    Sir what about the grammatically of the sentence when we take the whole NP as indexation. In previous lecture we learnt that whole NP"Mary's mother " couldn't be used as antecedent to the "anaphora" herself.

    I see how this works in a very elegant way. But the explanation for why herself cannot refer back to Mary's seems to be that a reflexive pronoun or anaphora can only refer to the whole subject and since Mary's is only a subpart of the subject it cannot satisfy this restriction. Why would one create a theory to schematize the rule in this abstract way?
