- a serious note: after doing the Darkstalkers stream I've seen so much content of that game that we didn't see when we played it because we're scrubs and didn't know inputs for supers. PLEASE check out this game if you thought it looked cool because there is so much left unexplored in this video. also I'm pretty sure Cuphead's bee boss is just a direct Q -Bee reference.

I believe the thing with Victor's butt is that the artist who designed him liked men with big butts, so she gave him a big butt.
John Talbain is funny because he was a werewolf first and a karate master second. He tried to learn karate for self-control to stop the werewolf and all it ended up doing is teaching the werewolf half karate.
BB Hood is really cool as well. She's a trained killer who hunts down darkstalkers for sport. Her animations are all attacks disguised as something else, like chasing butterflies or petting her dog. When she actually wields her guns, her true nature comes out.
What do you mean? John Talbain's karate training worked.
Before, he was basically a stock standard bloodthirsty beast, but the training has gotten him to the point where he has actual control of himself when transformed. He's still pretty beastly, but he can actually think rationally.

bb doesn't hunt for sport, she hunts for money, dark hunter is literally just her occupation. does she enjoy her job to an unhealthy degree? absolutely, anyone looking at her animations and win quotes could tell you that, but those same animations and quotes also tell you she still sees the hunting of the makai's residents as a job first and foremost.

i felt so recuperated when they declared Talbain as a "lame fighter." This is a game where each fighter is an MGM toon on crack. How did they include a literal *wolf guy* who *knows karate* and make him devoid of bonkers animations???

Dude if you see woolie or Maximilian when someone mentions darkstalkers they always die inside a little because it's so good and not enough people talk about it or give it the attention it deserves
the main reason people don't talk about it is that its just so out of the main streams notice becauseof the time it came out in during the earlier days of the more well known fighting games it was ALREADY an OG thats just sadly how the march of time goes though, the DNA that makes up the current popular media is out meanwhile its influence remains.
If you don't know, lilith has a super grab where she forces you to play a mini rhythm game, and depending on how well the opponent does, they take more or less damage
Fun fact: the talisman on Lei-Lei's head is actually her sister. I don't know why or how, but it is.
Another fun fact: That's apparently called a _fulu_, and is meant to be a ward against curses (I believe the implication here is that Lei-Lei's undead and the _fulu_ was placed over her face when she was laid to rest?)

The animations in Darkstalkers are phenomenal. It really is one of those games were you just wanna appreciate everything frame by frame.

When gray said that there's a lot to process at 3:38 it was a subtle reference to the fact the hardware couldn't process all the frames of animation for all the characters so the game ended up looking super choppy, what a smart, subtle reference.

Darkstalkers has so many awesome character designs and it’s a real shame that capcom refuses to make any new instalments. I know developing games isn’t cheap, but not a single new Darkstalkers since 1997 is unreal.
Makes me think of the horrible rerelease they did, Capcom pretty much said "if you want a new Darkstalkers then buy this worse version of a game you probably already own, if you don't then no new stuff". It's just really sad and I do hope they bring it back.
Check out the OVA movie for Darkstalkers. It's pretty good if you keep your expectations low. Not much plot and | wish it didn't shaft a lot of characters ion the screen time, but I feel like it mostly kept the general theme of the games.
I do want a modern game. But then, part of me is glad it hasn't been become what Street Fighter has.
They're probably trying to get 3d animation down, characters like Dhalsim still look kinda fucky in the newer games so it wouldn't be a stretch to assume most Darkstalkers characters would have a harsh transfer.
Boss fights with Kenji should be like Sans' fight in Undertale where he counts how many times he's killed you, but here he just tosses another hat into a pile each new attempt

I find it funny on how Grayfruit knows nothing about the mechanics of many of these games yet he knows about SG and can parallel Talbain's moves to Beowulf lol
Skullgirls straight up lifted half the moveset and characer art of this game. Filia for example has about half of morrigans moveset. Fortunes walk cycles is the same as felicias. Etc. It was obvious even before they mentioned it.

