- Mount Fuji is one of Japan's most iconic landmarks, and in recent years, social media has made photographing it even more popular.
But that's created a bit of a problem for residents of Fujikawaguchiko, a town with an incredible view, which is being swamped by millions of tourists.
Residents have now decided they've had enough.
And to keep the selfie-crowds away, they're taking the unlikely step of putting up a huge barrier to block the view.

Yeah that was terrible filming, you could see how much she was trying to dirrct the camera towards the area of interest

I'm Japanese, but I don't understand what's so good about the blue Lawson sign and why people would want to take a picture of it with Mt. Fuji.😮
because someone on tiktok did it so now every sheep has to follow

I agree - and there are far nicer spots (with stunning views) to take photos of mount Fuji. I mean there are countless parking areas alongside KawaguchiKo and Saiko and I have some really lovely photos taken over the hills from Motosu-ko.
Fujikawaguchiko is a tourist town. But that spot in front of the convenient store is very narrow despite numerous signs in multiple languages asking people not to take pictures on the road... there are several safer spots to take photos just a short walk away, for example at the train station. Is a shame because Fujisan is sacred to the Japanese people and surely blocking it is the last thing they want to do
Imagine if Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada, started charging people just to visit their town so they can see the actual Green Gables Heritage Site?
The famed Japanese culture of hospitality and courtesy is gone! Yet, they are still promoting visitors to Japan. Shall I visit Korea and China instead? The Chinese authority doesn't prevent anyone from climbing their famed Great Wall = or taking photos of it.
The camera guy is taking it personal, when she order gesturing him to film that direction, his like don't tell me where to film.
He is just conveying a message - what's so great of the mountain? There are thousands of amazing mountains I have seen!
We're all fucked. People will go anywhere to take a pictue of something they have seen a picture of online and ruin everywhere they go

I bet the cameraman is Japanese, this is Japanese style reporting..the problem is Japanese news anchors do not usually move aggressively like that..😅
Peace is priceless .
I agree with them .
That's part of living in tourism towns.
Canada's Atlantic provinces have numerous popular tourist attractions, including the Green Gables Heritage Site in Cavendish, Peggy's Cove Lighthouse in Peggy's Cove, the Bluenose in Lunenburg, Louisbourg fortress in Cape Breton, or Gros Morne National Park north of Deer Lake.
I feel like there are other places from which you can see that gigantic mountain

I don't want to see the reporter ... she's the one blocking my view ...
Camera guy is horrible smh
Why blame the cameraman? He is tactfully conveying to the reporter - What's there to see? It's covered by cloud as suggested by the reporter.
Please try to imagine.
One day, what do you do if a foreigner starts to make noise in front of the house?
Its not blocking the view of the mountain. Just the view from that exact spot. Chinese tourist buses can take them to safer areas to get photos.
geez, where are the times when reporters were able to stand still in a spot? This broadcast makes me dizzy...
Reporter's style of reporting is a disruption. It should also be blocked.
Time to visit Belgium
Cameraman blocked our view of Mount Fuji.
Can you not just walk around?
that's the purpose. they want tourists to spread and find somewhere else.
Dumb tourist blocked the road bruh that's why they made the wall
Oh the irony if that screen ever becomes the next photo magnet 😂😂😂 Screeny McScreenface anyone!?
She is in the road. No sense these reporters.😂
i think building a overpass would benefit both locals and tourists
Japanese TV news has much better footage of the serious problems these tourists have been causing. The BBC and other foreign media have done a very poor job of describing the actual problem and just how bad the situation has gotten, and how much it's affected other local businesses financially. People weren't just jaywalking and ignoring traffic rules, which is quite dangerous in itself for this busy road. They were completely blocking businesses opposite the Lawson all day and preventing customers from using them, waking up locals by trying to beat other tourists by going there at 3AM-5AM and yelling loudly, stepping over barriers to trespass onto private property and climb buildings to get better shots for their insta or tiktok, eating meals on private property or in the middle of side streets, forcing locals and businesses to have to go out and pick up their litter several times a day, and blocking roads with their suitcases as they ate or rested. This neighborhood tried signs, fences, security guards and traffic police, and that still didn't deter these social media clout chasers. Commenters suggesting building viewing platforms and charging tourists don't get it at all. There are not only many places in town and numerous free viewing spots where you can get far better shots of Mount Fuji, there are many other convenience stores, including Lawsons, where you can practically get the same shot with the convenience store in front and mountain in the background. These people aren't interested in Mount Fuji. They just want to copy a viral photo they saw, which is why they flock to this particular Lawson, even though it isn't an actual tourist spot. At some point, someone is going to get hit by a car or fall off a fence or building if this doesn't stop.
most of the people now travel for that like on social media, but not for the very pleasure of traveling - it's all fake
A far more sensible solution would be to impose massive fines for illegal parking and littering. Wardens could be employed to enforce this, and a good profit still made.
They're tourists, they'll just go home without paying. You going to send a bailiff to Thailand?
@@noseboop4354 dude, the Japanese government could just give the rules "pay the fines or we would deport you" i bet they are gonna pay..😅
I saw a news report about this, and the area around the convenience store was full of garbage, with people dumping a lot of garbage on the terraces of nearby residences, and people posing for photos in the middle of the busy road, blocking the line of cars. Also, it seems that people are leaving their rental bicycles in other people's yards, and even if a security guard is posted to warn them, no one will follow their instructions, and the elderly security guard is being intimidated.
@@noseboop4354 That's why you have on the spot fines.
I don’t understand why people would jaywalk across the street. I guess our tour group were well behave. We stayed on the same side of the street as Lawson and was able to take the beautiful pictures of Mt Fuji.
Spring is a perfect time to come and visit the wonderful city of Montreal !
A small Japanese town complains about everybody turning up to take pictures, and the first thing BBC do is send somebody with a camera, even bigger 🤦 well done BBC
And? Are they not allowed to report the news or something? It's called the Streisand effect.
Wow this screen is unique! Let’s go take photos next to it
Wars and walls. What an inheritance to leave behind.
If you show up with a Fujifilm camera will they let you take a picture? 📷 🏔
The shot with the lawsons in it actually looks very nice. I can see why people like it. I think kapan is correct in blocking the view since tourists are disrespectful.
Respect them for trying to protect their Island, Britain wouldn't have the balls...
Smehow does not feel as a solution.
🏝️ There's Mount Mayon in the Philippines. It is like Mount Fuji but tropical. You can take unlimited photos. 😊
Mount Fuji is like mount Ararat ... greeting from Armenia.
So come to Hawaii I jump in front of Mauna Loa
There's something uniquely awful about tourists in japan. How hard is it to behave in a foreign country?
Tourist are tourists Japan is just really, really up tight
And still has a lot of there old believes ingrained into them
Like the thought of hafu which basically means that even if your born or are half Japanese you are not considered Japanese you are still a outsider
I mean they love 1940 Germany for a reason
That Lawson just lost all its income lol
I was there last April the peak of cherry blossoms and got some minutes at that Lawson store but the mountain is not visible due to clouds and now this place is in the news the past weeks.
Seems like there's waaaaay more tourist than before COVID lockdowns.
On a fine day, you can sometimes see an oyaji buying a Strong Zero.
I don't know if it's true or not but another video clip says the blocking was made due to the tourists from chyna whose public ethics were terrible enough throwing all garbages they carried in a strong belief that that action would bring a fortune, so that all tourists spots were filled with the flood of garbages.

