      @@V-95K If they would’ve had the graphics of the first trailer they showed, i would’ve gotten the game after my first desynchronization in MK1 😂 but after no real updates when Khameleon dropped, I went on ahead and bought Tekken. No regrets

    i hate how every MK has to be drastically different from the last. all they had to do was go back and make a mk9/x style game and everyone is happy.

      Exactly there is no legacy . Tekken always feels like Tekken even if they do some different things . Mk they try to build a new game from the ground up which is dumb ASL tbh.

      I think MK1 has better gameplay than MKX. The product itself is trash but the core gameplay is the best NRS has ever done imo.

      @Realmktombrady have you ever actually played an mk game ? I disagreed with damn near all of your points in this video. Mk11 is leagues better than mk1 I just bought the game the other day and can already tell you it’s the worst mk. The gameplay is slower, worse combos, dropped features, cameos messed up gameplay, boring characters, art style is pretty but doesn’t feel like mk at all, lame X-rays, no modes, no crypt, terrible costumes, customization I could go on and on only played 3 days havnt even touched invasion or story mode but I can tell you this game makes mk11 look like the 🐐

    I think Hector Sanchez was a BIG reason of MK9’s success. His role and touch with the fans did many positive things for the game.

    I believe the lack of a more evolved Krypt or Konquest mode really hurt the draw for casual fans. SF6 had World Tour mode which was very well received by casuals and raised the bar for what people expected from the single player portion of other fighting games. Invasions in theory sounded cool but in reality it feels like a half fleshed out feature they slapped in at the very end of development.

      Absolutely spot on 💯. I LOVE MK! But I'm a very casual fan. I'm more of lore and story guy.
      Can you imagine if they made a new Konquest mode like the new Prince of Persia Metroidvania genre? It'll be 20 hours minimum. That would be so amazing

      SF6 is the most accessible entry for newbies whilst still being Incredibly difficult to master.... Plus the whole reworked engine is something else.

    I checked steam last night before going to bed. There where approx. 1500 people in Mk1, 2400 in Mk11. 4700 in tekken 7 and 20000 in sf6 .. Pretty bad sign..

      technically if you look at steam numbers of MKX & MK11 they have the same (even less retention) than MK1 in the first 5 months. they drop just as (more) drastically from launch to 5th month in. i think people are blowing this out of proportion. seriously look up the first 5 months on steam charts after MKX & MK11's releases if you don't believe me.
      if it's a bad sign it's a bad sign for all 3 of these games. js. :)) MK is either dead as a whole or maybe it's time to recognize steam playerbase literally means nothing for MK. hell the peak on steam for all their games has been less than 30k. it's not where mk fans play the game.

      ​@@tracycook3556yes as discussed tl death out of the fighting game trinity it bolsters the largest casual audience among the 3. Theres infinitely more casuals on console than pc as to run a game like MK1 youd need a pretty decent rig that would cost more than either console.

      ​If there is one thing I've always noticed with NRS games viewer numbers will be rather high. others are below it. But, the numbers for other titles go up over time and have massive increase. MK numbers are either Stationary or decrease. That's all platforms and tournaments ​@@tracycook3556

      The problem with MK as a game and franchise: even with the massive number of sales, casuals only buy the game out of habit. There's no true love and support for the MK community and the competitive scene but these people to keep the hype of the game alive.
      What's the point of a million console players daily if none of them enter events, support Pro players' content, or even just watch big & local tournaments.
      NRS needs invest in what Capcom has been successful at; turning as many casual "drop the game after a week," into "competitive play lover." Because there's no better advertising for a FIGHTING GAME literally about a tournament, then having more people SUPPORT TOURNAMENT PLAY.

      This is such a nonsense point, and it does not follow. Not pigeonholing a character into a specific type of playstyle limits player expression? I've had FAR more player expression in this game than I did in Mk9, MKx, and MK11, and I play Sub Zero. Just about every Sub Zero I've played plays differently too. Unfortunately, some people only find success with a playstyle that makes it seem like they hate life.

