    I am planning to start small scale firewood business on my own. Now 2 thing may seem strange to you. I live in the Philippines which is tropical country and no one uses wood here to heat anything else but food. But I do live 2h away from city with population of 2mln and I hope it will be my profit right there. I have already done it in Northern Europe. But since I'm here now.. Lets keep money rolling.

    You can add a 'handle' to your bundle. Simply go one more wrap but bunch up the wrap to the middle at the top and let to go around the bundle until it reaches the 'handle.' Then you can put two pieces of packaging tape on each side of the handle to hold the loose end of the wrap. I think sticker is easier and better label... don't need to be that big. Just some thoughts.

    Retailers (over here) have at least a 30% - 35% margin, so (over here, Again) they earn more per bundle than Joe, who does all the work… OK, they have the financing and inventory risk + overhead costs but with close to 0% intrest rates for the time being, a bundle sold on a road side stand delivers more per bundle when priced somewhat below what the retailers do ask for. Sounds great, but you gotta remember, other businesses have beancounters too. Other locations that buy wholesale take half of the retail for themselves. I'd love to live in the world that you do, but around here, it's just a fantasy. Everyone has a BIL, ne'r do well nephew, or other, that makes firewood. Running up SR83 to take a load to my client in Cleveland, almost every other house had a sign by the driveway, "Firewood for Sale". So the only 'hook' I had was delivery, and quantity. And bundle wood was a disaster! One campground wouldn't even discuss it. They bundled their own, so I offered them a 3 cord truckload for $375. They'd already said "No", said "no" again, and told me to leave their property. How absolutely unsuccessful can you be? Luckily, my Cleveland retailers were not so hard to deal with. Be careful with "Success is guaranteed if you want it".
    If every bit of profit goes to your daughter's school, what do you live on? I only ask out of poverty....uh....curiosity.

Of course there's always limitations in business but if your biggest and first limitation is yourself, you're not going as far as you would have otherwise. There's plenty of limitations without you being one of them. You're going to hear no a lot of times before you get a yes.

    Hi Joe, as usual great information. In speaking with a supplier of firewood bags, the cost of bags seems pretty significant in the total cost of the product vs. the cost of shrink wrap. Less upfront cost, but higher ongoing costs for using bags. The same supplier gave some advice it's best to try and sell direct, make more money that way. He said that if a bag of firewood sells at a store for $7.50 you'll get about $4.50 to $5.00 a bag. How has your experience been with direct sales? Higher profit, maybe lower volume? Can you give your thoughts on website design, cost, and ongoing maintenance and any ongoing monthly fees? Thanks for all your positive advice, it's very helpful to a budding firewood bundling entrepreneur - Will

    What I have found is due to Honda utilizing no pay no penalty , and cutting people 3. Days per week over the summer(instead of them being able to use unemployment) there has been 1000% increase in people selling, producing firewood, bundles and small amount roadside stands. The people in this area are selling firewood bundles at $2.50 or less wholesale delivery, and running as hard as they can to make as little as they can.(badge of honor apparently,people brag how low they got their profit margin). The market is extremely diluted now because they were paid a part time wage at $20+ hr then had the time to produce. At the same time road side produce stands have jumped about 400% too. DJT covid policy really put the smack on self employed person's, and I thinks so intentionally.

    Hi Joe! We are new to the bundled firewood game. A few retailers I’ve contacted are reluctant because they would most likely keep it outside and they are not a 24 hour business and are worried about theft. Are you mostly in 24 hr businesses?

    • @TheDriftlessHomestead
      @TheDriftlessHomestead Před 2 lety +2

      One thing to consider... I have a stand at my house and still loose a couple. Wal-Mart has a system where the pay as the customer buys. Eliminating their labor and the supplier labor of checking in the product. So maybe if you accept the risk of your low cost product being stolen it will still pay off?

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  Před 2 lety +4

      All my accounts keep the wood inside. The industry term used for losses to theft etc is "Shrink." If the area is prone to high shrink maybe that location wouldn't be a good fit bc they would want to sell them cheaper and therefore want to pay you less per unit? I was working on a deal for a gas station chain that wanted me to come up with a lockable bin but for that extra work and given the $$ he was wanting to pay me per bundle it wasn't worth my time. I went and found higher end retailers.

      Hi Tyler. I don't sell to campgrounds. I don't see there being enough profit with them. Too much volume, too small $$. If you want to approach them ask them if they are happy with their current provider. I wouldn't expect to underbid them bc there prob isn't much of a markup to begin with. Notice if they complain that the guy is too unresponsive, won't answer his phone, etc. Win them over with service
