How Cell Towers Work: Hands-On!

  • Fun fact: when I was selling mobile phones back in 2004, I would spend the store's slow days taking online training courses reserved for my employer's engineers, fascinated by the networks that made mobile phones work. Twelve years (and a change of career) later, my network curiosity still burned strong. So I asked AT&T to let me go hands-on with a cell site - and to my great surprise, the carrier said yes!
Come along as I scope out not one, but two cell sites: one hidden in the steeple of a church, the other perched high atop the tallest mountain in the Northeast. In the process we'll learn about RF energy, what happens when the power goes out, and why the term "tower" isn't always accurate.

    [ABOUT THIS VIDEO]
MrMobile's Tower Tour was produced based on a pitch by MrMobile to AT&T in the Spring of 2016. To make this video possible, AT&T provided access to two cell sites and several network engineering personnel. AT&T also reviewed MrMobile's final script for technical accuracy, but no editorial changes were made as a result of the company's input. Travel expenses were entirely paid by MrMobile/Mobile Nations, and there was no consideration paid to MrMobile by AT&T for the production of this video.

As a current AT&T employee I am still amazed that this stuff works at all. I worked for 10 years directly on the network first as a cable splicer then as a Central Office technician and I can attest to the huge amount of work it takes to keep a network this size operational. Most people have no idea what it takes. It may as well be magic as far as most people are concerned. This was a great little video. Keep up the good work.

I'm just curious, if you wouldn't mind, what would be the job title of what you do? I've looked at the AT&T careers page and have never seen anything like that, at least in my area. I live outside of Sacramento, CA in a town of 66k people. I see AT&T trucks and vans all the time in my town, but I've never seen a job opening for a technician who installs the service or someone who works on the equipment.
I really appreciate any help. Thanks.

As other users have stated, it would be great to see you cover mobile device manufacturing and how components work, among other more enthusiast-focused topics. I would personally love for the Mr. Mobile channel to evolve into something more expansive than just reviews, which I think unnecessarily limit the amount of personality you're able to bring to the table. A lot of the audience enjoy watching the channel specifically because we like the way Michael Fisher engages with the topic of mobile tech. A series of "Mr. Mobile field trips" would be very engaging for all of us who aren't actually purchasing anything right now, but enjoy watching the channel's content all the same.

It's sadly not a superstition my friend, I've found many sources of high emf from the pain on my body. Once the body's reached a certain level of exposure, it often manifests in really bad symptoms. Over 200 scientists (not pseudoscientists) have called for safety standards regarding emf to be strengthened, and for white zones to be established and upheld. At the moment people are condemned to live in pain because the wireless industry have been dishonest about the risks and have got people like you fully addicted to the technology. Oh and before anyone has a cheeky dig at how I'm commenting here, it's through a wired internet connection on my computer. No wifi. I turn on my mobile phone around once a month. www.emfscientist.org/index.php/emf-scientist-appeal

Poor people are just getting LTE this year, meanwhile at&t has announced the rollout of 5G later this year as well. Great video as usual!

  • @ronaldckrausejr7762

at&t must not have "relayed" the correct information.
I know of countless places where at&t does NOT have lte; not does any other carrier.
Countless places throughout rural regions of: West Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, North Dakota, etc...
The worst offender would be West Virginia. Please feel welcome to check ANY mobile device coverage map; then recheck them for accuracy and real world data. Over one third of West Virginia does not even have 4g cell phone coverage of any kind. But it gets worse... Want high speed internet? If so, that would be a real issue in getting it to almost one half of the entire state. Some counties being so rural, that it is only offered in two or three (not a typo) locations per county

Great vid, as usual, Michael. I've often wondered about the tech behind cell phones and how they work. But most remarkable thing to me was that steam locomotive and the way it was designed to stay level; that thing is awesome, LOL! I want to take that ride!

Awesome video! I love the basics of how the cellular tower works and it’s locations! I love studying cellular technology and it’s history. Like GSM used in late 90’s to replace TDMA and AMPS that was used in early cellular network days. Then CDMA as new standard in 2000’s when GTE transformed into Verzion. Microwave back haul is better for rough terrains and bad weather to transmit data by high frequency like 2.5ghz. I love it! I would love see more of future videos
