I wouldn't call it a flex. At the time, soulfull, r&b style hip-hop singers were a dime a dozen in the mainstream. He did it to set himself apart, but sadly it "type cast" him so most never listened to any of his less edited work, and his autotune work got him real big.

mrbigg151 it became his signature sound. Same with Kanye, and Travis Scott. Travis autotunes his voice to match a guitar, much more than Kanye. T pains autotune was more for the sound he enjoyed, and needed because with his voice it made something recognizable and indistinguishable

There is no autotune at all, he does that naturally with his voice which is why some singers use it to refine their voice
There is definitely pitch correction but it’s mostly there to fix the errors from the recording equipment nothing to do with his singing

Auto tune isn't always used because people can't sing, sometimes it's used as a stylistic choice, with or with out the auto tune he's fricking amazing
Imogen Heap used a harmonizer in her 'Hide and Seek' song which sort of sounds like autotune but it is not. After that it became pretty common to use voice FXs, autotune is not present in all music today, but pitch correction is used 99.99% in all songs released now.
The thing is, he and alot of other artists only used Auto Tune to get a unique sound. But the bad singers started over using it and ruined the image of the system.

The Tiny Desk is completely raw. You can tell they ran something thru the vocals post tracking Version with the grand piano. But tiny desk has those imperfections yet if you really appreciate music; and you visualize the performance; you realize how much soul and passion he has for his art form.
