I liked the video. These Penguin editions belong to their Penguin English Library series. I have quite a few of them- Dickens and Hardy and some others. They are quite beautiful , no doubt about that. The front inside cover carries a beautiful photograph of the author, which is a bonus. [ I have removed some of these covers and framed them, as it is difficult to get good photos otherwise.] But I have two issues with them:
-they do not have any introduction and notes, like in the Penguin Classics series, which are especially helpful for foreign readers like me in appreciating the finer points. But each book carries an end of the book essay by a prominent writer which are good. For Instance, Jude The Obscure has an essay by Marjorie Garson, and Bleak House has an essay by J.Hillis Miller. They are quite interesting. But nothing like the detailed annotations or critical essays that Norton Critical editions carry.
    - the books have glued binding. And it does not hold fast, especially in our hot climate. It is not possible to open the book fully, without the risk of the pages coming apart. They adopt this type of binding irrespective of the size of the book: Jude the Obscure runs to 494 pages, while Bleak House is more than twice that size, running into 1084 pages. How will the glued binding hold?
Ironically, Penguins claim that they are committed to a sustainable future. How hollow is this claim! If they had adopted section stitching, the same volumes would have been more durable.
Almost every single Penguin that I bought since the early 60s has fallen apart, while the English Language Book Society volumes bought at the same time still remain intact, in spite of repeated reading. I did write to Penguins, and they did not respond. I have spent a fortune on books in the last 60 years ( to the great annoyance of my beloved wife) and I am sensitive to how durable the books are. A very simple paperback anthology of poems, " An Anthology of Longer Poems" edited by Moles and Moon , published by Longmans in 1959 which I have been reading since then is still with me, because it is section sewn. Glued binding may represent a technical advance, but ill serves the consumer. We do not buy Classics and poetry to read and throw. Making things last longer is the way to care for a sustainable future.
Incidentally. I bought an edition of The Great Expectations by Dorling Kindersley ( New York) in 2009. It has a flexicover, with beautiful illustrations. It is larger than the average paperback ( 6"x9") with bigger fonts. The paper is nice, and each page carries a picture at the edge. There is a map indicating the key locations where the story takes place, and there is also an illustrated glossary at the end. How do we know what is a 'gibbet-station' unless we see an illustration! { even some dictionaries - eg. Longmans - does not carry this entry, and they explain gibbet as a place to hang criminals!] Foot notes explain some words which must be difficult even for the average English reader. There is a short introduction on why read the story, and on the life of Dickens. These features make the book so valuable. I wish I could show a picture of it here. I do not know whether DK published more such books.
Publishers should love the books, more than the money they bring.

New sub here! I am absolutely loving your channel and am planning to binge watch your videos very soon lol. I have 23 of the Penguin Classics, 9 Persephone editions, and a few of the Chalks. I've seen the Threads, but hadn't seen the Knickerbocker Classics or the Penguin Deluxe editions. Glad you put them on my radar! Not that I NEED anymore books to luster after, but hey, I'm a total bibliophile lol.

Really? Here in the US we call bobbins the little flat top and bottom spools you put inside the sewing machine to sew the underneath of the stitches.
