  • Mount Fuji is one of Japan's most iconic landmarks, and in recent years, social media has made photographing it even more popular.
But that's created a bit of a problem for residents of Fujikawaguchiko, a town with an incredible view, which is being swamped by millions of tourists.
Residents have now decided they've had enough.
And to keep the selfie-crowds away, they're taking the unlikely step of putting up a huge barrier to block the view.

Fujikawaguchiko is a tourist town. But that spot in front of the convenient store is very narrow despite numerous signs in multiple languages asking people not to take pictures on the road... there are several safer spots to take photos just a short walk away, for example at the train station. Is a shame because Fujisan is sacred to the Japanese people and surely blocking it is the last thing they want to do

Japanese TV news has much better footage of the serious problems these tourists have been causing. The BBC and other foreign media have done a very poor job of describing the actual problem and just how bad the situation has gotten, and how much it's affected other local businesses financially. People weren't just jaywalking and ignoring traffic rules, which is quite dangerous in itself for this busy road. They were completely blocking businesses opposite the Lawson all day and preventing customers from using them, waking up locals by trying to beat other tourists by going there at 3AM-5AM and yelling loudly, stepping over barriers to trespass onto private property and climb buildings to get better shots for their insta or tiktok, eating meals on private property or in the middle of side streets, forcing locals and businesses to have to go out and pick up their litter several times a day, and blocking roads with their suitcases as they ate or rested. This neighborhood tried signs, fences, security guards and traffic police, and that still didn't deter these social media clout chasers. Commenters suggesting building viewing platforms and charging tourists don't get it at all. There are not only many places in town and numerous free viewing spots where you can get far better shots of Mount Fuji, there are many other convenience stores, including Lawsons, where you can practically get the same shot with the convenience store in front and mountain in the background. These people aren't interested in Mount Fuji. They just want to copy a viral photo they saw, which is why they flock to this particular Lawson, even though it isn't an actual tourist spot. At some point, someone is going to get hit by a car or fall off a fence or building if this doesn't stop.

I saw a news report about this, and the area around the convenience store was full of garbage, with people dumping a lot of garbage on the terraces of nearby residences, and people posing for photos in the middle of the busy road, blocking the line of cars. Also, it seems that people are leaving their rental bicycles in other people's yards, and even if a security guard is posted to warn them, no one will follow their instructions, and the elderly security guard is being intimidated.

It's a publicity exercise created by the Japanese tourism authority to create more interest in Japan and specifically Mt Fuji. As a result of this publicity campaign, Japan has seen a record number of visitors these few months. The simple solution is to charge visitors and tourists an entry fee which will increase revenue to provide better services for locals and visitors. Now, what has happened to the Japanese culture of being polite, courteous and welcoming to guests? They could even facilitate the visitors or guests by building a special lookout post, fee included of course,

Charge a fee for taking “the photo”, create jobs for crowd controllers and insist tourists book ahead for their “insta pic”.
If they travel from afar then a small fee will not hurt the pocket of the dumb tourist sheep.
Some countries charge small fee for locals and larger fee for foreigners.

It seems most tourists take a day's bus tour to vist to this Japanese town to visit mount fuji.
Rather than build this wall, make a deterrent business out it.For example If you are a days bus tourist visitor, you pay an additional say $200 fee except you have reserved a hotel room in the town, then your pay much less. The revenue can used to address the present problem.

      This is a residential area.
There are other places to take pictures.
They want to take a picture of Lawson with Mt.Fuji, so they gather in front of Lawson and not elsewhere.
Please imagine a large group of tourists in front of one shop in a residential area in the countryside
