    I got into bikepacking for my dog's sake - so that I could keep up with her on the trails. Zora and I spent 60 days dogpacking Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and Gulf Islands in 2019. She trotted an average top speed of 7 km per hour, 20 km per day, for about 1000 km total and never needed to be carried. If your dog is athletic enough, and you're willing to go her pace, and really listen to her, you don't need a way to carry her. I just think of the bike as a way to carry all of our stuff and keep up with my dog. If anyone reading this is even considering taking their dog on a bikepacking trip, I can't recommend it strongly enough! Just be sure your dog is up to the task you're asking them to do, and monitor their health and energy levels closely because they can't tell you in words when they get a blister or need a break. And keep those pups cool - you can help keep them cool by keeping them wet. Happy trails.

    • @OmniTierra
      @OmniTierra Před 3 lety

      That is addressed in the Bikepacking.com article. We ride many km and at high speeds sometimes. So, for us a way to carry Mira is a must.

      @@OmniTierra Hi, John! I'm a big fan and somehow didn't know you had this channel, can't wait to check it out! Whether to carry or not to carry Zora has always been the question for me, range vs climbing capability right? Your setup is hands down the best I've seen, combined with Mira's attitude about the basket, she's as happy as Zora in her 4runner. When I first saw that rig I was stricken with bike envy big time! But there's also that part of me that wants to keep my bike light, at least before it's loaded lol. It's kind of a paradox for me.

    Bike camping before it was a thing. It just seemed logical but I don't have a dog in my life now but every dog I've been lucky enough to be blessed with was an adventure lover like me. Maybe my adventure cat would be interested in a trip 🙂. I ride a mid-fat all mountain/trail full susser. I have no problems some bemoan not using specialized bikepacking bikes but with my Thule pack and peddle pannier rack on the rear triangle and my awesome homade version of one on the fork I'm happy with my rig. I just got a free sewing machine so I'm making some custom bags for my frame. Can't wait for cooler weather here in Fl for the next trip Cheers

    • @dickflinghammer58
      @dickflinghammer58 Před 3 lety

      I forgot to add a lot of the areas I ride have feral hogs. They can root up a large area and riding through it with a hard tail is just that🤪. Problem is the rack on the rear triangle kinda deadens the suspension action plus I weigh only 155 .

    Great vid! After watching Duzer, John & Mira, I am seriously thinking about investing in Surly Big Dummy and touring... even without a dog, these long tail bikes are da bomb!
    One thing I would be worried about if I had a rear cart would be cars not seeing it - so low to the ground and drivers really only expect the cyclist and nothing connected behind (I even see this will cars/trucks towing - drivers only expect the first auto). Keep on keepin' on!

    What basket is being used at 8:34? My dog is 30lbs. I believe a basket like in this video is best suited for my puggle. He should be able to lay down and sit-up confidently. Plus, I should be able to leash him so he doesn't jump off, but I prefer not to escape a crash. Finally, what bike is the best fit for this? Should I go rigid or hardtail?

    Thank you so much John & Mira! I'm an experienced bikepacker and am getting a pup in a week or so, a heeler/aussie mix. I was concerned about getting a dog because I didn't want to stop or limit my training/riding but seeing what you have done is inspiring. I'm probably going to get the Burley CoHo but am wondering about bikes. I don't see anyone dog packing with a double suspension and am wondering why. I have a Fatbike (I live in the Gunnison country so our winters are long) and also a steel and carbon gravel bike. The Fatbike is heavy, of course, but I think it may be the best option. Thoughts? I'd also like to use the steel gravel bike. I guess carbon is out of the question with a trailer. I read that somewhere anyway. Is that accurate? But I haven't seen any dog packing users of gravel bikes. Is there also a reason for that? Any help appreciated. So enjoy your vids. Thank you.

    State-side Amish don’t always/often/ever vaccinate dogs so be cautious in area where these communities exist too.

    Do not be unprepared to kill an aggressive animal in defense.
    Oh! 😱
    But then we have to consider your Canadian blood line. 🥴

    Man… call it an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think dogs belong on back country adventures unless it’s their trained job (sled dog etc)
    I see so many folks BC skiing, camping, etc on back country trips… I just can’t get behind it.
    Maybe it’s just not for me and my dog, I just don’t think I could handle the worst case scenario if my buddy was with me too. Planning for the worst is part of BC traveling.

      My dog loves to go camping. She goes absolutely wild with lively excitement. Jumps and runs around like she's on cocaine. xD
      Have standard procedures in check, and take a step at a time.

      Well, it's true that house pets don't belong in the backcountry and it's not responsible to drag them along, but working breeds like Mira and my sled dog Zora will never be satisfied with a comfortable city life, they literally live for adventure. Each individual is responsible for determining if their dog belongs in the backcountry, and preparing for emergencies.

    Useless, it wobbles from side to side as you peddle.
