    I’ve always rushed the start and when explaining it to clients. I will be using this video for those interested in it. Good job.

    I have always reinforced my dog for offering me eye contact, and it is now something she naturally does. I have started introducing the bucket game to her, but she is hyper focused on me. Where should I be looking at? Should my eyes be pointing at the bucket?

    • @TrainWithAndiD
      @TrainWithAndiD  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes that can be difficult for some dogs if eye contact has been heavily reinforced. But it is possible as the Springer in later videos had a huge reinforcement history for looking at me, but soon learnt this was a different game. Have a look at Step 2 which goes into teaching focus. Good luck x

      Sorry no I didn’t as I had to increase my hours at work and so haven’t had the time. I do have all the footage though so must get around to doing it!! Thanks for taking the time to comment.

      Please do. Video editing is hard but this would be valuable to many.

    Thanks for this series of videos. I've watched them, and Chirag's introduction and other materials, yet I'm still unsure as to what the point of the bucket game is, outside of vet appointments and grooming, etc. How is its general purpose (or effect) different from other self-restraint training games using food? Or is it the same? Thank you.

      It’s just another type of cooperative care consent and works in the same way as a chin rest for example x

      We use it in our shelter only for dogs who come in with unknown histories but are wary about being touched or harnessed.

    Surely it's better to teach the dog it needs to focus on one thing, the handler or the bucket consistently and not reward when the dog does either? So far as I can see it might be confusing for a dog to be able to focus on either one to get the reward. I would be telling my clients that they should choose one or the other. Personally, I always prefer focus on the human. Also, I am not sure this is any better than teaching a chin rest or laying on your side. If you use this, you have to take the bucket to the vet with you etc. With the chin rest, or laying on the side, all you need is the treats. I really like Chirag and his methods but I think this is just a little gimmicky and is one exercise we don't really need.

      Focusing on the dog or handler is only in the teaching phase, when gradually building criteria and not expecting too much too soon, which can cause frustration in some dogs. Though a lot of dogs offer looking at the bucket really quickly, so I take it. It’s not a one size fits all, just an example of how this exercise can be broken down and taught in stages. Focusing on you wouldn’t work for this game as you need to move around the dog in order to examine, groom and treat them. So maintaining eye contact would be counter productive. With regard to the chin rest etc yes you can use those techniques instead. The bucket game is just another version of cooperative care, everyone has their favourites and lots of people including myself use multiple methods. I’ve used this over the years for a large number of dogs with brilliant results when coaching a variety of people and dogs, so it is one of my personal favourites. But there are those that chose not to use it which is fine. It’s brilliant that we have so many consent techniques in husbandry 😊 Once taught you can use this technique with any container, bag of food, or food directly on the floor/on a surface and it works exactly the same 🐾

    Is there a way to share this or its link please?

      Yes you can click on the arrow that says ‘share’ and then select whichever option works best for you. I often use the ‘copy link’ and then I paste it into an email x