      Heavily disagree, the kameos shouldn't have more of a focus than your actual character. Wish they had just made this a proper tag game and fully fleshed out the movesets to give everyone more options and personality ​@@vexcxxyalt

      ​@Zimx02 most if not all characters have mostly the same strike/throw/shimmy playstyle in mk1. There is obviously differences from character to character, but most chars have the same core gameplan. If you could play mk11 at a high level, you play mk1 like 70% the same way, just with kameos and meter management.
      MKX 95% of roster was rushdown 50/50s, MK11 & MK1 most roster is strike/throw/shimmy. Kung Lao kameo gives entire roster near unblockables. I have no idea how you see mk9 that way as it had anti-zoners, zoners, rushdown, armor, trap, mixup/vortex, defensive, footsie, and a bunch of hybrid characters. But to each their own

      @@enigmatic7303 also noticed a lot of enhanced moves in mk1 don't have unique animations like in older games, most of them just do more damage or extend the combo. Really feels like everything is so incomplete

    im just waiting for a new MK, im not sure why they want to reinvent the wheel
    1- NO TIME TRAVEL OR ALTERNATE UNIVERSE
    2- good gameplay mechanic, speed it up a little bit
    3- MK lore it supposed to be dark a little mysterious
    4- just put MK characters i dont want a damn terminator i want sektor
    5- make a konquest mode and get rid of micro transactions, boom there i fix MK

      There's about 3 characters that can really keep you locked in the corner. MK1 is better than MK11 100%, 11 was terrible. You have armour options, delayed wake up, hard read pokes or standing jabs to counter a majority of set ups in MK1. It's fighting game basics, MK11 got players too reliant on scrubby gimmicks

      The people who made Shaolin Monks and things like Konquest mode are long gone and not on staff at NRS anymore, if they did Shaolin Monks 2 it would be a cinematic story with chapters like every NRS game since MKvDC

    Hold on bro…..ain’t no way you said there was no zoning in mk11 when Erron black, Cetrion, Scarlet, and robocop. Whether you agree to it or not they are considered “Zoners” lol. These characters have effective play styles to keep you out, it may not be as egregious as other “zoners” like robocop being slower, good timing and great situational playstyle gets the job done.

    Jax Mk11 character design was tight ass hell. The animation on the quad grab was top tier. The way Jax switches grabs and talk shit after each slam is legendary. I wish Mk11 Jax was in Mk1

      Tom is right, if you think that mk11 was good in any regard gameplay wise then you have no idea what a good fighting game is.
      Mk11 for me also is pure garbage gameplay wise. Never been so disapointed by a game like mk11.

      Sadly... Yes. MKX got much more RIGHT than it got wrong... Heck, in retrospect, even its much maligned "Variations" have proven to be the most effective system for diversifying a roster that NRS have come up with. Conversely, MK1 feels more generic than MK11! Be it gameplay and atmosphere, or its guest characters and functionality (online notwithstanding -- NRS just cannot do online), MKX was as close as NRS came to catching lighting in a bottle. Had they released MKX: Remake -- on the ground that they needed more time to baste Ij3 (which is what MK1 started out life as) -- and added some stages (the one thing MKX lacked) and, perhaps, made a few NPC's playable (hacks already allow for it), the game would have sold millions, and set up their future game releases. Instead, MK1 is another nail in the WB-NRS relationship coffin...

    I think what people are forgetting is that Mortal Kombat became a mainstream fighting game, not because of its competitiveness, but because of the violence and gore. For the most part, performing fatalities and brutalities are what most people are into.

    SF6 I've got 114hrs and counting vs. MK1 only 48hrs and don't plan to come back unless something big changes, and this is from someone whose always been tunnel visioned into the MK IP.

      I loved MK11 too, not only for the speed but the game is packed with so much content. Also glad I’m not the only one that feels like MK1 is slow and heavy almost.

      Yeah, I played MK11 like crazy. I think I have more hours logged on MK1 at this point, but that was just to grind out the characters. I would honestly rather play MK11. I don't miss the Krypt (I think it's boring and pointless) but I did enjoy the variety of towers and especially the co-op towers. Why they cut that, I don't know.
      I also just feel like MK1 is just always trying to pry more money out of me and it is annoying. I'm happy to pay for things (sometimes), but this feels like they are constantly bombarding me with "give us more money, more money, more money!" and that gets under my skin.

