Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on CZcams. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over seven years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
Extreme dehydration is a medical emergency. If anyone reading this is ever dealing with extreme dehydration due to throwing up a lot, being lost in the desert for too long (edited note: you'd need to get out of the desert via finding your way or getting rescued), pregnancy complication, etc... please go to the hospital as needed.
Yes. It can kill you. Even young, healthy patients
When you're lost in the desert, how do you go to the hospital?
@@adenshures6573 This was my first thought
@@adenshures6573😂 thank you, I was thinking the same.
@@adenshures6573I too had the same question.😂😂 I’m guessing the commenter meant the civilized desert, like Palm Springs or somewhere. But yeah if you’re lost anywhere, you have bigger problems to deal with. Add a medical emergency to being lost in the middle of nowhere and we’ll be mourning you at your funeral. Seriously, it’s definitely a scary issue that can be life threatening.
As a retired Nurse, please go to the E.R God forbid if theres a next time. You would be surprised how much better you can get with Iv fliuds and Anti Nausea meditation. Glad your doing much better, food poisoning is no joke.❤
I had IV fluids once and I felt so good after and my face looked so much younger I thought I wanted to have it all the time. Never did.
I fight dehydration every day. My BP drops so bad, they cannot get a reading. IV works wonders.
I’m not a nurse but I thought the same thing. I’m speaking as a frequent patient in the ER and hospital. IV fluids have helped me many times.
These two Shane Burcaw and Hannah Aylward do this for views.
I would add that ANY one with food poisoning should go to the ER, not just someone who has additional health concerns. As you know, depending on the poison, it can be deadly and get very bad very quickly.
Others have chimed in about this, but if this ever happens again, someone needs to call 911 right away regardless of whether or not Shane wants to go. Considering his medical situation, they could've gotten an IV into him immediately to at least ensure he wasn't dehydrated. He just doesn't have the same bandwidth to withstand this sort of thing that most of us could just power through. For him, it's an emergency.
This is really an emergency for anyone. If a person is throwing up constantly for any length of time and can't keep *any* fluids down it's very dangerous even if they do not have confounding medical conditions. Most people resist going but it has the potential to turn out very very badly, very quickly.
You can't get a needle into a dehydrated vein
@@ayasha89games66 I've had severe dehydration (volume loss), unable to stand, and had to be carried out of the house and taken by ambulance to the hospital -- and they definitely got a needle into me to provide IV fluids. I was there when it happened.
@@Tserit’s very hard, but professionals can do it.
1. It's almost impossible to get an IV into his tiny veins. 2. If Shane didn't want to go that's his decision. You can try and talk him into it but you don't get to force disabled people to do what they don't want to do.
You know if your muscles were so weak, your heart is a muscle and it could have gotten to weak to beat. You should have gone to the hospital right away. You needed IV fluids and IV nausea medicine. Don´t you ever wait like that again. I am a retired nurse and a mother, so you better listen. Glad you are still with us.
Love it . especially being a mother part!
The heart muscle is not a skeletal muscle
@@Stalemarshmallow It is still affected by electrolyte swings. Dehydration may cause arrhythmias.
@@suzanne529 this is true, but, just pointing out that Shane’s heart wouldn’t weaken like his skeletal muscles because cardiac muscle is not affected by SMA
@@Stalemarshmallow So SMA only affects skeletal muscles (I'm assuming that means muscles attached to the skeleton)? I didn't know that Shane's heart isn't affected.
I had to force my Dad to go to the ER by ambulance last week. They said they did not need to take him, it was up to us. He did not want to go. He (eventually) did. Because I tossed my weight around. Never so happy I did.
We learned from the ER that he was septic and in active (recoverable) kidney failure. He’s currently an in-patient and is still getting IV antibiotics and fluids, but he’s now getting better (7 days later) but he has at least another week of hospital recovery.
Your title struck a very timely close to home. So glad you’re doing better, Shane! 💕 from 🇨🇦 to you both!
