  • This is one of the cameras that started the mirrorless movement. Its the first MFT from Olympus and the third MFT camera to be released all together. Despite being 10 years old it still has some kick left in it.

    I love how your channel isn't fixated on the latest and greatest camera gear.Your videos create a nostalgia for these early digital cameras. You review the experience of using these classics and show how all the new bells and whistles on modern cameras really don't make a huge difference in taking quality photos.

    Today I purchased my first camera: an Olympus PEN E-P1. I’ve watched many of your videos over the years and have always felt drawn to photography, but today I decided to take your advice and apply it. I wanted to really learn photography and although I have the money needed to purchase a brand new DSLR, those cameras do a lot of the work for you. So I want to thank you for inspiring me.

      I think they are doing alright in Japan. I think they are smart to stay in m4/3, segmenting them from the massive FF competition. But they need to bring back the high end compact camera for pros. The Pen-F was a step down from the EP5 imo.

      @@gearreallydoesntmatter Yup, exactly. By the way I own almost every Olympus ever released camera. E-P2 that is very similar to E-P1 produces the best out of camera jpegs of all of them. There is something special about old m43 12 mpix sensor. I also own E-P3 but for some reason they screwed it up by an excessive noise reduction even when you have it set to OFF. Cheers

    I bought an EP-1 a few years ago for $75. It had never been used. I really love that camera (and I've owned the EM-1, EM-5, and EM-10). My favorite EP-1 combinations are with the BCL15 (body cap lens) set to B&W, or with the Oly 17 for color. I particularly like the look of the B&W files that come out of EP-1. I feel that this camera has a simplicity of operation that is lacking in later Oly M4/3 cameras, almost like the film camera that is was based on. I don't need fifteen or twenty customizable controls - just a camera that I can learn and use quickly, directly and purposefully. I am tempted to pick up the Pen-F, as it is the direct descendant of the EP-1. I'm just waiting for the price to come down some more...

    I sympathize completely with your approach to obtaining great cameras inexpensively. I'm an Olympus devotee. I bought an E-M1 Mk1 for $400 Canadian, including a 50-150 zoom lens. There was no box or cables, but that's ok. I also bought an E-P5 body for $220. Being an Olympus guy, I already have a bag of lenses, so my Olympus 17mm f/1.8 lens is almost permanently attached to it now. I splurged and bought the Olympus optical viewfinder to go with this lens. These are fabulous cameras for a fraction of the price of new technology and other brands that, imo, are not worth the price of upgrading. Btw, I also have a Canon 5D classic with a couple of inexpensive primes. It feels almost like I've reverted to film when I use it.

    Nice! I've been buying / selling / using many of these older mirrrorless cameras, and the Panasonic GM1, GF1 and Sony NEX-5N (with the additional EVF) are all great. GM1 is very small, snappy and modern (excellent touch screen), much fun to use and the orange coloring brings me joy. Great camera then and now. GF1 has the lovely feel and excellent build quality, battery lasts very well in winter too (whereas others fade quickly). Very reliable, very robust and there's something nice about the 12 mpx sensor... NEX-5N is the aps-c quality upgrade, better sharpness / resolution and colors, the grip is superior, the tilting screen is welcome. It's quite nice with vintage lenses too, better overall than m4/3 i'd say. I prefer vintage lenses over native lenses with this camera.
    The tech is older, and so you'll miss some of the modern features (Better dynamic range / ISO, speed, IBIS etc.), but once you get past that, they're great! Great then, great now! Plus the low price makes them even better, and you'll lose the worry about damaging / losing gear as Mattias similarly mentioned. Thus, you'll push your gear and yourself that much more. You will dare and try, and succeed. Ultimately, it's just material / money / people / things etc. It's not that serious. It comes and goes. Just flow with it and let go of what needs the release. And release those shutter buttons.
    I'm next hoping to find the Panasonic GX1 (upgrade to GF1). That'll be interesting. All good things in due time...

      Plenty of used GX1's around in the UK. I managed to pick up a used GM1 just before lockdown and its performance is amazing. Now on the lookout for a reasonably priced used GM5 but they're like gold-dust

      @@cmartin_ok I see GM1's here regularly, but GX1 extremely rarely. Go for the GM5 if you are so inclined, but i wasn't the biggest fan it. Better buttons (in some regards) and some updated features, but the screen was 16:9 (more meant for video) and the viewfinder is very tiny and tunnel like.
      I prefer the cheaper GM1, because of the cheery orange color, better screen (aspect wise) and i'm not missing on any of the updated features. I get them from other cameras, like the later GX-series.

    This is why I shoot on film from time to time! It takes way longer, and it's pretty expensive so it forces me to take my time each shot.
    Hey! My 35mm is Olympus too! Sounds like it's the company of nostalgia.

    I have this camera and still use it. The Olympus colours to me are far better than my Fujifilm xt1 and X70 however it is a camera that is best suited for outdoor shooting with good to average light. A great review and fun to watch Mattias love to see some photos with fast lenses on this camera 🤗

      @dunsunyt Před 5 lety +1

      Yup, the same here. I also shoot Fujifilm as well and I have always prefered Olympus colors. Fujifilm colors are sometimes too much and they are often too cool why Olympus renders on a warmer side. Once you try Pen F you will never want to shoot any other camera for BW. It's such a customizable beast. If you set it properly there is no need to shoot RAW with that camera (at least for BW). Cheers

    I cling to my E-M5 despite better ones in my collection now; IBIS, better looks, and the EVF are worth extra cost over E-P1. When shooting with manual lenses there is no shortage of challenge (and fun!) to be had. Getting blurry images isn't much fun and using an LCD display for composing is less fun than the EVF.
    Still, I had a lot of fun with this video.

    Great video as always! The OVF framelines actually fit quite well with the Panny 20mm f/ 1.7, and that setup is my current 'everyday carry' camera (despite also owning an RD1, Sigma DP2M & SD Quattro).
    I picked mine up last year from an eBay seller based in Malmø for around 30 euros because the included kit lens was damaged. I'm British, the seller was British.. We met in a central square, shook hands, swapped the camera for cash and parted ways... As I walked away, I was stopped momentarily by an old Swedish gentleman. He was sitting nearby and had watched us. He gave me a 'knowing look', and said we were clearly MI6 agents. True story :)

    Thanks to you, I went ahead and picked up a Olympus pen EPL 1 for $40. Got some good shots and I am really satisfied with it . Maybe I'll get a better lens since the lens it came with has broken autofocus.

      Yeah spent about $50 on mine. Only problem is the flash doesn't work. Doesn't matter to me though. I got a Panasonic G1 last summer before my E-PL1 and only wanted the Olympus for video and the autofocus lens. Works great though

  • @vollpe1
    @vollpe1 Před 2 lety +1

    The stabilization in the EP-1 has a quality problem. If IS-1 flashes in the display, the gears of the stabilizer motors are probably defective. This is also the case with my camera - and the one shown in this video. Otherwise, I have years of fun and good photos with this camera. Because it is simply beautiful and a milestone for MicroFourThirds, it remains in my showcase.
