Also I'm sorry for the poor quality throughout the movie! I know it really sucks, I have no idea how it went like that, sorry folks.
"He sells clarinets to the kids"
Never had one lesson...
“Incredible. One of the worst performances of my career and I never doubted it for a second.”
I like at 2:30 when Harold says "Hill?" to avoid suspicion
totally missed that
I love how the yes sir part matches up with the train moving, that was always my favorite part
One of the main points of this entire song was the fact that what they were saying went along with the sounds and movements of the train.
Yeah I noticed that, I just think that the yes sir part is the coolest. Thanks for telling me though!
@@echadwick3916 nice rhythm.😊
3:17 - that closeup on Hill's smug smile is actually an improvement over how they filmed the Preston version.
I'm glad they did the song uncut (unlike the Preston version) but bringing in the orchestra halfway through ruins the effect. The WHOLE POINT of the number is to make music out of idle chatter.
It's like the director didn't trust the material.
@@ericgrunin Wadya talk, wadya talk, wadya talk!!!
The problem is that Robert Preston totally defined that role. He is that guy. Nobody else is even close. I've rarely seen a role that was so defined by one person that it's absolutely pointless to even try to remake it.
Ray Banger It’s true. He owned that role both on Broadway and in the original movie.
Just watched this version for the first time. Preston had more charisma than the entire cast here combined.
@@martinepstein9826 Wadya talk, wadya talk, wadya talk !!!
100%. I've also felt that way about Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady".
Hugh Jackman: Hold my beer!
I can't decide which is better. I have seen both multiple times and there are things that I think each did better than each other but I still love both
You're right! I was introduced to this version first, then watched the original on my own a few years later. I can understand being a purist and wanting to preserve something as dynamic as the inimitable performance of Robert Preston, but for me, I just enjoy this one sooo much more. The supporting cast, the costumes, choreography, and tempo of the remake buoy up Matthew Broderick, as opposed to one performer carrying the entire show in the original. Shirley Jones was also very good, but I just enjoy Kristin's singing sooo much more. One thing about the original that feels less than the remake is the casting of Buddy Hackett as Marcellus; I always felt like that guy was supposed to be a right-hand man, a lieutenant of sorts; kinda like Will Scarlett to Robin Hood. The Marce in the remake fit that role much better. The original is still the superior film, when taken based solely on the merit of the title character, however, I own the dvd of this version and can honestly say that I made the better choice for myself. I say see both versions and decide for yourself which one does it better for you. Robert Preston is THE MAN, but it's the remake all the way for me as the more satisfying film. Thanks for posting!
Matthew Broderick Can’t Act. He is a dead body
I wish people still dressed this way.
Me too
Now people are incredibly idiotic because of stupid trends like Gucci gang and tide pods
Yeah I really wanna wear knickerbockers and...overalls. Dress normally
Nothing’s stopping you.
@@AKAdaJoker14 Trenchcoats and Fedora Hats the excellent touch for the Winter.
I was just saying that to me please thanks for telling me that I have to go to the bathroom and get my hair done earlier and I can go to the store 😔 I am trying calling me and I can go to the store and get it tomorrow and then go back to work tomorrow if you can get a chance to the store for me to get it tomorrow and I would like to go to the store Robbie Hagberg

I’m sorry, I just love that part for whatever reason.
A really excellent remake, which is unusual!

My mother played Mrs. Schinn in our local production back in the late 70's early 80's. What a hoot, I love this play!
This is one of the best things I have ever seen in my life, not the remake (I like the original better) but this opening scene. Some scenes in this remake I feel are better executed than in the original and this is one of them.
Try listening to each with your eyes closed. In the 62 movie you can clearly hear each character. In this one, I don't think that you can.
I disagree
Sorry. The Robert Preston version is still tops with me.
Copy that many times over.
George Strum Don't be sorry if you're honest.
Yes, I don’t like the choreography in this version or that the camera changes from outside to inside, to the cards to the cigar every 5 seconds
Performance yes, but this version is closer to the original script.
@@Yannis1a You're right, too many cuts to the bottom of "Harold Hill's" face. We're not supposed to figure out that he's on the train until the end. It's a distraction.
That's the same suitcase from the 1962 film!
Indeed it is!!!!!!! didn't realize it until just now!
Andrew Crumb I wonder how they found that.
Implies that it was lost. Collectors will kill their own children to get hold of items like that.
The original opening scene is far more rhythmic and more effective.
Additional music during the excellent vocals seems too much and just... overkill for such a great musical number
I disagree.
When I first watched this with my chorus I couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole train ride. That is truley amazing. I wonder how many takes that must of took.
"Hamilton was the first rap musical"

No it was not. The original music Man is from the 60s and it's faster
"Cigarettes Illegal in this state!"

