  • Low back pain sufferers should find this technique for getting in and out of bed quite pain free. I recommend this technique every day to prevent low back trouble. There is a modified version of this in the goodwinclinics low back playlist

Thank you so much! I’ve been off of work for 2 weeks now because I had an accident and injured my lower back and every single night I went to lay down and every morning I got out of bed my lower back would flare up every single time even after a full day of doing really good with stretches and feeling like I made some progress but that all goes away when it’s time to get in or out of bed. I was basically almost stuck only being able to stand or walk around I couldn’t sit at all without having muscle spasms or a disc flare up whatever I have… I started to not even want to get in and out of bed because I knew getting up and down was gonna set it off again. I literally thought I was about to go nuts because all I could do was stand to be pain free i honestly couldn’t take anymore. Watched countless CZcams videos on stretches which did help but nothing about what you show here which literally just saved my life I’m so grateful man 😢

Eureka moment!....I have had a lower back issue for 3 weeks now...diagnosed as sciatica with pain down one leg. The act of sitting down or rising from a chair giving me the most severe pain I have ever experienced in my whole life. The doctor said take paracetamol and eventually should remedy itself.Well none of this medication alleviated the shooting pain that I got when I was at a certain angle when rising or sitting or laying down.Oh and I was given some exercises to try.I am a piano tuner and have had to cancel appointments so far because of the trauma I go through when sitting and rising from the piano stool thus the potential of creating an embarrassing moment in front of the client.
Today I scanned You tube for some sciatica remedies and came across your video.I put your information to the test and for the first time today in 3 weeks I can get up and sit down without going into painful spasm.such a simple procedure..I just wonder why my doctor and physio never suggested this.I can now function normally although there is still pain but not the frightening and excruciating pain during the act of sitting and standing from seated position and the fact that it would probably hinder the healing process....Thank you so much for posting this.I'm hoping now that I will experience some improvement to my condition and now I am prepared to continue with my tuning work....Again thank you!

@@jordya6303 Yes, thanks for asking....must say the pain has subsided a lot in the last 2 weeks..so I'm hoping I'm on the mend.I had MRI scan this week and the cause is pressure on L5 vein.Caused by T5 disc pressing on it. caused by trauma experienced when doing some heavy lifting of garden slabs...Hopefully in a couple of weeks I should be back to normal.I have to be careful in future when lifting heavy things like garden slabs!

Actually, its usually easier on a softer surface. Are you doing this correctly? (usual incorrect problem is not pivoting at the hips enough). If this is still painfull and you are doing it correctly, then I advise you stop and seek an in person consultation with a local professional. Good luck

I found it easier to have a stool next to the bed and push myself up. It is too painful to brace my body. Also, when you are going to stand up, lean forward a few times. I found that it stretched the lower part of my back and was less painful when I stood up.

Two problems. My father has a big stomach so he can't reach that point and and also top heavy, so his legs come up, not his upper body.
The second is that the bed is soft, so instead of being pushed up, his arm, elbow goes into the bed.
    Otherwise it's good.

I have a L5 compression fracture. I was told that I should get in and out of bed like this but it hurts more than to do the “reverse push-up” method. It is excruciatingly more painful. I keep getting told different things on how I should do it the way that’s more comfortable or this because I can’t be twisting my back. Honestly I don’t even care because if I’m gonna hurt the rest of my life with a bad back (I’m only 19) I’ll be getting up and down the way that doesn’t hurt.

Instead you use your elbow, much better to use opposite arm and push to stand up. If person is overweight it's very difficult to do this way

    • @goodwinclinics

Be careful when using your opposite arm as you will be twisting your spine. For overweight people this is sometimes necessary as you point out.

Hi Pat, have you tried getting up on the non injured side? If you still have to get up on the injured side, just use your "good arm" to help get you as high as you need to. Try to avoid the twisting in your back that this will cause. Some patients have also used a stick in the other arm to push up. Good luck.
