Coming back to this scene after completing the game, I can certainly appreciate the foreshadowing going on like how Cognitive Sumire says "It's my fault" and the words uttered by Cendrillion during Kasumi's awakening.
The whole awakening speech fits really well for the foreshadowing as well. (spoilers) "Rather than accept a life in cinders You'd strive towards splendor-- You know the risk. If those truly are the shoes you've chosen, I am thou, thou art I Accept this contract... The spell cast upon you..." Sumire has chosen to leave what she considers to be her previous pathetic life, where she believed Kasumi's death was her fault and that she could never escape that. Carrying on Kasumi's dream was the only thing she could do, but in return, Sumire would have to be the one who dies. If she's certain this is what she wants, then she must accept the contract, and the spell that she was under, which is very obvious, in retrospect, about Maruki's actualization.

It's because they're actually struggling to confront the reality of their pain. Kasumi is using a flimsy excuse and isn't actually confronting her real issue. The awakening is so fake that she throws it off like it is sitting on her face rather ran stuck to it. It wasn't even a quick bandaid pull like Yusuke, it was just throwing it away.
Coming back and watching this again after finishing the game, and once again, I'm amazed at subtle hints dropped for future story elements! This game was fantastic!
This is probably one of Royals best additions. I am not talking about the awakening but the entering of this palace. The player is getting in randomly without knowing who rules this place. When I first saw it in the JP version I was speculating and analysed it. The white aesthetic representing perfection, the pigeons representing peace, the cameras indicating control as well as the walls with scientific notes. All indicating to a place of peace controlled by someone higher. I was shocked that I was right with this place leading to paradise. Definitely a great choice to introduce this place without being the next target.
There's something cool about the fact that it's only Joker and Morgana for this sneak peak too. It helps build the idea that these two are partners and no matter what Joker will always have Morgana there if there's trouble. Plus they don't really get a chance to work off each other alone for Palaces even when he's your only party member Ryuji's still around in cutscenes.
I knew right away as soon as they introduced the Palace Ruler that was gonna be the case. I've played way too much Persona to know the typical plot twists with certain character tropes.
I think expectations come into play as well. Up until now, The game has been very similar to Vanilla P5, plot wise. I was under the impression that Royal content was only gonna be after Yaldaboth. This was before Sae's palace and i was not expecting this at all. This broke my expectations of thinking Royal plot was Only at end game as well. Plus you Also mentioned how not only did this scene fill me with dread because of how unexpected it was, you feel unprepared just going into it because its just you and Morgana and no one else. Such a good scene
With how mysterious Kasumi is, it’s bizarre to see her with “a” nav. The persona awakening looks so elegant, but I somehow get a strange case if there’s gotta be more to her..... Maybe it’s just my imagination.
Holy shit, I keep coming back to certain scenes after beating the game and keep finding more foreshadowing to later parts. Listen to Kasumi and the two people talking right before the cutscene with the nav starting up. All three of the keywords (palace owner, what they think the palace is, and what it actually is in reality) are used, and as soon as she says “stadium”, her nav activates. Really smooth transition, and a nice Easter egg for people in their new game +.
The only thing I can say I “dislike” about this game is the fact that Kasumi hardly had a presence in the ending. I was able to get everyone else’s confidant item and say goodbye to them, but Kasumi wasn’t in Kichijoji
Yeah I really wished I could’ve seen her in Kichijoji too, but I can understand why she wasn’t there. I mean, she was at training camp at that time after all (considering she was just getting off the train as MC was departing) and considering that comforting send off she gave Joker, I think I can forgive her not being in Kichijoji
I definitely understand it, and it makes sense, but I was just sad because I romanced her in my first playthrough, and it seemed to me like she is the closest to being the "canon" love interest.
Hmm... For this scene, I still don't know how to feel regarding Kasumi's awakening in English... I like some parts of it and yet, there are parts where I'm a bit mixed... There are parts where she sounded a bit too old for a 15 year old... Or is it just me being used to the Japanese one? I need to hear her later performance to make up my mind.
I found her gasps and screams too loud (and weird) during her awakening imo. Overall I'd say I like her Eng voice better than her Japanese one (too high pitched)
Especially the lines where he A) is supposed to be agitated that she's too slow in realizing he's a cat (hence the cut-in) and B) where he's supposed to sound disappointed that she doesn't join them (hence his sad portrait). I haven't heard everything yet but Mona's new lines (in delivery) are just the worst. I don't know what happened with the VA but his new monotone lines clash with his old more emotional/high energy ones.

