  • Tutorial on how to make a high voltage power supply that outputs around 10,000 volts AC, using a car ignition coil and a light dimmer.
Many many thanks to OBV10U3_NINJA for the design of the intro!
WARNING: This device is easily capable of delivering a fatal electric shock, you must take all the precautions needed to work with high voltage.

Most cars run at 12V. Putting 120v @ 60Hz or 240v 13 amps @50 Hz as we have in Europe straight into an ignition coil sounds like a Bad Idea(tm) resulting in lots of magic smoke and possibly death. It would be much safer and efficient to drive this thing with a bench power supply or a car battery modulated to a few KHz. It only takes a few component which can be salvaged from scrap TVs

Hi Ludic Science, I am building a rat zapper that will utilizing your schematic and adding a PIR sensor switch at the 220V source plus an MCB as fuse. One question, If NEGATIVE coil terminal and the HIGH VOLTAGE terminal successfully zap a rat and the rat will stay there, do you thing the MCB fuse will trip down (due to shortage in the circuit)?
I want the circuit to be automatically ON when PIR sensor catch a move, so it can zap multiple time per setup.
Currently I am using mosquito zapper part to electrify the zapper, but I need to use 220v to 3.7V DC stepdown and currently it works great with small mouse. I want to build a little bigger zapper that will kill bigger rodent for continuous use. The circuit is use in our own property with enough security inside a barn.

Anyway when the ignition coil operates in its normal conditions it operates in switched mode. So self induction generates about 100V at the primary. The problem here may be the heavy operating duty cycle (so the high average power) more than the voltage amplitude.

    Hello, and good videos.
    1) You use AC input, but... is it AC in the input of the coil?
I would like to use AC in the input of the ignition coil. Thanks.
    2) I have 250 AC in the wall socket, can I use 1000 Volts, 1uF Capacitor or it would be too much?

Can we build it without the capacitor as there is ac current coming from the ac power supply

The cap probably saves the 12volt car coil from an early death. It is acting as a capacitive dropper There is no other reason for it I can see.