SO glad you listened to your gut! Likely saved his life!
I am glad that he is ok now. 🙏🏼❤️
That sounds pretty scary Shane. Glad you regained your strength. 🙏🏼❤️
I’m so sorry to hear your dad was that ill. I lost my dear sister to sepsis 8 years ago this August. She was in a very reputable hospital in ICU. They couldn’t save her. We later learned most people don’t recover from sepsis. Be ever vigilant of your dad. It is just a horrible way to go
I'm glad you listened to your gut instinct and saved your Dad!! My dad has been in Heaven since May 7th,2014. I miss him everyday and I know he's my guardian angel and I'll see him again soon.
I had food poisoning when I was 33 weeks pregnant. I went to the ER…. The ER doctor was the worst and told me I was puking because I was pregnant… go home and drink water and pedialyte…. I was furious, went straight upstairs and demanded to see my OB…. She was FURIOUS with the ER doctor and it was a whole thing. Glad Shane is okay… food poisoning is no joke!
Please, please if anything like this happens ever again to either of you or your loved ones (God forbid) rush to the nearest ER. The complications can be fast and unpredictable. Stay safe❤ Shane I’m so happy you’re better😊
My daughter had food poisoning a few months ago. She has additional needs and has aspirated in the past, which caused her to be in the ICU for two weeks. This time, thankfully, she didn't need to be admitted, but was in the ER for about 8-9 hours. She got 4 bags of fluid though an IV & they added nausea meds to that. It is a really dangerous thing so please, always get medical attention!! So glad you're doing better!
As one who has had similiar violent food poisoning- please get an ambulance to the ER to get IV fluids if faced with a similar situation. My last time was in Ireland under inconvenient circumstances. But it saved me.
Activated charcoal is a lifesaver for any type of poisoning or medication reaction. It quickly absorbs the toxin and flushes it out. Within 15 minutes you will feel much better and be able to drink liquids. It's completely harmless and used in hospitals to absorb toxins.
I carry it everywhere as I'm sensitive to bad food and medication reactions.
I once had food poisoning this extreme. I had fast food. I was lying on the sofa and my body literally hurt so bad that I couldn’t turn over. All I could do was throw up then lay perfectly still. My mom said “You should really go to the hospital”. At that point I would rather die than have to move.
Ah, the longing for death. I once had a hangover like that
Benedryl really helps with food poisoning 👍
It can b rubbed on the skin & is amazing for settling the stomach.
The capsules can b opened & rubbed on with lotion or water. Or the tablets can b crushed 👍
Helps reverse the bodies reaction...
My spouse and I have a rule we made in the last few years because of the pandemic actually! If either of us pukes 3 times, doesn't matter how bad, in less than 24 hours... we go to the ER. We've found that if we wait longer than that, we're unsafely dehydrated and in such bad shape that it makes it harder to get to a hospital.
@@alywren6438 that's so smart. I did once end up so badly dehydrated that I had to be physically carried into the car and then into the ER by my roommate🫤
@@alywren6438and so much harder for them to treat you ❤
Sorry to hear about this horrible event Shane and I am happy to see you looking well. However, a trip to the ER would have been a better choice than toughing it out due to the threat of dehydration.
Makes you wonder 🤔.
Severe dehydration and electrolytes being imbalanced can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and death. You really need to take these type things very seriously and get medical help.

You absolutely needed to be in the hospital. That’s how serious this was. I hope Hannah that you will take him next time.
Yeah why didn't she take her husband to emergency 😢! What a loser wife!!
You should have gone to the hospital. They could have given you the kind of support that you can't get at home or in a car. But I'm glad you're all right. Sounds like a terrible experience.
Food poisoning is epically horrible. I threw up 40 times after some fresh strawberries (organic from grocery store). Ended up in ER for fluids and anti-nausea medication. Body was wrecked for a few days. Poor Shane. Throwing up is a whole nother level for him obviously. Great team work per usual, you two!!