As a neat lil tidbit, there are a few moves in Red Earth that provide unique death animations when used to kill a boss! There's animations for getting chopped in half horizontally, vertically, and a special one for one of Kenji's moves.

I love that in each edit it feels like Grayfruit comes back in more and more fighting game knowledge out of the blue, like the next one he's gonna talk about frame data and the recent Evo results

I played a lot of Skullgirls when I was younger (mostly story mode) and even though I knew almost nothing about Darkstalkers I can't believe I didn't realize how much Skullgirls was inspired by it artistically. I may have to go learn to play Ms. Fortune because words cannot describe how cool Raptor is and how much I need to play him...
Now people understand why fans want Capcom to make a Revival out of this. It's funny, it's sexy, it's weird, it's crazy. It is the grandfather of anime games.
I just recently started binge watching this channel and the fact that this channel is so far behind the streams is the funniest thing ever.

half circles on old fighting games are notoriously annoying, i think because you cant skip any of the directions, but it's really easy to do so. modern games usually let you skip one of the diagonals or something on half circles

Grayfruit, PLEASE play Heritage For The Future. It's such a fun game and the community is small but loyal! It's also a really faithful game about part three with an interesting story mode.

the rock hand is actually to ward you from evil and pointing it at someone is cursing them which casting magic is kinda the same (a lot of old wizard art shows them casting magic while doing that symbol) dio learned it from his grandmother then turned it into a symbol for rock after doing it at concerts or whatever
also it's not a kunai on a rope/chain it's a kusarigama a lesser but well known ninja weapon a kama and a kusari-fundo love child made to look like farm equipment but able to take out samurai or whomever they are trying to kill
The Moment in Red Earth when Lark realized that it wasnt the last Boss reminded me of Prinny, where theres also a big awful powered up piece of armor that seems like its the final boss but then it just isnt. Theres a weird old man afterwards as well.
they should make a new darkstalkers with an artstyle similar to skullgirls. that would kick ass.

Hot damn tho, this game’s visuals hold up insanely well. Kinda glad they didn't actually put out a game in 2011; now that we're in a post-Guilty Gear Strive world I can safely say they could capture DS' iconic style and flair in 3D.

About the 2012 darkstalkers trailer, it seems to be for the ds3/nw release on xbox 360 since that was also 2012. I hope I'm wrong but that's all i seemed to find from a quick search!

You knownwhat I know a lot of trivia about this game so:
-viktor has been confrimed as the sexiest character by the artist. She make the but funny and central in some attacks just cuz is funny and hot.
-similarly to most-boring-chracter-dracula, Q-bee has an attack that injects so much poison that inflates a character on a specific bodypart with unique animations.
-there are 2 animes. Japanese one is a serious but not so good but really good in ambience. USA one has more memes than the street fighter one, Lord Raptor does the most wicked shit like entering an office with a summoned elevator from hell doing the hardest scream ever.
-i don't know the kid from hutziel, but the girl from Donovan is the strongest character (a psychic) and I know no more
-jedah, same voice actor as Dio, also inspired by jojo
-i don't know if you've seen the jedah's standing pose in which he sweats Blood. I think is edgy and cool.
-actually, Q-bee has the most porn. Unrelated to the inflation.
-of all the characters, I believe sasqwatch is the "joke character", but this game feels like they try to make the characters too cool to be a joke.
-lilith's gender has been a discussion for some time. Which is funny.
-as far as I know, this is the only fightning game that lets you use all the old specials in the newest game, with the different modes. Probably it's about how fucking hard all the animations look and how sad woul It be to lose 'em.
-there is a lot about the samurai and I remember nothing about It
-hsien-ko sometimes summons her sister, her sister is the talisman. The name of her sister is Lei-Lei. I guess they're reversed.
If I remember anymore, I'll come back. This is still my favourite fightning game.
