Saw her perform just two weeks ago. She closed the show with this song and still introduces it as "David Letterman's favorite Christmas song." 81 years old. She knocked it out of the park, naturally.

As a Grinch when it comes to Christmas carols, this was always my one exception. I loved and looked forward to Darlene's annual performance. When we knew Dave was retiring, Darlene's final performance was the first time I truly realized the show was ending, and it felt like Dave did too.
Yup. Jay Thomas telling his Lone Ranger story and Darlene Love singing this song is all the Christmas I care for. CZcams lets it live every year.

It was a personal Christmas tradition on mine to watch Darlene Love perform this song on Letterman each year. I really miss the show. :(
It is great to see the progression from no strings and a small chorus to the extravagant productions in later years that Darlene and the song deserved.
@karenbeads And to see the warmth between her and Dave grow over the years. He went from respecting her talent to really caring about her. Those appearances helped to reinvigorate her career.

It's pretty amazing she hasn't had to change the key as far as I know throughout her years. Just an incredibly powerful singer!

@@zachsmith3 I thought that was very well done, too. But what about the tempo? It sounded to me to be consistent all the way through. Did Paul and the drummer have that accurate a sense of tempo? Or did they use a metronome?

My allergies are terrible after watching this. I wish my dad were still around. This was our little tradition that we had for ourselves. He would have loved to have seen this.

Nice work on the editing. I know the key changed a couple times through the years and it blended right in. I've always appreciated the equal parts sincerity and over-the-top ridiculousness these annual performances took on. It's not Christmas until Darlene sings, Jay throws the football at the meatball and we hear the Lone Ranger story.

The song was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, along with Phil Spector, with the intention of being sung by Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes. According to Love, Ronnie Spector was not able to put as much emotion into the song as needed. Instead, Love was brought into the studio to record the song, which became a large success over time and Love's signature tune."

As a 90s kid who always tried to stay up late to watch Dave, this brings back so many memories.
I love this one, it's one of my top favorites. Makes me sing out loud, cheers me up, makes me nostalgic, and then makes me cry! So many emotions all rolled into 1.
