8-bit Gameboy Grooves on Linnstrument

- I used my brand new Linnstrument to create a song that sounds like an oldskool Gameboy. I was in a nostalgic mood I guess...
It has all the qualities of a classic gameboy tune:
- It sounds like crap
- It sounds like my childhood
- It's annoying and addictive at the same time :-)
More about the process of building this + a version with 'real' instruments in this video!

Nice to see someone using the linnstrument as it deserves 😉
whoa i guess I've just found this channel before it blows up because your content is awesome.
Haha thanks! I think I need to do more stuff like collabs for it to really go somewhere :-) I'm working on that. Just moved to a new house, new studio, got myself a nice pro camera, so as soon as I unpacked all my boxes... it's on!
@@TheQuestforGroove I think your video was suggested to me because I watched some videos on the MPK mini mk2.
Maybe try making more videos like you did with the ROLI? I found that helpful and entertaining. Especially the tip to play it like you'd play a percussion instrument. I too play guitar and have little to no piano experience.
Yeah that's a good one! More videos about the creative process for sure. Seen the "composing an EPIC theme song" video yet? Those are the most fun :-)
I love this! Thanks for keeping it clean so my 5 y/o can learn to play.
Great tune! :) And great production!
Thank you, that means a lot to me!
Amazing! This is my childood too!
Linnstrument arriving on Tuesday! Can’t wait! Subbed dig your video stylings. Cheers.
Ah yeah! Linnstrument rocks. I wanted to become a master at it in 2019 but I stopped practicing... I'm going to try again in 2020 though!
@@TheQuestforGroove I believe in you!!! we will quest for mastery in parallel :-) you playin on bitwig yet?
@@Sebastianandthedeepbluemusicnot yet!
The Quest for Groove it’s an mpe machine. So fun.
@@Sebastianandthedeepbluemusic A I actually use Cubase daw which is full mpe as well. And I have the roli equator synth and a cello from swam instruments. Very nice!
Dang, I did not expect the Linnstrument to sound so life-like! And of course your playing style is quite awesome !
^_^
Haha, yeah. Honestly: the linnstrument truly shines when playing expressive parts. So with lots of dynamics, note swells, vibrato etc.
Theres a big difference in 'skill' required to make linnstrument sound like a fun toy (which I do now) and make it sound like some real instrument.
I got to practice some more in order to reliably do that!
Nice!
Dude, this is awesome!!!!
Thanks man. I sort of used that roli blocks technique for fingerdrumming here as well :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove yes, I figured! but this is working really well :-) how's the sensitvity on the Linnstrument?
Very good. In my opinion it's not an optimal solution for percussive things but for everything else I tried the sensitivity is what it should be. Sometimes you have to adjust velocity curves a bit. For example with a nice kontakt piano you have to set it to "keyboard" velocity instead of the standard stage piano curve in order to get it to play well. But yeah... I'm happy.
@@TheQuestforGroove oh cool, great! interesting. thanks for the reply.
Hi Rob, Love this video. They are just getting better and better :) I'm interested how does playing on the Linnstrument feel compare to playing on your regular pads? The target to 'hit' with your fingers seems so much smaller. Do you find yourself having to look down more at the Linn to hit the pads? ...I notice you often don't always look at your regular pads at all when playing the Maschine.
Thanks Stuart! Linnstrument is the best for playing sounds that aren't 100% percussive. The way the sensor system works it seems to not be ideal for triggering drums. It does a decent job but I prefer my maschine for sure.
It is great for playing everything else though. Expressive synths, horns, piano even. Great. Very nice and easy to understand for a guitar player!
And yea, I'm trying not to look too much but while learning it's not easy to play completely without looking. On top of that the led lights seem to have a pretty low refresh rate so if you look at them closely for too long you'll get dizzy :-)
This is fantastic! Really psyched to see the Linnstrument community growing! I've got two questions for ya. What sensitivity settings do you prefer on the Linnstrument? Also, I noticed that you have the lit note layout tweaked, is that solely for aesthetic reasons or do you find it easier navigation-wise? Again, great playing and I'm looking forward to more!