Organic, sounds ominous as to what natural fertiliser was used.
In a situation such as what Shane went through, it's not just IV fluids that are needed, but also electrolytes which are put in the IV fluids. Electrolytes are very important in all aspects of body function, but especially heart function.
I am a huge fan! Love your content. Glad you are okay Shane. That said, I wish you had gone to the ER. I had a similar situation years ago and my doctor sent me to the hospital in an ambulance. Severe dehydration is no joke. There were other issues with me as well, but I wish next time, you don't hesitate to go to the hospital. Dare I say you are an American treasure, my friend. Looking forward to your new book. Sending you positive energy from Boulder, CO.
OMG Shane you’re so lucky you recovered at home. That was definitely a missed hospital visit. Glad to hear you’re feeling like your ol’ self again. Take care❤
Omg , that must have been so scary for you. Not knowing if you were going to get your strength back must have been dreadful.
So happy you’re on the road to recovery, your sense of humor is back. Take care.
What’s really scary is that she wants a child from him. Why? To have a physically disabled child? Or God forbid be a single mother. How long is this guy gonna live for?
Amazon sells hospital grade barf bags. It is a plastic ring and long bag that is collapsed into the ring so it packs easily in a purse or backpack. All you do it pull the bag down to extend and let it fly! I keep them in the car for the kids.
Exactly! We have a box of emesis bags for situations like this.
That happened to me after a colonic obstruction! I nearly died on my daughter's 28 birthday. So glad I lived because she recently got engaged. I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE STILL HERE SHANE!
I can’t believe you did not think to go to the hospital, with such severe dehydration and unstable blood sugar you can crash so quickly. 😳🙁
When you are that dehydrated, all you want do is close your eyes and doze. Your brain is not functioning, you cannot think straight or make decisions. It is basically up to someone else to get you to the ER.
Makes you wonder 🤔.
@@samnero387makes me wonder why she would want a child from him? To be a single mom soon? Possibility of a given birth to a physically disableded child?
I notice a lot of people in the US never seem to go to the doctor or call for help even in emergencies.

I got food poisoning decades ago and did exactly this same thing. I threw up every 15 minutes from 10pm until 8:30 the next morning. I was so exhausted that halfway through the night I was literally rolling out of bed and crawling to the toilet! My hubby worked nights so I was alone and without help. He came home at about 7am to find me crying hysterically in bed, he went to the MD office and picked up some phenergan suppositories which was the only thing that saved me. I dropped 20 pounds in one night! My heart goes out to you!

So all I can think when Hannah is talking about bringing the iced tea bottle back to Shane is in Wayne’s World in the beginning where Garth pulls out a tiny paper cup and gives it to his friend and says, “if you gotta spew, spew into this”

I got food poisoning two weeks postpartum, I was spewing from both ends, even my spit was triggering me to puke. We went to the ER because it was just so bad and my sides were burning. Almost cut my breastfeeding journey early but thankfully mustered through pumping even when I was barely able to move. My poor husband was so scared for me but lots of fluids helped, I didn’t have complete control of my bowels for a couple more days but I could hold fluids in after being discharged. It’s a very serious thing and people don’t realize it!
SHANE. Mama bear is coming out in me. YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO THE ER STRAIGHT OFF THE PLANE. Active duty nurse here. There are different kinds of hallucinations. Those that people tend to get from recreational drugs are more of visual distortions than true hallucinations (where you believe they're real).
Speaking from experience, natural hallucinations are WAY more terrifying than self-induced hallucinations. Think of the difference between choosing to drive a kids powerwheels plastic car, or being blind folded in a full sized Ferrari at top speed. But I'm very glad you made it home and Hannah was able to nurse you back to health. Love from Socal.
