  • I've had a koi pond in my yard for 15 years, and I thought it was time to share the details of how I set it up, and how I maintain it.
There are some unique challenges to keeping your koi alive in area of the world where the cold winter is very long... hopefully this series of videos will be helpful and encourage you to try your own koi pond!
Filter Note: Unfortunately the Power-Flo Max filter featured in the video has been discontinued by Laguna. By searching "pond filter" on Amazon, you'll see some good alternatives. Please put your pond filter recommendations in the comments!

I have 4 large Laguna pressure flo filters for 5 Large koi. I've never cleaned my filters in years. However I do vacuum my small pond daily; takes 5 minutes.

Had a Koi pond for many years (also in Alberta - but the south). Unfortunately closed it down - at a certain "age", a large pond becomes difficult.

Can you give us more info on what filter that is? Trying to find one with all those components and UV, if possible.

Hello Nicole. That's the Laguna PowerFlo Max filter, unfortunately it was discontinued by Laguna some time ago. Too bad 😟it's a great filter. UV was never an option for that style of filter, so I have a UV clarifier that is outside of the pond, it works inline with the hose that runs from the pond to the head of my stream.

Do you ever cover your pond with a sheet of Styrofoam in the winter?

That's a very interesting idea! I have not done that... the one thing I would be concerned about is cutting off all the sunlight, but I would think there should be a way around that, such as a small plastic window in the styrofoam. Koi and sunlight are a strange thing, too much in summer is not good for them, but complete darkness would likely be unhealthy as well, it would likely mess with their natural day/night cycle.