This is a really difficult song to learn at first...but after you get it...it is really fun to perform!
I did that play

Omg finally found the movie :0

very clever the film starts. Love the idea of the sing along, during the train moves along....

Matt Pressman Pressman like you XD just kidding
I'm just gonna say it: That black guy is really cool. He really worked Rock Island.
I feel like the fellow from the older movie had a stronger voice for the role, kind of the same for some of the others too, not as booming of voices as some of the older fellows.
Though might just also be bias having seen that one first long ago and even recently when I watched it again.
Personally I found the extra verses they added to Rock Island to be very tired and overall detrimental to the natural energy of the song. Plus having the same salesman that adds the "no it ain't but he doesn't know the territory." contribute a verse sends a mixed message that is entirely unnecessary (does that character think things have changed for salesmen like the rest or not?).
However, the way the salesmen race after Hill once they realize he's the source of their recent miseries only to have him smirk and tip his hat to them at the platform? Wonderful addition.
I LOVE the train scene! In my choir, we do some scenes from this movie, and this is one of them. P.S. I play Harold Hill.
what an excellently written scene. wish i could've done this one
i remember when this came out! It was great!!!
We're doing this play at school! I love the original and this version of the movie! I'm so glad this is on youtube!
My brother and I used to sing this song all the time when I was 7 and he was 12! We can still sing the majority of it. It's really a fun song XD
I remember this!!! Ooooh good times, good times.
I did it last year and still know all diolouge/lyrics/instrumental!!
This movie is UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC! Matthew Broderick is amazing, his facial expressions keep me glued to the screen. His dancing and moves have my daughters out of their seats getting down every time! Definatley an instant classic in our house. Thanks for uploading it, we've been searching a couple years for this flick!
As much as I don’t like musicals, I have a few exceptions. This is one of them.
Still one of the best opening numbers in music theater.
I luv that for at school we did the music man as our play, and now I hav ALL of the songs stuck in my head. I already miss singing all the songs!!!
I wish my arguments where musical like this one. They would be MUCH longer AND entertaining.
I love the extra verses in Rock Island
Mike Hruby these are the lyrics from the original Broadway version
@@marlzach I thought there was something missing when I last watched this scene from the original. I could've sworn I had more "wheredyagetit"s in my high school production.
Love the cameo and running shots of Canadian Pacific 1057!!
My School, today, was the last day of The Music Man as our Spring Musical
that is so freaking cool how they went to the chugging sound of the train!!! and the yesssssssssssssssssssir when they slowed down :D
Personally, this song CRUSHES any rap from "Hamilton!"
Tyson Cheshire personally you're FUCKING WRONG COME AT ME
Hit Now
Hey hey! no need for that. I posted this before I got to know the music of Hamilton. I take it back. Although this is cool, it doesn't beat Hamilton.
Tyson Cheshire maybe the song but not the singing
Flint 25 woah be careful
A bunch of angered Hamilton fans are gonna come at you now
#newsflash you can like whoever you want, there’s no right or wrong answer as to who’s better
Thanks so much for posting this.
they cant make music like this in 2023! This was back in the day when they got talent.
I don't know why everyone is complaining so much! I think they did very well, the actors for the salesman on the train are very good too
you are preaching to the choir. amen!
yes, sir, yesssss sirrrr...
i saw that version on the big screen twice when it first came out.
when the man dances certainly boys what else the piper pays him! yessssssssssir yesssssssssssir yessssssssssir yesssssir! when the man dances certainly boys what else! the piper pays him yessssssir yesssir! but he doesn't know the territory!
I started watching this movie in school, my band class.
love the first song, so catchy
I grew up on this version of the movie so it will always be better in my mind.
"But he doesn't know the territory!" *FWAP!*
My favorite line in Rock Island
I played Prof Hill in my high school play years ago. I love this play and movie!!
I LOVE Music Man and is going to be in it!!!!!!! and and THANK YOU FOR PUTTING IT ON!!!!!!
its AWSOME!!!
my music teacher showed this to us today and I'm like okay I have to see this again this is awesome
lilly denim watch the original 1962 version. In fact watch the whole original movie. Preston is a charismatic goldmine.
I was in the Music Man and all I can say is you do this song till you get SUPER SICK of it. hehehe :)
Hill? Hill! Hill! Hill? Hill? Hill Hill NO!! haha mah favorite part:)
This is so fun to watch because we're doing this for our school play :)
rapping for the white man XD lol
but seriously, they did a great job in this scene! i couldn't pull of this tongue twister song.
I ripped the DVD on to my computer and then opened it up in Windows Media Player and separated the movie into parts and then uploaded them on here.
My school just put on this musical! It's was so cute! Now lets watch the really thing ^.^
I have never seen this music, so thanks for the upload. It's about time I do! I love Musicals but yet haven't seen this movie... geez. that shall change now ^_^
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING EVERYWHERE FOR THIS VERSON!! THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!
Man, this brings back memories
I'm a band kid! My Dad is voice #8 in Wells Fargo Wagon! I'm so proud!
I loved doing this show at CYT!!! It was soooo fun doing this scene!
i love this version too, don't worry. i also like the robert preston version. they're just different :)
Ferris Bueller!! I love that and this movie!
my music class was playing this movie today( another version but same songs) i love the beginning on the train :D
This is my favorite scene.
Thanks so much for putting this on here! I am doing this for a school play and needed to watch the movie. Thanks so much! ♫