Sad that it should come to this. Similar to the tourist tax in Venice. Disgraceful to litter and flout the traffic laws

Better they litter at that one place than all over Japan.
looks like an advert for LAWSON ?
I say all visitors should now crowd around the screen and click that. Annoy the locals that it made the crowding worse
They should erect an official viewing platform, it would pay for itself 😊

I appreciate BBC not taking the money shot 😂 except in B-role
I wonder if this vapid reporter knows what a “money shot” really is 😂
It's a publicity exercise created by the Japanese tourism authority to create more interest in Japan and specifically Mt Fuji. As a result of this publicity campaign, Japan has seen a record number of visitors these few months. The simple solution is to charge visitors and tourists an entry fee which will increase revenue to provide better services for locals and visitors. Now, what has happened to the Japanese culture of being polite, courteous and welcoming to guests? They could even facilitate the visitors or guests by building a special lookout post, fee included of course,
Looks like the cam dude was trolling us for not following her finger towards Mt. Fuji
Can you build a Pedestrian Bridge?
This is one of the most peaceful videos on the BBC channel❤ but I was shocked to realize that Japan is disrupting the harmony of the world.
It's really embarrassing😢
Please explain how it is even possible to block a mountain that rises 300m above it's surroundings?
I believe they're just blocking that one spot that has become a magnet for photos and selfies, so residents have hundreds of annoying tourists outside their house all day.
They're also putting a large blanket over the mountain, obviously

Since when do news readers in the UK refer to the pavement as a 'sidewalk'? Before anyone says that it is called a 'sidewalk' in Japan, as a 33 year Japan resident I can tell you that is nonsense.
As a Brit, I never hear anybody calling it a sidewalk or a pavement. It's a path

Charge a fee for taking “the photo”, create jobs for crowd controllers and insist tourists book ahead for their “insta pic”.
If they travel from afar then a small fee will not hurt the pocket of the dumb tourist sheep.
Some countries charge small fee for locals and larger fee for foreigners.

Congratulations Japan, your problem is now tourists with drones 😂
Chinese drones that like to peep into onsens and military.
It seems most tourists take a day's bus tour to vist to this Japanese town to visit mount fuji.
Rather than build this wall, make a deterrent business out it.For example If you are a days bus tourist visitor, you pay an additional say $200 fee except you have reserved a hotel room in the town, then your pay much less. The revenue can used to address the present problem.
