My late husband served in Vietnam, USAF.He to,d me of being called a "baby killer" and not being able to find work so he left the US to work overseas in the Marshal Islands and eventually returned to the US. He never made a big deal about his service and he always squirmed when people would thank him for his service. When he passed I made sure to have the American Legion there at his memorial service to fold his burial flag and play Taps. Legion Riders were there to do a flag line outside the church. I wanted everyone in that church to know he was a veteran. God bless this gentleman in court and for the Judge who supports military servicemen and women.

My step dad is a Vietnam vet disabled from agent orange. Absolutely breaks my heart hearing the stories about the way he was treated even by his own family after coming home. Weather you agree or disagree with the war, vets SHOULD NEVER be treated with anything but respect.
Correct. They only did what they were told to do. I wasn’t in Vietnam but served in that time. We were told not to travel in uniform because of the way people in the military were treated at that time.

I walked up to a Vietnam Veteran (because he had a ball cap on displaying it) and told him, "Thank you for your service in Vietnam and I'm glad you made it back alive." I shook his hand and walked off. Then a few minutes later he was crying and his wife was hugging him. In my heart I believe I did the right thing. These Vietnam Vets went through PURE HELL! This bullshit war murdered at least 58,000 soldiers all because of the "Gulf of Tonkin Incident". Which the U.S Government admitted to lying about.

As a retired man with 22 years service I'd like to thank this Judge for his comments and care. This is a man who has a heart and sees the good in each and every person. We need more like him sitting on the bench, would be a much better world. Time to stop the hating and spread more love and grace. God bless you Judge.
Indeed. It's not just the service abroad, but good men doing good things at home too. One day, someone will pay a fine for the judge, for the same reason, because on his honourable service to the rest of us.

He doesn't treat them as criminals but as humans. We need judges like him all over the world... He's so kind and understanding
For traffic infractions maybe. But there's no way he could be a criminal judge. He is way too soft on people. All he does is listen to excuses and make excuses for running red lights and speeding. If your mom was killed by someone running a red light I bet you wouldn't be so accepting of their excuses. I wonder how I manage to drive for 10 years without a red light ticket.
That's because they are not criminals, just regular people who had violated traffic rules, a judge who is in charge of murderers and rapes wouldn't be that kind, or make those "funny small talks", what this judge does is not wrong, but it isn't a thing that applies everywhere, he just happen to have the right conditions to function that way

I've seen two things in common in Vietnam vets and that are: humility and honesty/dignity (they make no excuses whatsoever). Huge respect to them...
And hats off to the ever compassionate Judge Caprio...

@@user-jm8ri8kb4k The most common thing was that they were called "baby killers" for their alleged killing of innocent children and babies. Notice I said alleged. Many of these men were mere boys themselves when they were sent off by their country to fight what amounted to a political war.
Same with my grandfather who was in Korea and nam. He wouldn’t say much about veitnam he did tell me he did a lot of things he wasn’t proud of

@@stell4you it's not a show. Judge Judy, and all the other courts you see on TV are shows. Caught in Providence is not. What you see, is actual court proceedings. The producers pick the best stories from these proceedings, and put them on TV.

I’m in Canada and as soon as I heard this gentleman served in Vietnam from 1966-68 I literally broke out in tears. The exchange between him and Judge Capio was heartfelt. All the best to all of you in Rhode Island from a regular guy in Calgary Alberta Canada 🇨🇦.

As a 72 yr old Vietnam vet i appreciate this judge, true we weren't treated with respect when we returned home but i like to think and believe that with that we helped open the door that America would treat our veterans with the respect they so deeply deserve for the grace of God and veterans is what gives this country it's blessings. Some could tell horrible things they saw and did that i believe God did not intend one to see and do however war causes one to do and see those thing's, so with that being said God bless the veterans!!!

@@theiboy Because general people had made up mind that conflict in other countries were none of their business. They were scared of two world wars and the deaths with it. That is why they protested against the government there. Army personnel were shamed for taking part there.
What a humble veteran. He didn't boast about his service or himself being a vet, he didn't ask for any special treatment or entitlement, he only ask for more time so that he could gather enough to pay for his mistake. True humble patriot! And the judge is a true caring person. God tells us not to judge others, but I believe He allows this man judge others. God bless these people!

after talking to some nam vets What I came to realize is that they don’t really want to talk about it.

