Good LORD look at that bed. 🎉 You made it look like filling, planting, leveling, and covering a bed isn’t backbreaking, cursing at the sky, contemplating life choices kind of work. Congratulations, Jacques! 🎉😂
Yeah, my raised bed is on the way this week. I'm prepping by soaking a bunch of sticks and logs in water for 3 days so that they're already soaked before putting them in. I'm also going to put some chicken manure in with the sticks to get that carbon/nitrogen breakdown started. Just some experimental ideas 👨🏽🌾
@@meshab6049 yep that's where mine came from (I'm in ATX). Free mulch and hugelkultur materials everywhere. I just wish I had a truck and a chipper to collect and process from neighbors curbs.
@@StillOnTrack I tried to get some extras but the city hurried up and dispatched workers to clean up the biggest messes. I can still collect some sticks from a few areas
Hey, great tip I came across when it comes to mulching. Go ahead and put your straw down first before planting!! It's super easy to push out of the way to dig down. Seems easier than trying to mulch all around each baby plant ✌️
If I'm starting out completely new...and have no potting mix... can I use some garden soil in the bottom? ( on a tight budget) could I add some peat to it to make it lighter? And then add the new bags of potting mix on top? Or is that a bad idea?
You can for sure add some to the bottom as long as it isn't too clay rich and dense then it might not be ideal but a few inches wouldn't hurt. The cheapest way to fill a raised bed is to buy soil in bulk from a nursery but then you have to transport it. You could also add some branches and leaves but it will eventually settle and then you will need more bagged soil anyway.
I love on an acre of land that’s mostly hard cracked red clay… can’t plant anything in it but not the spots that are a little more loose with soil mixed in and the sides of the yard we put mulch and planted tree and down mow are just teaming with plants and trees!
Perfect set up. As a long term gardener I got to say...theres nothing wrong with hay. However, if you use tree bark mulch, it bring even more biology and adds a perfect touch to the soil later. Also, I added rabbits to my homestead. My garden has never been the same. The fertilizer is cold so you can go straight to the garden and the proof is in the pudding. I'm happy to see the right way though. Good job.
I really like straw because worms go crazy for it and it breaks down rapidly feeding carbon back into my soil. I also like that I don't have to worry about robbing nitrogen if I bury some by accident. But the bark mulch looks really nice and probably supports different life that is beneficial as well.
Your videos are awesome I really want to use it as reference to grow on my own. I live in texas and it gets HOT last year I had so many plants black spot from direct heat. I want to be as self sustainable as possible for my family.
Yeah I think I'm gonna put some t-posts around my raised beds to prop up some 40ish % shade cloth to help in the hottest parts of the Texas summer this time.
How did you get your trim set on the L-shaped bed? I had no problems with my circle beds, but I found it impossible to get it to stay on those tight corners.
It’s much cheaper and helps the soil if you fill the bottom let’s say half with sticks, leaves, yard brush etc and then fill with soil ontop! As this breaks down and decomposes it’ll add nutrients and nitrogen into the soil. If you were to do just dirt its extremely expensive.
Rock dust??? Does this go by another name. I haven't seen or heard this for soil amendments. Is he meaning diacotemus earth, used for organic pest control?? Any help, as his garden is amazing.
It has gone by other branded names like Azomite or glacial dust is I think another one. They take rock, usually volcanic, and then crush it up into a fine powder. This allows you to spread it and add minerals back to your soil or in the case of potting mix it has no mineral component so this helps add it back in. Overall it has lots of micro nutrients and in theory should make things more nutritious if you are lacking a specific element that it is adding.
10000% I recommend bulk soil, just go check it out first and make sure you like the feel and appearance of it. Since this was just 1 bed I decided to fill it the expensive way with bagged soil. When I install the rest of my raised bed garden I will totally order soil in bulk. For the price of 2 bags of soil you can get 6-7x the amount as bulk soil!
This was Tomato Tone which is an organic fertilizer from Espoma, most organic fertilizers (including this one) tend to be slow release because they are ingredients rather than the primary nutrient. ie rock phosphate has to break down to supply the phosphate it isn't just immediately available.
Its GardenStraw and we sell it on the Epic Gardening store. It is pricy but great for containers and raised beds since it is pre chopped and easier to spread around. Link -> growepic.co/3y9u02X

Don't just throw random minerals in the box just because "The plants could use them" actually test your soil and find out what it's missing for the plants you wanted to grow.

Can we start a petition to rename this channel "Muscles in the Garden"?
That was impressive!!!😊 always so humble - hiding all that muscle for so long 😂

Why?
Right !!!! I noticed that too 🧐🤣
Signed! Lol
0:20 Dwayne The Rock Johnson hasn’t left the gym ever since this video was posted 👀👀
Rock dust??
Them guns when you were showing the seedlings!
I came here to mention the guns too! Super 🔥 and great balance to the brains.
I LOVE HOW INFORMATIVE YOUR VIDEOS ARE BUT GODDAMN JACQUES YOU NEED TO DO MORE CONTENT WITH SHORT SLEEVE SHIRTS
😂
Look at those guns XD

Who knew I'd be sat in bed watching a gardening channel absolutely so excited to see whats next. Hmm how my life has changed (for the better)
Where can I find that straw mulch?
I like part native soil in my raised beds, because my native soil holds water really well. Potting or garden mix alone requires a lot more water.
Hi, I love your garden ideas
I’m picking up my raised bed today. Can’t wait to get the season started 🙌🏻
You should fill the bottom of the bed with leaves and/or sticks and wood, it really adds to the health of your soil and helps water retention!

Have you seen Hügelkultur? Worth a look. You can have a longer lasting with materials that need more time to breakdown. 👍🏽

For beds this high I would add wood, leaves and foodscraps to the bottom!

Do the bottom half of volume with wood logs and branches. Much cheaper and over time you get a better soil
What are your thoughts on hugal cultures in raised beds?
Love all the epic channels, thanks for the amazing and informative content...
Thanks for the great info.
Fantastic videos!
I’m proud of u too! Ty
Must rename the channel to "Jacked in the Garden." 😂
Hey Jacque great video however what are your 'minerals' (besides the Rock dust) that you add to the soil? Thx
Do you happen to remember where you go your bird of paradise from?
I like to put 3-4" of gravel ot sand on the bottom for drainage.
How did you get the container.....any diy stuff ???
Another layer of potting soil goes over the compost layer? Thank you
What kind of mulch did you use ?
Link the the straw/hay? My local places always have seeds in them
Where did you get the straw? I haven’t seen that in San Diego.
What about snakes, it made a home in my flower pot
Does cats poop on your brand new garden bed ?
Atter when you put your mulch down? Is it better to put it on before or after you plant? Or does it matter?
should I also put hay on top of my tomatoe bed? or would that be counter productive?
What do you do with the soil that was in the garden bed from the previous season?
Let’s gooooooooo
What do you do with all of the thins you harvest.
Where’s that garden straw/hay?

Why not a hugel instead of all that soil?
what kind of mulch is that rice hulls or straw
🙌🏿
How true is it that raised bed soil dries out faster?
Bed dimensions??😊
whats that corrugated container system you use, called.. not seen that before, looks appealing to set up
They are called Birdies Beds and are really great since they last much much longer than wooden bed, here is the link: growepic.co/41E2lVz
