I think this is the first time I'm seeing David doing a video on NAS. Excited to see this series. I would like to see a video in this series on how to expand storage on the same NAS (eg. expanding from 2 2TB HDD's to 2 8TB and restoring the data in the higher capacity HDD's ).
I have 15 of these beasts and I love them. Businesses actually pay me to install them! It's incredible how many purposes just a single unit can fulfill. The high-availability features coupled with the UPS service is essential in medical and law practices.

I have a Synology DS1621+ and its main purpose is to store and host my Plex library. It's much more than a NAS it's a storage server.

I know this is a basic setup video, but I think in a follow up video it would be good to show people how to setup admin and non-admin users. For example, I’d create “David_Admin” and “David” users. Use the admin account to set up and manage with no shared folder access. Then setup the users with shared folder access but no access to change settings or any other apps that user doesn’t need. Then use the non-admin accounts to connect from computers and other devices
I am looking so much forward to receive my NAS tonight. I've seen this video twice and after that I'm sure I can easily set it up. When the parcel comes, I'll just start this video again and go through the steps. I'll end up feeling that my valuable data are safe.
I love my synology nas drives, and I use the seagate Ironwolf hard drives! both companies have great warranties and customer service! thanks for another great video
Love my Synology. Active Backup for Business is amazing. I backup my machines, and VM's with it, and it's perfect. Surveillance Station is awesome.
I'm just about to get 2 for work, and plan on doing HA, and they'll be backing up the whole office.
Funny that you came out with this video. I've had a very 'Synology' weekend. On friday I had to sync a client's Synology to S3 since they use the synology as a low latency cache for large files. Saturday I got a great deal from an old client on a used DS1819+ (the previous model of the 8 bay one that you showed) and today I'm migrating data from my synology RS815 to the new one while watching this video lol. One nice point to point out about SHR2 is that it alllows you to add more disks in the future. Happy Sunday!
I have been using synology for 15 years+ label your drives, 1-8 or 1-12 whichever nas you have and if your nas dies or you want to upgrade from an 8 to a 12 just put them in the new one in the same order and it boots up just like the old one. their systems are amazing.

Synology is really nice stuff. I use their enterprise storage at customers and I have one myself. The plus version is even better with the snapshot capability and active backup for business. Really great stuff.. thanks for the video!

~2.5 years into my 6 bay synology nas!! 100% reliable, easy to use interface, and haven't really had to do much. Its more affordable than a full unraid server build. The downside is the cpu can be somewhat limited in a lot of models, and you are somewhat limited by what you can run because of that (mainly multiple virtualization OS's, but synology does support docker). But for my use case that has never even been an issue with what I use it for. Highly recommended. My 1 piece of ADVICE is get the largest model you can afford, you can ALWAYS add more drives later and just start with 3 or 4. My 6 bay is great and I only use 4 slots (1 drive is redundant) and i want to go to 6 drives (2 redundant) but I wish i had a 10+ bay. the larger bay models also have more powerful CPUs which benefits that aspect as well.

Many years ago, I had a 4 bay rack mount Synology NAS at my school, the RS812. It was a solid enough unit, but then I hit an issue where the unit would lock up and become totally unresponsive on the network and only a power cycle would restore it temporarily. Switching to the 2nd network port didn't help either, so the issue was with something else internally. By that time the warranty had expired, so had to limp along until we got a QNAP unit. I was bummed when the RS812 died as I really did like Synology's DSM at the time. I grew to love the QNAP replacement unit, until it died a number of years later with its own set of problems.
There is a serious metastasis problem with Synology.
Several years ago I bought one on their NAS, thinking this would be sufficient. Now I'm up to four machines. I don't know how many I will be forced to buy down the line!

I have been using these for a while now as the onsite Veeam repository for my clients VMware backups. I use one of these for onsite and a Veeam cloud provider for offsite. This gives a hands off backup solution that is monitored via emails. Just don't join the Veeam server or NAS to the domain and use really hard passwords on both. That way if ransomware hits the domain they don't have access to the backups. Plus the offsite provider has backups of your backups so there are several opportunities to restore.

