      @@edhdeckbuilding I don't think people are saying that the set is above criticism. In the comments most people are against things like "i don't like the set because the theme is childish" or "the paws looks like they came from an un-set" or something like that (not this exact phrases, of course, i simplified). Yes, the theme is not very serious and is not dark, but liking it or not is a matter of preferences. If you don't like it is perfectly fine and you can obviously say that in your video, but a personal preference is not a "problem of the set". Broken mechanics, bad cards or something like that are problems of a set (of course you already knew that).
      So i think this is the main issue the commenters have: the criticism are mostly about the goofyness and less about the mechanics and such

    “Good cards if you are in that creature type but not if you’re not” - that’s actually good magic card design why are we complaining that these cards aren’t generic staples? I far rather stuff like this than the next dockside.
    The “bunny paw” mechanic is fine but it’s way too strong. The green card in particular.

    • @light-chemistry

      @@starmanda88 In casual it's absurdly strong. That's one less slot in my deck I have to care about interaction: it's a bane of progress stapled to a rishkar's expertise for no reason... why does my board wipe have to draw me a ton of cards too? At least decree of pain is 8 mana.
      The white one is really strong in a token deck too, because the tokens from the 1 paw mode enter individually, so you get potentially 5 triggers for stuff that cares about tokens entering. Virtually all older "create X tokens" spells create them simultaneously which only gives you one trigger.

    It is a little clunky, but the reason "Gift" is worded that way is because it _is not_ an additional cost, your chosen opponent "receives the gift" as an extra step in _resolving_ the spell, however there needs to be a step during the casting that determines whether you are choosing the psuedo-additional-cost mode. This enables WotC to print cards where the "kicker cost" of the spell is a benefit to your opponent instead of an additional cost to you, while removing the ability for your opponent to reap the benefit of you "paying the cost" and then denying you the spell by countering it.

    • @Jeffophone
      @Jeffophone Před měsícem +9

      I also just realized, the reason they say "if the gift was promised" is because the card doesn't care if your opponent *can't* draw the card or create the token (like if you have a Spirit of the Labyrinth and they've already drawn their card for turn). Other ways of wording it might imply that you don't get the additional effect if the gift gets "lost in the mail," so to speak.

    • @shirlot
      @shirlot Před měsícem

    Gift, funnily enough, is just kicker.
    My main issue with this set is that it's really a focal point for what's wrong with modern magic's release schedule, in that it's going to be here and gone in a week. This art style and approach to plane design is such a breath of fresh air from the garbage we had earlier in the year (and the year before that, and the year before that), and I really wish we'd get a three-set block structured here. Without 70,000 side-products releasing nigh-simultaneously to asphyxiate it.

      @@edhdeckbuilding Their main argument at first was for limited - that it was hard to design around large-small-small or large-large-small sets, so they'd move to two-large-blocks. Which gave us BFZ-OGW, one of the worst limited formats ever. Now their line is that "if we spend two sets on one plane, that's really a bummer for people who don't like that plane."
      My guess is that these are just convenient excuses to cover up phoning in planes (New Capenna) and the fact that limited formats follow a same-y checklist these days, given the designers have to churn out so much more junk annually.

    The "promise" thing is for rules purpose, i think. The "gift" is given on resolution, but you choose to give it or not when you cast the spell. So when you cast the spell you "promise the gift". If they have worded the ability to give the gift on casting then it would have been a triggered ability... Or something like that...

    • @TheOtherDoughnut
      @TheOtherDoughnut Před měsícem +1

      If the gift was given on cast the person you gave the gift to gets it even if your spell is countered. It’s a big feels bad moment if you cast the extra turn one let’s say and the opp you have the turn to counters your spell. You’ve just paid for an extra turn for the guy popping off and you get nothing for it.

    I think the promise wording for the gift mechanic is specifically for the fact that you need to declare if the gift will be given first, then see if the spell resolves before effects take place.
    If they worded it like "if the gift was given," it would imply that the gift would still be given even if the spell doesn't resolve (which in it's current rules, the gifts are only given if the spell resolves).

    For the Cephalids and Viashino, I think the change was because those types hadn't been supported in a long time and they wanted them to interact with more (albeit not very many more) recently printed cards. It definitely does seem weird when they're adding new creature types with sets like tiefling and warlock.
    I actually think they should introduce more "categories" of creature type. Like how Assassins, Mercenaries, Pirates, Rogues, and Warlocks all fall under the term "Outlaws." I think groupings like that could open a lot of options for deckbuilding and interaction. So for instance you could group Squirrel, Insect, Rat, etc. into a group called "Vermin" or something.

    The terrible wording for gift and promise is because you are making this choise as you cast it so it effects if your opponent chooses to counter it or not, as opposed to choosing when the spell resolves.
    Now a way to reword not as terribly would be "as an aditionoal cost to casting this spell you may choose to ~ as the spell resolves" and "if the aditional cost was paid"
    Now the terrible wording actualyl appears to he reducing the number of words on the card and giving the new mechanic a themetic name that just doesnt belong in a competitive game.

    What gets me is that year after year they keep adding more and more distinct animal-based creature types like Skunk, Badger, etc. It makes me wonder what they're going to do with the Beast creature type since its a general catch-all typing for animal. But its not that easy to just remove Beast because we have creatures like Baloths who are creatures unique to the game. Will they be errata'd to have the Baloth creature type instead? There are more than Baloths that have the Beast creature type, too. This is starting to become a headache to think about. Not to mention you have cards like Tawnos who specifically care about Beasts and Birds.

    Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I know I’m free to just not watch whatever content bothers me, but something I’ve noticed recently that’s started to bug me about these videos is that it feels like Demo is being willfully ignorant about things. Outside of all of the points people are making in the comments about the wording around the “gift” mechanic, even something that’s listed as a positive like the inclusion of Threshold is met with frustration. “Weird that they brought it back in this set.” The smallest bit of digging would show that Threshold is the archetype for blue/black in the set, so there is, in fact, a mill/surveil/graveyard theme. For me, opinions need to be rooted in facts, so if you ignore basic things like this and then form a negative opinion about it because you are unaware, that feels like a disservice.

    • @edhdeckbuilding
      @edhdeckbuilding  Před měsícem

      i wouldn't exactly call that the theme of blue and black in this set. out of 130 blue and black cards only 10 are surveil. there are only 5 mill cards in this set and 2 of them are green. so i find you are the one being willfully ignorant. there are other sets with WAY more milling and surveil that they did not have threshold and absolutely no one would refer to this set as a graveyard set. i indeed think it is weird that they brought it back in this set. your comment is also weird.

    The main thing that bothers me about paw points (as I'm calling them) is that it just feels like it didn't actually need to exist or have a special symbol for the mechanic to work...they could have just used numbers. 😕 So that kinda just sucks because it feels like they wasted a neat new symbol on something that could have easily been covered without it. Especially since they don't accumulate or stick around to be used for anything else like mana, energy or anything else they gave a symbol to.

    • @guico33
      @guico33 Před měsícem

      Tbh if you think about it you do need to find a way to properly template and display it using numbers too. I'm not a fan of the paws but I must admit it's a fairly clever choice here. It's legible, doesn't feel to technical, and can easily be replaced with other sumbols in future sets.

    I disagree with your gripes in general (though that's your opinion and opinions are fair), but I do have one of my own. For a set that's so tribal focused, most of the tribe's commanders barely care about the tribe at all, and are often better off playing things that work with the generic ability and ignoring the tribe (example is the bat commander having a good recursion effect and a garbage bat payoff)

    The aesthetic is very whimsical, but the aesthetics are great, the art is great, and the mechanical design is great. I’d take this set over any of the last ten regular sets. Outlaws of Thunder Junction and Murders at Karlov Manor are garbage in all those respects compared to Bloomburrow.

  • @goldenson4566
    @goldenson4566 Před měsícem

    It’s insane to me that people are so insistent on complaining about bunny paws for modal spells (effectively just retooled versions of the command spells) and Gifting (kicker) when this set also introduced another mechanic that is infinitely more “childish”. As in literally adding babies to magic. But because people are so sold on the concept of Offspring as a mechanic (another effect that is just Kicker), people ignore that literal babies have been added to magic because they are more inclined to complain about celery and silly art (which is almost evocative of really old Magic art as well). I’m fine with Offspring as a mechanic and idea, even if I find the flavor to be rather unhinged and something that will likely struggle to see reprints, but it does just go to show that people have double standards between what they will let slide in terms of new ideas.

    It's a new plane of existence that’s meant to be whimsical, which is a style that mtg hasn't touched on. I prefer this over butchering existing planes like MKM, or just copy/pasting tropes like OTJ and the upcoming Duskmourn sets

    • @guyatanosavia8487
      @guyatanosavia8487 Před měsícem +2

      @edhdeckbuilding That's not what my comment was saying :/
      It feels unnecessary to criticize the *theme* of a set that has actual story behind it, and doesn't just exist for the sake of a trope: particularly when it's surrounded by... well, Cowboys with no (real) story, Detective Noir that bastardizes Ravnica for the sake of fan service sales, or many of the UB sets that just plainly aren't even in the realm of fantasy (Doctor Who, for instance).
      I get the point about the "bunny paws", but at the same time, it's such a small and innocuous thing to actively go out of your way to criticize. However like other people have brought up, the Gift mechanic is worded that way because it's the only way the designers could word the mechanic to allow it to work the way that it does. Gifting won't work if it's countered which dodges "extra cost" effects like Kicker, it will work if the spell resolves and the opponent is somehow denied the gift anyways (not being allowed to draw a card and then being lifted a card, for example), etc... I don't really see a problem with creating new phrasing for actually interesting mechanics, as long as those mechanics feel fresh. I understand not everyone feels that way, but to actively mock it? It comes off as jaded.
      Also, is there a reason you respond to people so passive aggressively in your comments? I didn't lambast you, I'm here to (potentially) have a genuine discussion with a creator that I actually enjoy/am inspired by and usually agree with on various points, not to have him stomp on my mood because he didn't like what I said

    i will be honestly i like this style of talking about cards instead of the old way you need less videos and you just do the ones that only get your attention
    and i have a theory with the paw print symbols this is likely a deciduous experiment so they can make Confluence cards more often so they are less broken kind of like with phase out effects instead of flicker effects so they don't get Enters effects. so your restricted to what you can pick for mutiple effects
    and heres the important note on the twenty toed toad and you missed this is that it doesn't say +1/+1 counters for the win con so you can be any counters on it, like for example you can just transfer the counters from "The Millennium Calendar" with a card like "Goldberry, River-Daughter" or "Resourceful Defense" onto the frog then you just wins. Also the 20 cards part with cards like "Rhystic study" and other obnoxious card advantage cards you can do that half even easier.
    and i agree about the "Gift a extra turn" card that one will probably be eligible for your underrated cards series down the line because your typically 97% safe during that extra turn the typically way to go horribly wrong is if they win on that turn or they have any of the loopholes to nail a protected player. the reason it will be ignored is due to the cost to cast it (and plus if you know someone is going to die from a craterhoof you just gift it to one of the players thats about to be taken down.) (fun fact is i goofed big time and almost won with this trick with protection if i remembered to make more polyraptors before i phased out i would have won since i drew a waking sun avatar to wrath the board and all the raptors could have attacked and was enough for lethal.)
