  • Dr. Lauren of Lewiston Veterinary Clinic in Lewiston, Idaho demonstrates the proper technique and benefits of a thorough bull breeding soundness exam. This minimally invasive approach ensures the beef producer that his bull has quality semen, and a healthy body and reproductive tract for the busy job of breeding cows all season. For beef producers, testing bulls prior to the breeding season is a smart economic decision, as a sub-fertile bull is expensive to feed and will contribute to more open cows at preg check time.
    The exam evaluates:
    1. Feet and eyes (if he can't walk or see, he can't breed)
    2. Body condition (slightly over-conditioned is preferred)
    3. Testicle health and size (30 cm minimum for most breeds)
    4. Accessory sex glands (prostate, seminal vesicles and ampulae)
    5. Penis and sheath (screen for penile hematomas and scarring)
    6. Erection and ejaculation (screen for persistent frenulum and libido)
    7. Semen motility and morphology (motion and shape of sperm)
    8. Infectious disease (screening for trichomoniasis); Required in Idaho