I don’t remember if Joker had to find them later on or not so how did she find them and what are they?

In the third semester she's also the one who opens the way to the palace because she was the one who opened it the first time as seen here. Also, I think the Shadow is so weak due to fact that they wanted you to fully utilize Kasumi and catch a little glimpse of what kind of enemies you'll encounter (not in power but just in general). Just my take.
SPOILERS I never really noticed that it was a cognitive Sumire who dies at the beginning. Mostly because I didn't know Sumire existed at the time. But I feel like this happens because to Maruki, Sumire is dead. The girl we know is Kasumi after all. So that's why she is killed by a shadow right away. I know this is probably obvious shit that everyone knows. but I just figured that out recently.

3RD SEMESTER SPOILERS: i like how it’s actually possible to figure out who’s palace it is before it is revealed, as Sumire says “I do nothing but cause trouble for Yourname-Senpai, and even *Dr. Maruki* ” then as the couple walk past and call it a Lab, she responds with “it’s not a *Lab* , it’s a *Stadium* “ after the cutscene i checked the log and noticed that, i was 99.9% sure it was Marukis palace after that
You’re brighter than I was. I was speculating that it was his palace because of the direction his confidant took and some of the interesting dialogue he had throughout the game. I loved that final boss though, much more emotionally satisfying than Yaldabaoth

Spoilers I like how this entire thing is foreshadowing without it being a huge clue that something wasn't right on your playthrough up until the third semester. Her persona's entire speech tells us straight up what happened. The spell cast on her was when Maruki made her believe she was Kasumi. And Sumire consistently chose to believe it all when confronted with clues she wasn't. And her awakening, unlike the others, wasn't a rebellion against the distorted reality, it was a rebellion against actual reality. Everyone else got a costume that fit their rebellious self. Sumire did too, but hers was different in that it was a transformation sequence ala "Magical Girl" which is basically donning a costume to be someone else. They did a good job here, imo.
Don’t get me wrong, I want to like Kasumi, I really do - its just that unless something changes in the New Content, her writing just screams “Shitty Self Insert”. It might just be because she’s had the Haru Problem of incredibly little actual screentime, so again, I’ll see if I’m proven wrong once I’m past the Base Story (came here solely because I accidentally skipped the Awakening Scene, and it was bothering me)
Coming back after playing through the New Content - I’ll admit that Kasumi gets a LOT better, but I’ll stand by saying some of her earlier interactions seem rather shoehorned in
1:00 Starting from here most just don't realize that Sumire and the guy with his girlfriend walking just activated the Nav with the right key words. "Dr. Maruki" "Stadium" and the distortion is "Research lab". I love how my friend picks up on this when she got to this scene first and I just laughed awkwardly when she said that and it was Dr. Maruki's palace.
3rd semester spoilers: At first I was disappointed at the lack of blood in her awakening, but now after her true awakening in 3rd semester I love how clever it was to have a little thing like that absent since she wasn't truly revealing her true self like the rest of the phantom thieves (save for futaba whose shadow transformed into her persona and haru whose awakening happened partially offscreen)
Bryce manages to sneak his way in this game a handful of times... he was a “pompous customer” at Leblanc once, and well... no spoilers, but he comes in future times too, as a interesting character

Palaces, in and of themselves, are not necessarily proof of misconduct, only distorted desires. Lots of people have Palaces, but the Phantoms make a point of trying to only target those whose distorted desires are bringing about misfortune, and there's no proof of that here per se.
As much as I love Yoshizawa, everytime I think about this scene, I just think about how cool it would be if she was a female protagonist. I'd love to play a persona game where the awakening for my character looked like a magical girl transformation.
Here's something I noticed, after I beat persona 5 royal and came back to this video. Before she awakens she says "I won't tolerate anyone speaking ill of our dream." OUR dream, you usually say our with two or more people and I could be really much looking into this alot, because this is just a line that probably not that important, but I think at that moment she saw herself more as who she actually is Sumire. During Third Semester you'll hear Sumire talk about how Kasumi said that her and Sumire were going be stars together and do everything twins/siblings do together, whenever famous (I say twins cause there's no way in hell they aren't twins, but also put siblings so people don't get mad) so she remembers those words and screams it at the Shadow then magical girl awakening!! So Maruki's brainwashing is very very very 'helpful' for Sumire, but also she does remember she's not really Kasumi and she's just her younger sister. One of the playable characters was going to have Hifumi's design but Hifumi as she is in game was the designers salvaging her design for a confidant rather than just not using it after they scrapped the playable character.

