SOUTH OF IRELAND PIPING & DRUMMING CONTEST 2011
Again, this year, Cobh has the privilege of hosting the South of Ireland Piping and Drumming Contest. It takes place on Sunday 6th June in the centre of Cobh with competitions in 3 grades commencing at 1.30pm. Bands start to arrive to the Promenade area at 11am. From this time the bands can be seen tuning and doing final practices of their competition sets.
It is hoped to have 11 visiting bands on the day from all over the south of Ireland. During competition bands are judged on piping, drumming and uniform, with a parade of bands from the old Town Hall at 5pm to the Luisitania Monument. There is then a salute played to the Chieftain of the Day who this year is Sonia O'Sullivan, followed by her address to the crowd and the prize-giving. At 6pm the day concludes with a Massed Bands Parade to the Cobh Heritage Centre.
As with previous years this is a fantastic sight and sound to finish off a fantastic day out. During the day there is also a local Farmer's Market located in the Promenade. Any further details can be obtained from St Colman's Pipe Band on 085 8477128 or 087 6849565.
