It’s so satisfying to see many pages filled with just writing. I’m sorry to hear that you lost your earlier journals. Your talent and the experiences you’ve had will always stay with you. I love the look of molkeskine but because I like my fountain pen too much I haven’t tried it out yet... hope they upgrade the paper someday!

Moleskine can handle some fountain pens and inks. If you don't use a very broad nib or super wet ink you should be fine!

I’m so sorry someone chose to let you know they couldn’t watch your videos because of your handwriting. Seems pretty shallow to me. You are MORE than your handwriting! I’ve enjoyed your passion for notebooks very much. I think you provide a great service to those looking for the perfect notebook for their needs. I very much enjoyed the format of this video and how you wrote out all the questions! I’m sure the people whose questions were represented here were thrilled to see them in print;) I am glad I stumbled upon this channel when doing a search for moleskine expanded notebook;) thanks for this channel! Only problem with Tomoe River is that they are expensive. I ordered the one from Galen Leather (Turkey) and the price was not bad. However customs fees and VAT ended up almost doubling what I paid. I live in UK. Overall it went from "being super worth it with good cost per page" to "never going to buy again from Turkey". That being said, the paper is amazing.

I’m loving your videos so far. I used to journal daily when i was younger, but when the internet age took over i went to typing. I love both, but computers effectively killed my journaling. I still have most of my old journals though. All but one… which was stolen by some girl who liked me when i was 15 and never given back lol. I empathize with you on your poetry journal, you must’ve had great stuff in there. And don’t feel bad about your handwriting, chickens have nothing on me.
Journals are beautiful because they are mental time capsules. While photos preserve a setting, journals are a window to your mind at that time.
You are inspiring me to write again. I just got The Artists Way in audiobook form and a Moleskine is on the way. Thanks for sharing your passion for writing, we need to keep it alive forever.

Great job. Thanks. On notebook apps, a suggestion: I use iA Writer (not a dedicated journal app) because it corrects my spelling, stores in markdown individual text files, and accepts scans of my analog journal. Creating a final digital (w/analog scanned pages) Kindle book (or ePub) is simple at the end of the year.

GSM has nothing to do with paper quality. Anything over 90gsm is usually an attempt to hide poor paper quality. 90gsm is 24lb paper. Anything thicker than this has more disadvantages that advantages, and really high quality paper for writing should never be thicker than 24lb/90gsm. If it is, there's a problem.
Really good paper doesn't need more than 65gsm to prevent ghosting and certainly bleed through. The extra thickness with high quality paper is simply to prevent tears, creasing, and other damage, while making the paper easier to handle. It just feels substantial.
I use fountain pens 98% of the time, and I use a lot of different inks. Right now, I have 349 different inks, and pens ranging from five dollars all the way up to low end new car money. Dingbats paper is pretty good, but it's nowhere near the quality of Clairfontaine or Rhodia. Clairfontaine and Rhodia stand up to every ink I have. Despite their brag of being "ink proof", Dingbats paper does not, even though it's 100gsm. Actually, it doesn't stand up BECAUSE it's 1--gsm.
Just look at what goes into the paper, and the manufacturing process. For paper that's supposed to be ink proof, and for a ridiculous amount of money for paper made the way it is, I have five times the ink problems with Dingbats as with Clairfontaine or Rhodia.
People also seem to think that Rhodia uses the same paper as the paper in Clairfontaine notebooks. I understand the confusion, but it simply isn't true.
When Clairfontaine bought Rhodia, they started making the same paper that was already in Rhodia. So even though Rhodia uses paper that's made by Clairfontaine, that paper is substantially different from the paper inside Clairfontaine notebooks. So, yes, Rhodia uses Clairfontaine paper. It must because Clairfontaine owns Rhodia. But this does not mean it's the same paper people think of as Clairfontaine. It's a different line of paper made specifically for Rhodia.
Rhodia uses both 90gsm and 80 gsm paper. But insiders say it also uses a better coating on the higher end notebooks than on the lower end ones, such as the side staplebound. Even the cheapest Rhodia paper is very, very good, but it does seem toothier than the more expensive ones.
Anyway, my favorite notebook/journal depends on what I'm using it for. I use the large casebound Black n' Red notebooks for my journal because I discovered them about fifty years ago, the year after they hit the market, I think,. Very, very little fountain pen friendly paper was available here at that time, and there was no internet. It's good fountain pen paper, and I see no reason to mess up the shelves with personal journal notebooks that don't match.
For testing ink, and often for letter writing, I love any notebook with Tomoe River 68gsm. There is no better paper for showing off the ink you're using.
When I want high quality paper for all around use, there's only one choice, and that's Apica. I love the look and the feel of the paper, and how well it handles fountain pen inks at such a low price.
I don't use Rhodia notebooks, but I do use Rhodia tablets. A couple each month. For an extremely important letter to an important person, I use Tomoe River loose leaf paper, but for all other letters, I use Rhodia.
I do use Clairfontaine notebooks, and they're my favorite for a couple of non-personal journals I keep. My favorite for a productity/project journal is the 1917. Nothing else works as well for me.
Then comes a BUNCH of hard to get here Japanese and European notebooks that have fantastic paper, bindings, and covers. Several of these could easily be my favorites for almost everything, if I could get them here without jumping through hooks, and paying well above an already high cover price.
Then, of course, I try every inexpensive notebook I can find. Some of these are pretty darned good. Even the Exceed notebooks sold at Walmart are very, very good journals, now that they've changed the paper they use. They're under ten bucks, but I like them better than Dingbats.
I have several problems with Dingbats notebooks, starting with cost for what you get, and ending with the "leather" covers they use. I used to tan leather, way, way back when, and when I see something made with Genuine Leather, I run away. When i see something made with PU leather, such as Dingbats uses, I fly away at breaking the sound barrier speed.
I won't even try to describe the process for making PU Leather, but it's not pretty, and it's not good leather, even though it can seem great at first.
Genuine Leather also doesn't mean what most think it does. People see this and think, "Oh, it's made from real leather!" Well, yesy it is, that's not why it's called "Genuine Leather. The top layer of a steer hide is far and away the best leath. This is often called "full grain", or "top Grain" depending on the exact cut. Each layer below this has an official name.
The bottom layer is the worst leather on a hide, and the official name for this bottom layer is "Genuine Leather". Whoever name dit that was a genius Ove rthe decades, billions of leather products have sold because buyers see that it's made from "Genuine Leather", and don't realize this actually means it's made from the worst layer of the steer hide.
So when i come across a notebook with a cover made from "Genuine Leather", I may buy it, but only if it's very, very cheap.
PU Leather? No, I won't buy it at any price.

thank you for the great video! one dumb question: can the ink fade out with the time? wondering if that is a concern for you and if you take any measure to prevent that, like choosing some types (or brands) of paper and ink over others. the ink fading and the fear to lose the journals (like you reported in this video, so sorry to hear that) are two big concerns of mine, related to journaling :(

Luca Lazzarini thank you Luca! I haven’t had any problem with ink fading. I even have some school notes from elementary school written with fountain pen ink and it’s fine. Just make sure the journal is not exposed to the sun and even more important don’t ever get it wet. Sounds like a Gremlin, haha. Joke aside if you worry about that you’d be better off with waterproof pens.
