I think that "joke" es more important that we think. When Subaru first time dies, he says "I'll save you" and touch her hand. But Subaru thinks is touching Satella's hand. I mean, he is touching a girl, that looks exactly like Satella, and Subaru thinks her name is Satella.... I wouldn't be surprised if we discover that he did somehow a contract with the real Satella just in that moment.

Fun fact about the hoodie he was wearing to trick emilia it has a spell woven into it that prevents recognition. the interesting part is that the spell is just as strong as the one that makes gospels unreadable to outsiders. So the fact that Petra the little village girl saw through it is a pretty important thing to note. It might be important in a later season if they adapt more of the story.

If you all have not watched Re:Zero Frozen Bond, please do, it's very important to the plot, and provides important back story for Emilia and Puck. It helps you better understand Emilia's current mentality and why Puck is called the great spirit of fire.

What Rem did for Subaru, he did for Emilia in this episode. Great character development and progression since episode 1. Great action, interesting story, lovable characters. Great show!
Subaru loves Rem romantically even confessed to her but ofcourse its cut from the anime and he has even agreed to get into polygamous relationship between emilia and rem albeit emilia agrees to it and that's why in the end credits he was trying to ask emilia if he can uknow do the threeway thing and then "Who the f is rem?" happens
Rem is great. My favorite character. Honestly tho its better the way it is. The unreciprocated love is tragic but thats what makes it even more beautiful. Like how sad storys can be sometimes be prettier than happy stories.

I believe the reason was to test Subaru’s knowledge. He didn’t know about Satella so he didn’t know anything about common knowledge of where he was.