@@AIA1990 that's also true, it's not easy for them to talk. PTSD is not something easy to talk. Even some ww2 vets are still suffering from it.
As my father, a Vietnam Marine veteran, would say, “Don’t mean nothin.”
This is the person they should be putting on the supreme court. He's fair, kind, and extremely respectful.
My only worry with that would be he'ld be surrounded by vultures and because of that his qualty of life would be greatly reduced. That being said your absolutely right.

@@johnossmann7036 Sure. I will tell you again. $78 is equal to $642.71 today, plus all housing, food and necessities was paid for. Adding that it would be an income in access of $2000/ month. On top of that they got help with tuition costs as well numerous benefits with housing, healthcare, loans, pension and many others. This after serving only 1 year. So yes this offered a good wage and numerous benefits that you could reap for your entire life.

Agreed mate, we don't treat our vets well, we have charities that cater for them, what the feck is that all about, the government should take care of everything they need.

@@PeterJPickles I spent time in the care of combat stress. Wonderful work done by them, but why does it have to be a charity to provide this care? Politicians have a lot to answer for.

I love how this judge leads by example. He rules by the spirit of the law, with compassion, instead of the letter of the law.
To be truthful, he is using the letter of the law. Legislators create the law, but it's up to the discretion of the judges to interpret the law and execute it.
A wise man (yes there is one out there.) once said, rules are for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools. This judge understands that saying.
He’s dealing with minor traffic violations all day. Not huge crimes. And these people aren’t criminals either, just average people looking to revoke a simple ticket. That allows him to be this lenient.
I like how he didn't drop the case, but he gave him a bit of a break. Everyone makes mistakes, so he let him off easy, that's nice.
My dad told me when I was growing up, that the difference between a great police officer and a bad one is compassion. I believe the same could be said for every profession, or even all of humanity. Judge Caprio is a compassionate human. Respect!

I'm told the ex- officers in my family were like this. Unfortunately they could not stay and change things from the inside, and yet, something is changing because I have met a couple kind people in the force that treated me with empathy and just did their jobs. I'm not sure I should judge people by their profession, busted system or not.

My father was 82nd airborne and 173rd in Vietnam. When he got home he was spit on, housewives would tell their children to set off fireworks while he worked on his car so he’d hit his head on the roof. The respect this judge showed is amazing.
Nobody can even imagine what the veterans went through in that war! My respect.

You saw this man flinch the moment the judge brought up the treatment they got when they came home. That clearly hurt him more than he's prepared to admit on camera.
Indeed. When they deserved respect and gratitude, many of them were mocked and harassed for participating in a conflict they didn't begin and were essentially forced (drafted) to join. I've never been in the military (I'm far too much of a wimp), but feel the men and women who serve in every capacity is deserving of my appreciation and esteem.

I just stumbled on these videos today and they blew my mind! This judge is an amazing and compassionate human being and I wish more people in positions of power would take note.

These veterans are so different if we compare to those veterans who sits on the Late Night Shows and brags about their actions. My deepest respect for him.
I respect all veterans. Even those who brag about their stories of combat.
Ptsd or just war in general effects people differently. Some just loose their grip on being calm, some bottle it up or some somehow are able to get over it.
It is how you know if someone is telling the truth or not. Someone that has "seen stuff" or "done stuff" doesn't talk about it.

I went with my parents to pick up a family member from the air port after Vietnam war. It’s a memory that is unforgettable !

I can't help but shed a few tears whenever I see the kindness of Judge Caprio....
Here in the UK I’ve 20yrs service,wounded twice in combat and apart from a war pension I’m not entitled to any benefits, I wouldn’t qualify for local housing.
We don’t get any special treatment for healthcare and shop discounts are not obligatory.
We never get any form of recognition and I would say the home-coming hostilities that Vietnam vet got is on par what UK veterans get on a daily basis.
It’s nice to see someone appreciates a veterans service it’s such a shame it’s not in the UK.

@SABOO BRAT military is not well loved generally in Europe. To too many, military reminds them of the old imperialism Europe has spent generations trying to live down
Due to NATO protection and the umbrella provided to our own allies by the massive US military, many European populations have forgotten how important their own military is. Sadly the UK doesn't appear to be an exception

I almost cried watching this. It's fantastic to see someone in the government showing real gratitude to our veterans. It's also very nice to see a judge that treats people like humans rather than treating them like they're beneath them. We all make mistakes. A badge or a gavel doesn't change that. At the end of the day any person can make a mistake and I respect people who realize that.
This was a very touching one. 😭 I hope there are more judges like Judge Caprio.❤