Thanks! I prefer medium settings. When I need a different response I usually tweak the velocity curves inside the software instrument. So inside roli equator synth for example and not on the linnstrument itself.
And I changed the note layout because I don't want the note C to be highlighted. It's not more important than the other notes so I found it distracting.
And then I noticed I could make these tetris shapes to mark the whole notes vs half notes and I just found It easy to learn where all the notes were by looking a the tetris shapes :-)
@@TheQuestforGroovethanks for the detailed answer, really appreciate it! and having it laid out ala tetris is amazing, haha
I pop mine on just the medium velocity sensitivity. I have my minimum velocity set at 30 because sometimes notes can be too soft for wurli and piano sounds
@@TheQuestforGroovecould you explain why you find the interval color changes helpful for you to when learning to play thing thing. I think another linnstrument video is due.lol ok great video
Yup. It grooves.
Great Video :) How would you compare the fingerdrumming experience on the Linnstrument compared to your pad controllers, especially in regard to the sensitivity? Right now I am making beats on the Roli Lightpad, so the small space is not an issue for me. Even though I primarily want to play notes on the Lynnstrument , I would like know whether I would have to spend my money on a decent pad controller on top of the 1000€+ investment for a dynamic playstyle
I think the sensor system of the linnstrument works in a way that does not make it the ultimate best thing for fast percussive hits. It's pretty good, but whenever i switch to my maschine mk3 I notice a significant difference and I'm happy that I also have a maschine for finger drumming.
That said, you can do stuff on the linnstrument in terms of drumming as I demonstrate in this video. You have to keep it simple I guess...
Hope this helped!
@@TheQuestforGroove It did, thank you :)
This is natural home x
That LINNstrument is awesome ...when played by sometime who knows how to
It's really great. Enormous amount of possibilities when using midi polyphonic expression.
I've only played it for a short while so stay tuned for more and better demonstrations in the future!
@@TheQuestforGroove Any new videos planned with the linnstrument? :)
I'm practicing every day now (sort of messed that up in 2020) so yeah once I can play something cool ill share!
@@TheQuestforGroove great, looking forward to it! I am considering buying a l'instrument myself. I play the guitar but would love to play with other sounds such as piano and cello
Its easier than piano for a guitar player. That's something I noticed immediately.
🔥🔥🔥
Hey interested. do have any drum layout methods for the linnstrument? similar to how you've done with other controllers?
Since linnstrument has 8 vertical rows you can set it up exactly like you would setup a launchpad x or pro, have you seen my 8x8 layout videos about those? I wouldn't recommend it for drumming though... something about how it responds makes it a little less good than a normal midi controller.
@@TheQuestforGroove Yeah I have noticed it doesn't have the best response for playing in drum sounds. I love playing Linnstrument for keyboard sounds. but I think the MPD218 has a better feel for drum stuff. I used to have a push but even that didnt beat the mpd.
the launchpad video you did sounded so good. made the drum kit with all the variations sound convincingly real.
I really like the new launchpads. Very good value for money!
@@TheQuestforGroove what do they feel like. do they have a more hard press or bouncy feel like the mpd?
They don't press down in any way. Its basically a thin sheet of rubber over a wooden board. The material makes it easy to slide over but if you hit it it'll feel pretty hard.
Laughing so hard at the b section. I instantly started thinking, what game is this from
Ok so you mastered linnstrument pretty fast, but you could do the same with a keyboard or launchpad pro... so I'm asking what's point bringing linnstrument to the picture
The thing I'm playing here can be done on launchpad as well is my guess although slides might he hard. You cannot play this exact melody on a keyboard. The layout is too inconvenient.
The coolest stuff about linnstrument in terms of midi polyphonic expression is actually not really demonstrated in this video. I'm still figuring that out. I'm not that comfortable playing It yet.
So the reason is just that I own a linnstrument and needed to play a melody and linnstrument was the best thing to use for the job. No deeper reason :-)
The Quest for Groove , thanks Robert I know you'll get more cool grooves with this great controller :)
I liked the GameBoy version better.
Yeah me too. The song was written with the gameboy sounds so that just works better. It's the same thing with old games that get remastered with new soundtracks and more "realistic" sounds. Ususally it loses some of its magic.
