why does everyone translate DARES when he clearly says DANCES? Dances is used in the brooklyn vernacular to mean dare, but he says dances, not dares. People need popeye today to remind them they are allowed to protect themselves from criminals and ruffians. thanks for the song.
Actually, I think it's 'dasses', which also pretty much means 'dares'. This was from back in the '30's, remember, so the vernacular was pretty different.
