill it? Just bought the truck 3 weeks ago not sure if it needs it or not.
DEF only pertains to the newer truck. You wonât have any need to worry about it with a 7.3L. In most light duty applications, vehicle werenât using DEF fluid until the 2011 model year. Enjoy your truck!
Like that style diesel fuel cap, you got a supplier or part number for it?
This one? www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/1c1602/
No the one in the video said itâs a easy fuel capless
How when we know when to Stop ??
You should have a gauge on your dash.
In an effort to improve air quality, man is now adding empty def containers into landfills. I go to the truck stop to refill my DEF. Thatâs just me.
You and me both whenever its close to E I fill the Def and diesel at the pumps
And burning a lot more fuel too.
Delete your trucks.
I get both fuel and DEF from the truck stop. I hear so many arguments back and forth about the DEF from the pump but I havenât had a problem yet.
Step 1: Delete DEF system
Step 2: Profit
How do you know how much to put in? You just have to wait until it spills out to know itâs full?
Refer to your owners manual at the DEP capacity and what level the DEF light comes on.
Use the Ford Motorcraft spout, it stops when full. No spillage.
The real question is how to stop it from filling if there is too much in the jug. Does it have a seal on the hose?
No, just fill slowly.
How much Def was that? Was your Def needle on empty?
2.5 gallon.
1/2 full or less.
Ram 1500 Ecodiesel will take 3 jugs from empty to full.
Why do people say "go ahead"? It makes not sense.
I just bought a ford 2020 diesel engine
Do I need to full the DEF all the time I fill the fuel tank
Please help . I dont want to mess up my new truck
No, just when the DEF gets low.
You should get a message on you dash when it's getting low.
2020 Ford No Owners Manual!!?? đ đ€Ł
Is there a reason I shouldn't be using truck stop def?
No. Its all the same.
Yes! DEF has a shelf life. If it's older than 6months or has been stored in a very warm place it can be BAD!!
Sir. I have a Question. My husband let the DEF tank empty and later filled it. The truck won't respond like before. It's allegedly crystalized in the tank. Is there a way to clean it?
Any codes?
I would assume you would have to drop(pull) the tank and clean it by hand. I don't really think any of the additive pours really do anything to help.
Unbolt the tank, scrub it with water and degreaser, rinse thoroughly with water, and then leave it out to dry overnight and then bolt it back in and fill with DEF.
Disclaimer: I'm not a diesel mechanic, just a guy who has done some work on his own cars/trucks and I assume it is a similar process with a DEF tank as a fuel tank.
Just delete it and problem solved.
@@thoroughbreddiesel never got the codes but fortunately insurance payed 3k to fix it. We're saving up to do a delete
@@carls2210 yes we plan on doing so
Only one problem (big problem)! If you are topping of your tank and you don't know how much is in there, you would overflow the tank. There are diesel cars on the market that will not hold a whole jug of that fluid.
Not saying youre wrong because i dont know but what car or truck cant hold 2 1/2 gallons of DEF?