    So as someone who doesn't follow "MK" much at all...yeah, even I've been feeling like something has been up with "MK1".
    Like, I barely hear anyone talking about the game in general. And even past that, the little that I have heard has largely has been negative. Divisive story, lack of game modes, assists being unbalanced (something about Jax causing an unblockable loop at a tournament), surprisingly bad online, the Switch version, the lottery system, disappointing guest choices, etc.
    And again, I'm like ultra-casual when it comes to "MK". But even in comparison, "MKX" and"MK11" both had far more buzz surrounding them even well after this amount of time after their releases. It's to the point I somewhat forget "MK1" even released not too long ago

      MK VS DC was probably more fun and has more replay value than MK1 that's a sad fact. Maybe the gaming industry will finally turn to listening go back to the good old ways if a titan like Mortal Kombat falls. So I'm okay with that

    There is something i have noticed the past few years that games are getting praised at launch and after a while people then go...actually it is not as good as we thought and seems on many genres, Halo infinite, New world, Diablo 4 as well as Mk1

    i played mk11 every day till mk1 came out, but I'm not a pro. So this maybe an unpopular option, but I personally like the gameplay of mk11 way more than mk1. All mk1 has is chip damage and big combos . MK11 was more tactical, and you could actually punish people for mistakes. My ultimate game would be mk11 but with breakers and air combos

      @@ZarathosDaimaoh the main problem with most of the NRS games is that there’s such a huge gap between the top characters and the lesser characters. The game becomes stale because in order to win you have to use certain characters and copy and paste the same strategies to win.

    20:25 I think I understand what you, and Max are saying and you may not necessarily disagree. But MK11 is actually faster than MK1 in its gameplay. However because there is more to lookout for in MK1, it may not feel that way in the moment. I went back to play a few matches on MK11, and the game did in fact feel very fast to me, coming from MK1, although still slower than MKX. The animations in MK1 are a lot more drawn out [slowed down from the first hit], and I have noticed the high number of timeouts in high lvl MK1 games as compared to 11. I remember when MK1 first came out and I sent my sister some of my footage, one of her first comments was she noticed how sluggish the game looked compared to 11, which says a lot since she barely plays these game and even she could notice that. Would encourage you to see for yourself

      MK1 has faster movement speed and the pace of neutral is faster than 11s. What is slower in MK1 compared to 11 is the speed of animations which make combos feel slower.

      Tom really hates mk11 so that's a big reason why he may not be able to see that. Even the frame data supports 11 being faster multiple characters had 9 frame mids . I think in mk1 Johnny is the only person with a 9 frame mid and a 6 frame d1.

      @@awesometaco8001 I wouldn't agree on faster neutral, and the movement feel character dependent, but on average with block dashing taken into consideration- about the same as 11. I agree with you: the slower animations are so slow- and so many strings are 3-4+ hits whereas in 11 most strings you had 2 hits to hit confirm

      @@awesometaco8001MK11 movement varied by each character, some had faster dashes, but the fastest characters in that game moved FAST. I’m talking wave dashing with Fujin, Mileena, Rain, etc. they were extremely fast. Idk if anyone in MK1 rivals that, maybe Johnny, but I think there’s more consistent better movement across the roster in 1, but it’s not as fast as the fastest in 11 if that makes sense.

    I love the video tom but your a little to blame as well. Casual players made these complaints in season one. Your response was we suck at the game. You even made that video about competitive vs Casuals players. Now that the casual players have moved on its how do we save the game? I'm not sure but more cameo usage isn't it. Your views on the casual players gave rise to people like fate. While most people don't like him including me he was saying how the casual community felt. Pro players called him an idiot and it felt like you called all casual players idiots for not enjoying the game.     As a HUGE MK fanboy, MK1 is the first game that made me quit playing after 3 months... The Kameo System is just bad for the game. Characters have no Identity beside pairing into some safe gimmick to win online. Maybe I will come back for Ermac since i gave em the money for it. There is soo much wrong with the polish and modes, and ye the online is unplayable.
    Looking at the Suicide Squad game, seems like WB Games is the new canncer ruining some great development Studios. Guess they dont care, they got my money.

