Agree. One of the great things about this show is how well acted it is. That obviously includes the main characters but even the one time characters seem to always be played by people who know the exact facial expressions and tones to make at the right moments.
It’s not just about the mic drop that Andy had about him being transferred, it was the fact that this young guy thought that he had the advantage. Andy was the kind of Cop that had been around for a while. He had favors and friends lined up; despite his prejudices and original character at the beginning of the series, he was a good cop and a well respected one. The guy thought he was working with an old timer counting his days till retirement. You never know who has a favor to use or a friend behind closed doors.
That is very true and words of wisdom. I've seen some great plays in my day where the person never saw it coming...because they had overlooked or completely underestimated an opponent. And a lot of times it involved the opponent having a friend with juice.
I don't see him as being prejudice. I see him as being tired of the stupid shit. Their racism. Like in the episode where he was trying to get information from a black who was prejudice / racist. He apologized for 300 years of slavery and then asked him to tell him the name of the friends whom he had brought over to the home so he could stop the asshole from doing it again. classic Sipowicz. czcams.com/video/P7bM8TbsVtI/video.html
I remember the scene where Lt Daniels was briefing Lt Rodriguez before he took over the squad and Daniels, who'd butted heads with Andy in the past pointed him out as one of the tough old-school cops in the squad but said something like "If someone I loved was murdered, I'd want him to be the one catching." Even the people who didn't like him very much had great respect for him as a cop.
One of THE most satisfying scenes ever filmed for TV or movies. Dennis Franz's character was so incredibly well and deeply developed, from gutter drunk to ideal policeman. From lying, cheating, hating misogynist to well respected, honorable man of integrity. He made EVERY word Andy Sipowicz ever said the absolute God's honest truth. To watch Andy chop that guy up into little pieces while he had no idea what was even happening to him was and is incredibly gratifying. Of course the scene required TWO excellent actors at work, cheers to Rolando Molina for being one of the nastiest nasty guys ever.
Maybe among the general public he's underrated (In spite of winning four emmys ) ; but make no mistake, his peers, his fellow actors and people in the business know how great he truly was.
Reminds me of the ending scene in "Blue Bloods" where Frank is talking to the leader of the Warrior Kings, already serving life. This scumbag ordered the murder of a 2 star chief and his wife. Turns out this chief did some boilerplate work with the DEA, making him a Federal Officer (whoops) "While we got no death penalty, the Feds do. Tonight you will be transferred to Federal Prison in Terra Haute, Indiana where you will stand trial for the murder of Donald Kent, a Federal cop"-Frank Reagan.

Franz was so good they basically rewrote the show for him. At the beginning, he was a corrupt, alcoholic screw-up. By the end, he was the most respected guy in the building.
Disagree. I think from the beginning of the series it was going to be his redemption story. I think they knew they were going to follow his story line to the end.
@@WhiskyHarpy Nah, see, actual facts don't back that. Initially, Kelly was the star of the show, and he was the main character. When David Caruso left the show (kinda suddenly), they had few options, so, they tried to bring in Jimmy Smits and make him the star.. that's when Dennis Franz started getting popular with people, and it kinda snowballed from there. They had to adjust Andy's story somewhat so he didn't look like a total scumbag next to Bobby Simone - Kelly put up with it for in-world reasons, Simone was new, and if Andy looked like trash next to him, the pairing wouldn't work. So, really, David Caruso leaving the show is the entire reason we ended up with Andy becoming the main character.