I love this movie.
I admit this version is pretty good. Although I prefer the older version (because Robert Preston and Shirley Jones are gold), Matthew and Kristin play the parts well

When the music kicks in!
i love this movie so much. Kristin Chenoweth is what totally makes this movie amazing. thanks so much for posting!
i just finished this play with byt it was tons of fun!!!
I wonder if the guy ever found out what they were talking ? lol
Yeah I loved Broderick in the Broadway production of The Producers
but Robert Preston is and will always be
the music man.
Over on one of the original ones (from 1962), somebody commented that this song sets the tone for the entire movie. I've not seen the Broderick version, but a minute and a half into this clip, I can see I haven't missed anything.
You hit it right on the ioway nose, 100%. Tx, Tom
we are doing this in my school. Opening night is today and I'm Alma Hix one of the pick-a-little ladies soooo excited
thanks A WHOOOLE LOT for posting! thank yoU!
thanks so much for posting this!
Y'know, I never even knew Broderick did this. I find myself genuinely curious, even though I'm sure the Preston version will prove superior. I believe I shall have to give "The Music Man"...a try.
I remember watching this in music
I grew up with the Robert Preston version, and he was the original Harold Hill on Broadway. Nobody else can fill his shoes in this role, in my opinion.
I agree, there's not enough energy in this version compared to the old version and even some high school plays.
If people are going to compare the two why watch this. It's different if people like both but it's annoying that people are like "The original is better" but yet your still watching this movie. Stop comparing the two and if you like this version just watch it and if you don't then don't come here and say it and just stick with the original.
i love this movie
this is dope
I must agree with my fellow you-tubers. Robert Preston is the one and only quintessential Music Man. Nothing against Matthew--he's a great actor, but only RP can be the Music Man.
I had no idea they did a remake of that movie.
I love this version because the guy playing Charlie has a strong resemblance to a good friend of mine.
i love this scene. and the song.
Nice Train. Looks like a Live action version of The Big Strong Engine from The Little Engine that Could.
That voice, holy crap...its Adult Simba!
the first time i heard this was actually from a CD i checked out at the library one time, i realized it was different from the one i use to see, and when i first saw this i noticed that it was (don't hate me for this) a lot more fun ^^
GUYS, stop knocking this version. The original movie will NEVER leave our memories, but both versions are out and there will be more to come. LEAVE IT ALONE. Do you think the producers read these? THEY DON'T, SO DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
The railroad used is the South Simcoe Railway in Ontario, Canada....
I watched this movie mostly because I am a Kristin Chenoweth fan.
