This song isn’t really about anything specific besides just the loss of innocence and learning to accept the world as it really is

So glad you reacted to this. This is honestly my favorite song ever on one of my all time favorite albums. You can’t go wrong with any AnCo but this is really their best to me. If you wanted more I would recommend listening to Comfy In Nautica by Panda Bear (a member of anco and the drummer on this track)

Zach Hill (of Death Grips and Hella) said he would have loved to collab with Animal Collective, and knowing this song, that would have been sick if that actually happened

Crazy how things sounded back when people killed elks with makeshift bows.

They are so good at cover art. I think its because they really visualize the music. Its also like how the music is so hard to describe, we all have to make visual connections to starry night skies and kaleidoscopes to describe it

For something easy to listen, get Merriweather Post Pavilion
For something that's poppy but experimental, get Strawberry Jam
For some freak folk, get Feels
For something that's folktronica but noisier, get Sung Tongs
If you're extremely adventurous, get Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. It has that song as its climax

its about growing up and losing your childhood. this album came out in 2000. the track penny dreadfuls was written when they were 16. the top 4 albums are generally considered to be Sung Tongs, Feels, Strawberry Jam, and Merriweather Post Pavilion aka the golden age from ~04-09
you should listen to What Would I Want? Sky, from the 2009 EP Fall Be Kind. the song contains the only officially licensed sample of the Grateful Dead.

Subscribing for these Animal Collective reactions. They get very little reaction videos on CZcams. Their catalog is so varied, yet still recognizable. Wonderful!

i agree with what you said about album art. i think when the album art matches the theme of the music they both elevate each other and put ideas in your head that never would have occurred to you from just the picture or music by themselves.

I remember forcing my friend on a roadtrip through Italy in my Alfa 33 to listen to it completely, the Alps in front. Great times. I bought the album today on vinyl. Greetings from Germany!

my favorite part about these reaction videos is also getting to listen to the song but it feels like i'm listening to it with someone and its their first time just talking to me about it

also just wana mention they recorded this entire album on a purposefully left untuned piano

they weren't known as animal collective until 2003's Here Comes the Indian (renamed Ark years later because offensive) and before that their albums where released under different names but later retroactively became credited to the band animal collective, this album being released under Avey Tare and Panda Bear, and the album Campfire Songs originally being a self titled thing. Anyways, the cover art is taken from a really interesting poetry book for children called "stars to-night: verses new and old for boys and girls" and the use of that art is beautiful given the album is all about losing your childhood innocence after growing up as well as realizing later in life how dysfunctional things were then and how it makes later life harder

Listen to Hollinndagain by Animal Collective. Very experimental tribal jams. Definitely not for everyone since I've never even seen a reaction to it but it's worth a listen.

Also I’d recommend pickup up the album centipede Hz it’s so psychedelic. But for something more relaxed I’d go for feels. Also strawberry jam, Water Curses EP, Fall be Kind EP, and Merriweather post pavilion. But my first suggestion would be centipede hz if you like the psychedelic rock/space rock aspect of them

The last leg of this track sounds so triumphant and melancholic at the same time.

In terms of Songcraft, I really think it’s one of their best. And this is off of the first album! Two out of the four members participated on this one. Also really dig the Sleep in your intro. I’m into the heavy psych/stoner stuff myself. 🤘🏻🛸🤘🏻

Trying to decide which one album to buy is difficult because yes, they're all so good, but they're also all so different. I suppose Merriweather post Pavillion is the biggest crowd pleaser but I think strawberry jam is my favorite of all. Love that you're giving them a go! They can be difficult for some to sit through but once you get it, you're so hooked. Great reaction vid!

The only Alvin I can think of that it might be a reference to is Alvin Lucier, who made a lot of experimental music in the '60s and '70s. Dave jokingly name-dropped Alvin Lucier's recording "I Am Sitting in a Room" on the band's fan forum back in the day.
It's a pretty cool recording, if you haven't heard it yet it could be a fun reaction video... although now I'm looking it up, the shortest recording is about 15 minutes long. Hmm.
