- Explain One Play: Warriors Triangle-and-2, Box-and-1 and other exotic defenses against KD and Harden
by @EricApricot
I received quite a few requests to look at the Warriors defense in the big win against the Brooklyn Nets, 2021.11.16.GSW-BRK. On the broadcast they mentioned triangle-and-two, and some people were wondering what that meant. So I'm going to look at nice sampling of the different defensive schemes that GSW used against Kevin Durant and James Harden’s Nets.
We’ll see box-and-one (and its pro origins in the 2019 NBA Finals), triangle-and-two, and inverted drop coverage with standard weak low man rotation. Co-starring Stephen Curry, Otto Porter Jr, Jonathan Kuminga, Damion Lee, Andre Iguodala, and Gary Payton II. Also with James Harden and Kevin Durant.

Yap, you've quickly jumped to my top 3 Bball YT channels.
You have a huge fan from Ghana 🇬🇭, West Africa.
Welcome! Amazing how the internet can connect people across the world!
This is what I'm waiting for because I'm not too familiar about set defense. keep it up bro.
We're all learning. Makes the game much more interesting & appreciate the Warriors' skills even more. Kuminga! Whoa.
I always enjoy the Warriors bench getting diagrammed.
We miss so much - but Dub Nation HQ - like Draymond - sees all.
That, *that* Kuminga play is why I love this channel! I didn't even really process it while watching the game because I was keying on Steph defending Harden. Dray and the front office saw that monster potential.
Thanks Apricot! Highlights cover offense. You are restoring balance to the YT universe.
I love the breakdowns. When you're watching it live as a casual fan, you don't noticed all the details. The amount of non-verbal communication that's happening with the Warriors' D is so awesome to see in this video. It also showcase the value of a vet like Iggy and Otto Jr.
I have to agree with so many other's on this channel. This is my favorite bball channel by a wide margin. A beautiful mix of brilliant analysis far beyond what is offered anywhere else and an equally brilliant level of wit and humor. I hope you can keep up the amazing work, because seeing a new video posted makes my day.
You are too kind. And I’m not sure I can keep up this pace, but your encouragement gives me energy
@@DubNationHQ I'm grateful for whatever I get. This was a super quick turnaround - ready for tonight! 🙏🏻
I am recovering from surgery and this has brought me so much joy initially I was at risk for ripping out my stitches from laughter. It’s all good now. Lol
Your comment makes me feel both warm and also scared for your health
@@DubNationHQ I am fine now. Well enough to appreciate the Andre and Coach why have you forsaken me jokes. Please continue giving good content I am here for it.
The humor is definitely dangerous. I've learned to stop multi-tasking during these. Take care and speedy recovery!
"By majority vote of the people's court that was declared a tasty dime" 🤣🤣
Finally one video were you don't mention Klay play 😂
You made me laugh.
Another humorous and informative basketball defense education! Thank you 🙏🏻 "Baryshnikov Steph" should get bonus points. There was a quick shot at the end of the half (when Nets were feeling the tide changing & everyone knew what was coming) and Harden gave ia look to Steph like "what's happening, man?" Steph -🤷🏻♂️ That's when I knew - Warriors got this.
You have the best Warriors channel!!! I almost don't want you to become too popular, might give our secrets away😂😂😂
Kuminga's sense of timing is so good, I think maybe the atomic clock people should get in touch. Might help with their calibrations.
Thank you! 🥰 I always love your in-depth explanation of GSW's defense and their offense, bec during the game sometimes the ball was like a blur with the Warriors always running from one end to the other side of the court, with the crazy multiple passes, it can be dizzying sometimes to watch them. Warriors love their fastbreak. Im learning a lot from your videos too about players' movements. And it's never boring as well with your funny side comments. I always wait for your upload after every game of GSW. 👍👍😁
The rest of the league will be cursing the Raptors for introducing the Warriors to Box & 1 defense. Now the Warriors are using it on the rest of the league straight to the Best Defense in the NBA.
I do think warriors hiring nick nurse's assistant have to do something about that.
Thanks for the video man! For responding to our requests :D Understood and appreciated! Especially, the effort that it takes to create these videos! The dedication!!! Much appreciated!
Btw, the activity in your website is totally lit! Will surely check it out!
I love how much zone the team is playing. Klay won’t have to be the defender he was before the injuries.
Eric, you're the best 🔥
We ran a triangle and two defensive zone when i was in school... Great defense for weak perimeter defenders...
Much love, respect.
Thanks much. Totally helps!! Great vid.
Why few subscribers. You deserve more subscribers
finally....... yieeeeee
Keep it up, James. They can't stop you from getting those cheap fouls... LOL
Aye, I was waiting for this. Surprised you didn't cover it on first vid
only so much can be covered per video, sadly...
