This speech changed my life. I went back to school.. twice! I’m a preschool teacher in an in-demand field and-soon- I will be able to call myself an archaeologist. I wouldn’t have done it without hearing this, first.
He's trying so hard to make things that are so sad, funny. Attempting to mask the difficulties he had to face as a outsider with jokes and self-deprecating lines. Really glad he came out on top today.
Now we know why Peter has such a great sense of humor: he needed it to survive.

Another, edited version of this popped up in my recommendations in 2022. After watching it for a few minutes and realizing, the audience was edited out (and there was some music and stock footage edited to what he said) I immediately searched for the original, which I find so much better than the edited stuff. Just raw, unfiltered Peter Dinklage where the connection with the audience is so noticeable and for me that's an integral part of the speech.

Interesting part of this for me is that he was afraid to give this speech. Yet he, with the help of friends started.
Little by little he put in the time. Kept going. More and more. Didn't stop. No doubt made mistakes, made changes but kept going. Finally found a story he wanted to tell. Made it his own and and had a great time sharing for us all to enjoy and learn from.

Don't worry it will. Just pay attention to your inner voice. The one that tells you avoid this take that! Even though job 1 has more money & job 2 would be something you love.

I’m transferring into Bennington this semester, this speech helps me know I chose the right school. At my old school, finding the resources to do what I loved was an uphill battle. I had the drive, but no support. I’m so glad to be joining this little 750-student community that values collaboration and creativity above all else❤️

This is one of the funniest, and absolute best, speeches I have ever heard for a school.
Wish every depressed human being found his speech and truly listened through it. Mr. Dinklage is an inspiration and so wise. Don't let the world define you is something I will take to my heart and really try to think about when I walking through life feeling depressed and feeling like a failure.
Not only is he a fantastic actor, he's a captivating orator with very poignant things to say.

I have a question if you wouldn't mind answering... there is another video of this video out there and it's kind of weird it is as though there is a laugh track going on! And people are making comments as far as it not being funny and he's trying to be serious at times and people should not be laughing at everything he is says. It sounds as though everybody is laughing in this video at everything he is saying? Did they have a laugh track? Did they put sound effects into his video you were there. I didn’t finish any of my own music for 4 years, I didn’t finish any of my own apps for over 5 years... it’s so easy to think that life should go smooth when trying to do extraordinary things. This is my favourite of all the commencement speeches. I have listened to this at least 50 times by now. I put it on when I need calming down, or when I think nothing is ever going to work out. He is incredibly comforting. Thank you so much Peter Dinklage. A great credit to the school as well.

One of the best actors to ever grace my TV with his presence. This guy is a class act, funny, and has so much talent.
He has a great sense of humour and I respect the hell out of him. Mr Dinklage is a true inspiration to to the "Little People" throughout the world. I am always amazed at how much a person with a great sense of humour and wit can inspire others. it's an underappreciated life lesson that all humans should be taught at an early age.

Thank you for posting this. I'm at a point in my life that I am graduating after an entire life of school and am scared shitless about entering the real world. I'm so stressed out and looking for answers that people only say 'you'll be fine' which doesn't really help. This is good advice for anyone struggling to fulfill their dreams. Another video referred to this one, so I was lucky to find it again. I'd seen this a year or two ago, and it is just as awesome on a second viewing. Peter Dinklage rocks. -- My path in life is nothing much like I'd imagined it would be when I was a skinny freshman entering college for the first time. Life can throw things at you that you never expected, good and bad. You can make mistakes, good and bad, and try to do better. Life is very seldom easy or lucky. But you still need to work towards your dreams. You'll be happier that way, even if it isn't turning out the way you thought, or at least not yet. Along the way, life happens anyway. Friends come and go. You have to keep at it and pick yourself up many times, and find what works for you, and move ahead, onward, upward. I am still getting the hang of this thing called life. For most of us, it's still a struggle, but it's ours. There is a trick called attitude and turning things around, which I am still learning too. Best wishes to any graduates. Real life in the real world is not what you think it is as a new graduate. Figure it out and keep improving, and be good to others, even when they are not, if for no other reason than to confuse the heck out of the ones who are not nice or who actively want to make life worse for others in order to gain for themselves.

Great speech but I kinda wish the gigglers would shut up. This wasn't Stand Up on HBO night. He's lucky to have found his way at 29. Some don't get there until 40's or 50's. Some change direction several times. It's all a journey, nothing wrong with that. I think the worst thing a 20 something can do is to go out in the world thinking they've got it figured out. College isn't life. Too many are going out completely unprepared.

I love that he chose to talk about the reality that we are born and raised in a society that molds us into "permission seekers." We grow up with a dream, we are told we can be anything we want to be in life.....but it has to say so on this or that piece of paper we are given after college or whatever. Some people have never gone to school for what they love and can do it better than any graduate and yet they cant get a job because they dont have "permission". Western society has tunnel vision now. Our creativity and passion is shunned and our misery and struggle is applauded. Im sick of it.
