Thank you for clarifying the differences. I always thought the trim kit only had to do with the type of face panel for the faucet handle(s) -- either standard or expanded (when changing dual-handled controls into a single). Now I know it entails EVERYTHING visible in the shower/bath. I never knew what a "rough-in" was....I just called it the cartridge but now know it's EVERYTHING behind the scenes.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Am I correct that while we can fix or update the shower trim easily, the wall tiles have to be removed in order to fix or replace the valve if it does not work properly? Doesn't it make sense to get those shower and tub faucets with exposed valve design for easier service and maintenance in the long run? Any advice you could share would be much appreciated.

how come these kits don’t include the drain plate and stopper assembly? doing a bathroom reno and am ready to buy the trim kit so the plumber can come out and hook all that up but i’m noticing i need to buy the drain parts separately. would seem like that should be included as well. ???