i like how it’s actually possible to figure out who’s palace it is before it is revealed, as Sumire says “I do nothing but cause trouble for Yourname-Senpai, and even *Dr. Maruki* ” then as the couple walk past and call it a Lab, she responds with “it’s not a *Lab* , it’s a *Stadium* “
after the cutscene i checked the log and noticed that, i was 99.9% sure it was Marukis palace after that
You’re brighter than I was. I was speculating that it was his palace because of the direction his confidant took and some of the interesting dialogue he had throughout the game. I loved that final boss though, much more emotionally satisfying than Yaldabaoth

I like how this entire thing is foreshadowing without it being a huge clue that something wasn't right on your playthrough up until the third semester.
Her persona's entire speech tells us straight up what happened. The spell cast on her was when Maruki made her believe she was Kasumi. And Sumire consistently chose to believe it all when confronted with clues she wasn't. And her awakening, unlike the others, wasn't a rebellion against the distorted reality, it was a rebellion against actual reality. Everyone else got a costume that fit their rebellious self. Sumire did too, but hers was different in that it was a transformation sequence ala "Magical Girl" which is basically donning a costume to be someone else.
They did a good job here, imo.
Don't forget when she rips the mask off their is no blood because isn't the true self she's unleashing

Don’t get me wrong, I want to like Kasumi, I really do - its just that unless something changes in the New Content, her writing just screams “Shitty Self Insert”.
It might just be because she’s had the Haru Problem of incredibly little actual screentime, so again, I’ll see if I’m proven wrong once I’m past the Base Story (came here solely because I accidentally skipped the Awakening Scene, and it was bothering me)
She actually feels a lot more a part of the phantom thieves more than haru once you get closer to the end
She just feels so forced, her writing is just annoying

Coming back after playing through the New Content - I’ll admit that Kasumi gets a LOT better, but I’ll stand by saying some of her earlier interactions seem rather shoehorned in
1:00 Starting from here most just don't realize that Sumire and the guy with his girlfriend walking just activated the Nav with the right key words. "Dr. Maruki" "Stadium" and the distortion is "Research lab".
I love how my friend picks up on this when she got to this scene first and I just laughed awkwardly when she said that and it was Dr. Maruki's palace.
3rd semester spoilers:
At first I was disappointed at the lack of blood in her awakening, but now after her true awakening in 3rd semester I love how clever it was to have a little thing like that absent since she wasn't truly revealing her true self like the rest of the phantom thieves (save for futaba whose shadow transformed into her persona and haru whose awakening happened partially offscreen)

Kasumi embraces her shadow. She knows her lies and her truths and accepts them. If she didn't, we would have a persona 4 boss, battling her shadow. Kasumi and Akechi accepted themselves. The p4 victims denied them in the beginning

Palaces, in and of themselves, are not necessarily proof of misconduct, only distorted desires. Lots of people have Palaces, but the Phantoms make a point of trying to only target those whose distorted desires are bringing about misfortune, and there's no proof of that here per se.

Here's something I noticed, after I beat persona 5 royal and came back to this video.
Before she awakens she says "I won't tolerate anyone speaking ill of our dream." OUR dream, you usually say our with two or more people and I could be really much looking into this alot, because this is just a line that probably not that important, but I think at that moment she saw herself more as who she actually is Sumire. During Third Semester you'll hear Sumire talk about how Kasumi said that her and Sumire were going be stars together and do everything twins/siblings do together, whenever famous (I say twins cause there's no way in hell they aren't twins, but also put siblings so people don't get mad) so she remembers those words and screams it at the Shadow then magical girl awakening!! So Maruki's brainwashing is very very very 'helpful' for Sumire, but also she does remember she's not really Kasumi and she's just her younger sister.

how they gonna tell me that Hifumi (chess girl) was original going to be a playable character/member, then decided to just make her a confidant....then years later release this version with Kasumi >.>
One of the playable characters was going to have Hifumi's design but Hifumi as she is in game was the designers salvaging her design for a confidant rather than just not using it after they scrapped the playable character.
Now that escalated quickly...