Great video David! Well, it's may be good start of series about NAS (e.g. TrueNAS and Synology) with VLANs, bonding/link aggregation, adding routing daemons in NAS network subsystem for ospf or even bgp, high available NAS with some kind of VRRP or kind of MCLAG )))
I use Synology more then 12 years. Changed through this time 3 times to newer Hardware and Drive-Extension. Ride 1 for secure Data. VPN for out of Home connection into my home network. NFS for Windows and Apple Drive Share and real time Synchronisation. Next to change a disk drive, i never had any problem. DSM 7 is a easy management tool. Yes, I like it.

Nice, I'm a long time Synology user too. I have Ubiquiti cameras and use the Synology surveillance software.
The only real issue is if the NAS is stolen or the home burns down.
My next step is to have another NAS in another location, and having them duplicate data.

I just set up a ds1821+. 8 drive bays. I'm using SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid), that way I can add drives over time instead of buying all the drives at once and one drive acts as redundancy. Adding a drive does take a long time. Even adding one 16tb drive to expand the storage pool takes over 2 days. This setup will be for a Plex server.
Hi David. You should mention that NAS is really expencive compared to cloud storage. If you do the math, you can often get 10 years of cloud storage for the same price as a NAS. Great video by the way 😍😍

I have a NAS DS1520+ with 5 drives which I’ve had for about a year now and enjoyed it as well making my life much easier to library all my media. Having moved home a few times now and had lots of Music, CD’s going back like 25+ years I needed a much better way to library and store all my media locally and not in lots of boxes. As well reliable store all my personal data and not in the public cloud but my own personal network cloud. I’ve had no real issues with my NAS DS.

I had 918+ for a while, and was hesitant in upgrating DSM from 6.x to 7.x version. I don't have a backup big enough for this box, in case the upgrade doesn't work. But seeing your DSM 7.0 working nicely, I'm more confident in the upgrade.
I did not have any issues upgrading from DSM 6 to 7 on DS918+ except I think I had to manually turn on SMB support for older version so that some of my home network devices could access shares, and it did inform me about this either right before or after the upgrade. I recently had a situation where the NAS would not turn on, the blue light would blink once but not turn on. It turned out to be a failed power brick, even though the green LED on the brick was still on, the brick was not outputting enough power to start the system. I replaced it with a $20 third party PSU from Amazon, so far so good. So, if you ever find the unit won't turn on, start with the power brick.

Great Video, I have had my DS918+ running for 3 years straight without issues. I don't like that they are trying to force people to now buy Synology hard drives. I've got shucked WD Easystores in mine. Only cost me $190 for each 14TB HDD. My nas is a Plex server, family cloud, and I also self host lots of docker containers. Its the best/most useful purchase I've ever had. I also got 2x 250gb NVME SSDs installed for read/write cache, 16GB of RAM, and a APC BR1500MS2 UPS(absolutely must have).

I use for years now Synology NAS and i am verry verry satisfied with Synology products. Only it is still very unclear which additional memory expansions in the Synology + models. You have to be very careful about which memory banks are accepted by Synology. Docker for a Fortianalyzer, for example, is not recommended. I also manage my IP cameras with the Surveillance Station, which is a good solution. And security is also very well organized. I'm a fan ;)
I've had a DS1511+ for years. Never misses a beat. Had a drive fail once, just swapped it out for a larger drive and it rebuilt with zero downtime.
Why RAID1 rather than SHR, David? Do you just want to steer clear of their proprietary solution?

Synology is awesome, except that I've had two DS1817 (8 drive models) have total board failures out of warranty, one with a defective power switch that had to be replaced as well as another with a blown power supply. I also have two DS416's that have never have a failure. This just gives me doubts that all models don't have the same reliability since all four DS1817's have failed and none of my two DS416 have.
Mixed Drives (Beyond Raid/SHR/QNAP), bit-rot ZFS vs BTRFS and other solutions (Synology said they were coming up with their own) and ECC memory. Also, amount of simultaneous users for VMs, Plex, can the NAS handle VMs with Unity engine editor, and speed differences between RAID 5, 50, and 10 and how much is overkill. Finally, it would be great to see your mid-level recommendation. Something that at least supports RAID 5 and possibly supports RAID 50. Even some info on upgradability. Thanks for the info!
you can easily counter data being sold if you send your data to any of the cloud services with cryptomator first. then its all encrypted.

