  • đŸ’Ș Using and refilling diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is increasingly becoming a common aspect of owning a diesel-powered car or truck. This chemical is designed to reduce vehicle emissions by combining with exhaust gases after they have left the engine, which means that, over time, your DEF tank will start to run low. Wade shows you how to fill your DEF tank on your later model diesel trucks with no spills. Fill Blue! Watch as we show you how to properly fill your diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank and what is def fluid?

    I have driven over the road diesel tractor trailer units for somewhere north of three million miles, retired 14 years ago. So see my point, when i bought my Chev Duramax recently, I knew nothing about DEF as it came about shortly after I retired. So maybe this is a simple video, but knowledge is always welcome to build confidence in doing things right! Thanks, Jim C.

Yet we still have trucks that get DEF tanks filled with diesel or they just run it dry or refuse to refill it because they don't know how. đŸ€ŠđŸœâ€â™‚ïž

    I personally use truck stop DEF dispensed from the pump. No guessing, take only what you need, and it’s cheaper than the jugs too. About $2.50-$2.75 per gallon in my area. The best part is you won’t have a partial filled jug lying around.

    • @10Gauge
      @10Gauge Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @Bess Ross Yep! Trust me you don't want the nasty ass DEF they're serving at the pump. Fresh and clean is the key, I'll fool around with the jugs for that extra bit of reassurance.

      @@10Gauge fresh from a jug that might have been in a whare house for months and on a store shelf months longer? Fresh is from the big rig pumps because they go through so much of it , they have to constantly bring it in fresh. They also have to keep it fresh at these big pumps because if a diesel fuel stop sold bad DEF, there would be many many big rigs having trouble from it and they usually keep good records when and where they buy it from so the store would be easy to make liable.

    People who pour jugs with handle up and spout down are backwards.
    Air entering the jug is more important than liquid leaving the jug.
    Enlighten yourselves by trying it spout up.
    And pop cans. Turn it so the opening is on the side to balance the air entry with the liquid exiting and you'll get a cleaner pour with less fizz.

Thank you for your video as it really makes sense however I'm not sure how much to put in. I just bought a 2.5 gal DEF fluid. According to the manual I think I have a 6 gal tank but could be 5 gal. From what I have read it says do not overflow or I may ruin the tank. From what I have read the reason is due to potential freezing. That is not an issue where we are. How much should I add or should I just add until it fills up? Thank you

    He swears he has never mixed fuels.
    Ford is saying it’s a $13K job to fix (obviously not covered under warranty).
    He’s not the only person I know that was given the same solution by Ford. Is this some defect with Ford? Is there a way DEF can mix with diesel somewhere along the fuel system similar to how the EGR-coolers fail and allow coolant into the exhaust?
    Any advise would be greatly appreciated! I’d hate for other to cough up $13k for something Ford should be responsible for.

      I would assume you would have to drop(pull) the tank and clean it by hand. I don't really think any of the additive pours really do anything to help.
      Unbolt the tank, scrub it with water and degreaser, rinse thoroughly with water, and then leave it out to dry overnight and then bolt it back in and fill with DEF.
      Disclaimer: I'm not a diesel mechanic, just a guy who has done some work on his own cars/trucks and I assume it is a similar process with a DEF tank as a fuel tank.
