    To clarify: To quote SMC, when Billy took over they "shifted the focus of the group towards property development in the mainland" which does not mean they eliminated ceiling fan manufacturing entirely the way Evergo did.

    Fyi: Yung Yau died in 2004, suiciding. Cause he thought he was old and had all kinds of disease. He does not want himself to be a burden to his family anymore. Generally he was depicted as a kind hearted and humble person by the media. (unlike the founder of Evergo) Yung Yau donated a lot and have a few schools in HK named after him.

      I did not know that. That is sad.
      Yes, the founder of Evergo is interesting to say the least.

    "capacitor in the upper canopy" actually existed before 1978, i got 2 fans, both branded wahson from 1969 and 1971 that had their capacitors inside their upper canopy.. that patent could be a different setup or design of capacitor in upper canopy
    in uae, SMC fans are still being sold as SMC fans in addition to their 2 other more economic range brands introduced: ADA and AFA... since 2009, SMC fans had a minor change in their design and have a "original" metal stamp on the motor and blades identifying them from the possible counterfeits that may have existed recently
    SMC also had major changes in the ceiling fan design in 1978, 1983, 1989 and 2009 where in the years mentioned above lots of cost cutting has happened, which eventually led to quality reduction
    im not sure about the earliest possibly 50s SMC ceiling fan, ive seen pictures of them for sale in vietnam, they only had an upper canopy but no lower canopy, where the downrod would fix firectly above the motor shaft without any supports similar to how laguna motor is.. i would assume that time maybe they had capacitors in the upper canopy

      I am pretty sure Moss was doing it before 1978 as well.
      The earliest SMC fans I have seen are 1960s and they had two canopies.

    pretty sure you’re wrong about smc giving up ceiling fans. smcs are still sold here in hk and my bedroom fan is an smc minuet ii from 2014. unless maybe someone else bought out the smc brand while the original smc company went into property

      @@dspiffy yeah that’s more likely. also in hong kong while i do feel like ceiling fans are becoming more popular in homes again after kinda falling out of popularity in the 2000s, i feel like less of them are smc now compared to before, more of them are from (i think?) chinese brands, and brands like philips, hunter pacific, hunter, minka, modern fan co… so i can see why smc’s doing other things more and more

    • @dspiffy
      @dspiffy  Před rokem

      They are probably made in mainland China now. It's cheaper.

      @@dspiffy yep, was just mentioning how they seem to be currently losing competition in the hong kong market to either newer, cheaper chinese brands, or high end western brands