Synology is a rock solid NAS. Lots of good options in the NAS market. I favor the fire proof, ioSafe products.

And heres why: I was wondering why you would deploy multiple Synology NAS Systems in your private Network and not build a NAS from scratch i.e. TrueNAS/unRAID or even proxmox.
While I'm sure theres a plethora of reasons for Synology one could argue that it goes both ways.

Interesing that you chose RAID 1 over Synology's SHR1. Can I ask why you made that choice as SHR1 allows for drive expansion without having to start again if you slot in higher capacity drives.

What about if you have one 4TB Seagate NAS disk full with data and buying Synology NAS and the some 4TB Seagate disk?
I will loose after installing two hard drive all information from already full hard disk I think.

I dont think you can just put the drives into another NAS? Also you may now be able to get the same model NAS at the time. I have looked around for this info and what I have found has not been that great. I think you could provide a good guide to this very important topic.. Thanks

Dave do some quick videos on setting up a Plex server and also creating a backup of your NAS onto AWS therefore you have a local and cloud stored versions of your data.
Being an opensource advocate I did a self-build nas with supermicro mini-itx and truenas just for zfs. If i remember correctly synology does butterfs on top of mdraid - is it possible to do zfs on synology ?
So the other ethernet port can be used to share with my other computer "the NAS drive"

I currently have this same first world problem - not enough local disk space. Was pondering a synology NAS. This is a good solution though since RAID is not a backup, you face the challenge of a double fault or something else where the array is otherwise trashed (less likely but still possible). If it wasn't so expensive, I'd say forget the NAS and get a flash SAN instead 😁For offsite, I have the most critical stuff copied to a luks encrypted volume on an ubuntu instance at a linode datacenter some 300 miles away. RAID 0, IMHO, is an oxymoron.
Some quick comments. You usually are very deep in tech but this was kinda on the surface. And the security focus was kinda lost compare to other content.
- You should explain SHR, and why you didn’t select it
- you should explain the security risk associated with quick connect and other options.
- you should explain why it’s good to create a separate user (not admin) for file access in windows.
- you should explain why you have a + series and what it has over a j

I'd be interested to see info about date transfer speeds e.g. I understand you can bond the two gigabit channels together.
Idk if you will read this but I was wondering if there is a way to make a type of keylogger to record when external things are connected to your pc. If so It would be amazing if you made a video on it.
One tip: Never use the same vendor disks, merge it, because if one vendor has a fault, all your disk will fail. I learnt that in the hard way ;-), one NAS with the same vendor disks, there was a fault in thouse disks and all data were lost.
Be careful, plenty of NAS' are affected by the Intel Atom C2000 bug. They are at that age now where they are failing, it's instant and you can't fix it. You should find out if your devices are affected and replace them before it's too late. Firewalls and many other devices are also affected.
I'm planning to buy a 220+ with either wd red plus or ironwolf Nas drives.
Is it worth it to spend up for HDD speeds (7200rpm?) I see anything below 8tb is automatically and intentionally slower.

will it be possible to experience all those features of synology throughout the series of your videos within a hypervisor (like vmware) if someone exactly follows your workings? could there be limitations if it is done in vmware? some of us might not have the ability to buy synology products.

Made the mistake of buying a DS220J. Worst device to have. Saving now for one which can act as a DAS such as those from Qnap that use thunderbolt or USB C and 2.5gb eth.
I like Synology as a product though.
When I upload from a PC over a network to my NAS, does NAS use BW from my local network or it just uses BW from the network that I uploaded from?

Hi David how to secure NAS synology device using firewall or ssl can you explain please or it will use router firewall or its own firewall.
I had a synology 914+ was great till the reset button failed and it constantly kept resetting. It massively dented my confidence in the products. As it effectively locked me out of the NAS, until I was able to get a replacement, which was very hard work. I got the NAS back, but ended up getting a QNAP drive which has proved more reliable, sadly the software is not as slick.
