thanks for the note! I usually look at fees separately e.g. "total cost is 120k points + $800 CAD" (since paying more points to cover the taxes and fees isn't usually the best redemption) but always good to check the fees too!

where are you looking to travel instead of Asia? We have tutorials for most of the major regions if you search CZcams for Geobreeze Travel + Europe Geobreeze Travel + Africa Geobreeze Travel + South America Geobreeze Travel + tropical etc.
Cathay is actually really good to book JAL biz class since their award calendar opens up 360 days out vs. American/Alaska 330 days. It will cost more in miles with CX but easier to get CX miles since they have Amex & C1 transfer vs harder to get miles with AA and AS.
When trying to book the hello kitty plane on EVA from Chicago, does the EVA web site actually say that you are booking the hello kitty plane or is it going to be a gamble as to whether you get that plane or not?

Quick note, the Canada air flight has very high fees of 800$ in your example which is ~600 USD thus the effective cost is ~190k points vs 120k