Was hoping to see Steph's strip of Harden as well but hey, these were great plays too!
Bongo drum celebration needs to be a thing
Please breakdown more especially on the 3rdQ where Warriors really owning the Nets both offensively and defensively. Game practically was over after the 3rdQ
To be honest, I did a deep dive into about half the Q3 and then I got very tired. And now, the moment has passed and I’ll probably just move on to the next games… Maybe someday I’ll release it as a Bootlegs and Outtakes session haha
@@DubNationHQ Okay. Will looking forward to it and I really appreciate what have you done so far
@@DubNationHQ happy with whatever you do. I'm a novice bball fan but learning so much from whatever you can do.
@@DubNationHQ Don't worry about whether something is 'timely' enough. I'd still click on you discussing plays from any game this year. In fact, I went through and scoured your channel to find other videos no matter how old. You are offering something so unique there is literally nothing comparable anywhere on CZcams. I hope the channel keeps growing so you can keep doing this!
I felt a shift at end of 2nd qtr. Harden gave Steph a look like "WTH man?" felt like everyone knew Warriors had it. It's fun to know how & why. We'll keep learning! 💙💥💛
Very helpful, especially how the People's Court votes. Thx!
The People's Court never lies.
Entertaining & educational. Question: I don’t want other teams coaches learning how to break our janky zone defenses, but how does Stephen Curry attack the box and 1? Why don’t other teams use more these janky (box and one, triangle and two) on the warriors? Thank you.
I enjoy all of your videos! But am concerned that other teams will discover your channel and figure out what we’ve been doing to them for the past 14 games 😜
Pretty sure teams have analysts to read plays like what Apricot does
Other teams already know. They can't stop it because they don't have the personel to keep up with all of the ball movement and player movemnt. Don't forget Kerr's offense is a mixure of the triangle principles, the spurs sets, and euro ball movement and tempo. There are even elements of D'Antonio's system. It's beauty to watch. Best Basketball breakdown channel hands down on CZcams.
@@laniedmd1126 yes I know other teams have a whole crew that do what the great Apricot does. But sometimes you wonder if they do.
@@christopherrichardson1730 Spot on. But the warriors are able to adapt and change on the fly which is what makes it so difficult. That doesn’t just happen. It’s a result of great coaching, drafting, and player development. #lightyears.
Don’t worry, teams know. They hire advance scouts to do what I do, except much better and they don’t make educational videos. I’ll prob talk about this in a future mailbag video
WHY ARE YOU SO FUNNY?!
As far as that last pass play, it's possible Steph is looking for the 5th net on the court to stop the cherry pick
Yeah
i don't get it, your videos aren't polished but for some reason i could watch them all day
Thanks, I know they are a bit clunky, but I chose to put energy into making more videos rather than polishing
@@DubNationHQ the quantity is appreciated. It provides a level of charm to em
@@DubNationHQ Keep doing what you're doing - it's wonderful! I can't stop watching either.
And here i thought the referees did something about that gather foul by Harden! whew i guess they fall for it every now and then.. smh.. 😅
Is it normal in the modern nba is constantly be changing up types of defenses?
The box and 1 is effective if a player make eyesolation play, i give credits to Steve kerr its awsome how play depense to nets.
wrong harden torched the box and one in 2019 againist the raptors way before the finals
Do you think them hiring nick nurse's assistant has to do with them mixing up their defense? I think so.
You did not talk about the triangle and two. Like the box and one you use it when there are few shooters on the floor. But when do you use which? They used box and one when KD and JH were attacking. But sometimes they used triangle and two. Maybe they are just mixing it up to confuse Brooklyn.
Are there any inherent weaknesses to the Box-and-1? Like if the other perimeter players can shoot 3s?
Absolutely correct. Also bad if there’s a dominant post player
@@DubNationHQ harden torched the box and one defense in 2019 regular season againist raptors, this myth that nurse first used the box and one on steph curry is a LIE
Personally, I don't like zone defenses, over the course of a game they have too many weaknesses to be used as the main way of defending; good offenses will eventually figure them out.
But I also understand that some players and lineups just don't know what to do against certain zones, and if it works, you have to consider using it; that's the opponents' fault, not yours.
So I'm ok with zones being used in small spurts, just not the same defense for an entire game.
nick nurse first used the box and 1 on james harden during the 2019 regular season not the finals againist the warriors
"Nobody seems to care much where Bembry goes..."
What's a "Bembry?'
🧐🤔🧐
(Googles him)
Oh, he's their Jordan Bell (edit: I mean box score-wise and not size or build).