This is a crazy story! I'm having a hard time figuring out why there was no ER visit. Seems like a no-brainer for a physically compromised guy like Shane, for whom throwing up can be a huge choking hazard. Maybe everyone is sort of used to lurching from emergency to emergency, or maybe they didn't stop to consider how medically fragile Shane is when faced with certain illnesses. Shane, you really should have told Hannah and her mother that you needed to go to the ER. You were in the best position to judge. I'm a little mad at you about this! We almost lost you!
This is a no brainer for anyone... let alone someone with medical conditions. This can easily kill a perfectly healthy young person. It cam cause irreversible cardiac complications. It can go from 0-100 *_very quickly._*
28 times? And wife doesn’t think dehydration? Get him to ER? This is weird.
It's all click baits.
I'm so sorry this happened to Shane! Sending prayers to both of you 🙏 God bless.
Oh wow. I know that had to be scary.
I'm so glad everything worked out for ya'll. Glad to see ya'll back. I missed ya'll.
Shane, I'm glad you are feeling better, now.
Welcome back!
Oof, glad you're still with us! Saran wrap is a life saver for the most random things, isn't it? Here's some more:
- Wrap used paint brushes to keep them from drying, especially if you aren't done!
- Filthy hands while you work? Slap it on your phone ahead of time to keep it clean!
- Wrap banana stems to keep them fresh longer! Some people wrap the whole bunch.
- Traveling? Team up with zip-lock bags to keep shampoo, conditioner, or other bottled products from leaking in your luggage! Saran wrap the items, them put them together in a bag.
- Using a skin or hair treatment? Consider covering the area with wrap to trap in the product. This makes it warmer and allows the skin/hair to absorb more nutrients in a shorter amount of time.
- Fruit flies? Get the saran wrap out! An oldie but goodie: fruit fly trap!
- Saran wrap can be applied almost anywhere for faster clean up - baking station, artists paint palette, refrigerator shelves, gardening shelf, and more.
That's all I can think of for the moment.
wait, how does the fruit fly trap work? please elaborate!😮
@@dannyanderson2236 you’d put apple cider vinegar in a container cover with Saran Wrap, rubber band or tie around the top, poke smallish holes on top. The fruit flies are attracted to it and can’t escape. Pretty sure that’s what they meant 😊
@@bellaleu7782 thanks!
Thanks 👍
@@dannyanderson2236 you’re welcome, my pleasure
I’m glad to see people are finally seeing the true nature of their relationship.
I’m so sorry that you had such a bad experience. It’s good that see you back on CZcams. I hope you keep posting with better news.😅
Imagine having lungs as impaired as Shane’s. Now imagine having the night he described (vomited 30 times, hallucinating, etc.). Now superimpose Hannah’s laughter and the indifferent comment she made at 6:48 over that mental creation. It totally impugns the caregiving focus your channel has revolved around since its inception. Unironically hilarious!! lmaooooo
Alright you guys need to chill reading into things that aren't there. Shane is an adult and if he didn't want to go to the hospital, she couldn't force him.
@@marias.wainwright3481 paramedics can. Hate to say but he can't fight anyone. Would he rather be dead or alive
No disrespect meant but with the co-morbidities he should have gone to hospital IMMEDIATELY. Please remember that for next time Shane and Hannah.
Thank you for sharing so transparently. We struggle with these same things. We all grow thick skins. You guys didn’t go to ER or call 911. You did what was needed and did not freak out. Power to nurses❤ Hannah and I. Lol I am blessed with a mother like Hannah who always helps selflessly. I know how much you guys appreciate Mom.❤
Glad see you guys back
Food poisoning is the worst! Glad you, survived Shane 😂 and Joey 😂❤
I've been there. Food poisoning is the worst. The Feeling of Impending Doom sucks.
So sorry you went through that but so happy you came out of it alive!
Shane, that thought - this is how I am now, I'm weak now. That thought is terrifying. The day I turned 21, I woke up and got out of bed, and I couldn't feel or move anything below my waist. I fell over. As a person with no previous physical disability it was disorienting. And the thought - this is how my body is now, is so scary. Mine went away within an hour and I walk fine now. But I felt what you said so much.