    It's like a endless cycle, mk1 mk2 mk3 then mk4 made the franchise crash. Then they comes back from the dead with 3d era with huge content, cool story, great visuals, a revamped Mortal Kombat, MKDA, MKD, and MKA.
    Then again they crash with MKvsDC.
    MK9 comes out, revitalize the franchise like never before, huge success and i mean not only in the sells department, MK is praise again as a good fighters.
    MKX follow this trend, as always with good new feature (stance), run is back, everyone like to watch the game in tournaments.
    MK11 suffer from design flaws, political stuff no one care about but overall in the end, mk11 is just not the best mk, like Armageddon was.
    According to what we see now right now, MK1 may be another "crash" for the franchise.

      It's definitely a problem cause of zoning and kameos. 1st thing coming to mind is scorpion. A lot of it is waiting for the spear, dash a bit, duck the sareena, dash up a bit more, wavedash a bit more, they jump kick into spear or empty jump and grab.
      Like man I'm not gonna say I'm good at the game but I also won't say it's a skill issue when you get hit by shit you react to..... because of input delay
      So all these kameos make you be slow in your approach.... dudes walking back, you throw a few projectiles and you trade with frost kameo.....
      And this is besides the point already but these omni-man players that you start beating up just decide to get mad and abuse the lao hat and the overhead superman so they can then proceed to teabag at the end of a round....🙄

    MK11 felt faster in my opinion. Even outside charscters that disrespect neutral like kotal, fujin, kabal, Jacqui (that you mentioned). Wave dashing felt more fluid and (for lack of better term) "speedy". Characters like kollector and jax while slow could dash block far more effectively than characters in mk1. Idk if that is caused by the crappy netcode in mk1, but i think it could olay a factor.

Im one of those people who have the FGC DNA and got love for all them beyond a casual sense and it makes me just as happy as it would a casual player.     MK11 needed the SFV treatment... We should've still gotten dlc content for that game and MK1 should've been released in 2025. MK1 is a watered down version of MK11 and looks and feels very mobile cheap. It's honestly painful to be a MK fan right now. It's embarrassing.

      MK11 was boring at anything above a basic level of gameplay -- it was too stilted, and felt like a "linear" fighting game, compared to MKX's "open world". Having said that, the MK11 being a more or less "komplete" product, makes comparisons unfair; especially given MK1 was released in effective beta, and it still unfinished in even fundamental aspects, like online functionality, offline content, a fully-fledged roster _et al.._

    I hate MK1. I played every MK since the 90s, I really love the MK franchise, I love the characters and the story. I dont care about E-Sports or "the pros" and I dont care about 50% combos. So, I love MK11 more. I really hate Invasion Mode. Its like a mobile game, its grindy and boring. I loved the towers of time and the krypt in MK11 more. I hate kamos and I hate the character designs and the god damn ugly skins, even the shop ones. I wish I could refund this crap game on steam. I loved every MK before 1. They ruin my interest in the franchise with that crap game. DLC wont save the game.

      Actually, the game _Was_ Ij3, only re-purposed at the eleventh hour, due to the cancellation of the Justice League 2 film. Ed Boon admitted to as much, just qualifying the fact behind _"We'd have needed two more years to complete Ij3, and WB could not wait that long"._

    You may not like MK11 as a "Fighting Game" BUT as a Mortal Kombat Game it's absolutely Amazing!
    Being able to create 5 different variations, & create their names & make some of them MK related names & things only the most loyal MK fans know! & get! 😊.
    All the different Outros & Intros I loved! And I know this stuff is more MK relevant then it is fighting game relevant....
    But what can I say, I'm a way bigger fan of Mortal Kombat, then I am a fighting games... 😊

    100% MK feels like an eternity to find matches! Especially over other fighters out there like GGS Tekken 7 and sf6, for me at least. Just sitting there to get declined or have the game desync after 1 round completely makes me not even want to waste my time in the mode. I feel like it felt the same in MK 11 as well. I know I play on PC so the player base is much smaller than Xbox and PS and there lies another one of the issues is that cross-play doesn't exist for my platform and based off of MK11 it will most likely be the same as that game. Just kinda feels bad,

      Absolutely. The game was rushed and is a repurposing of Injustice 3 -- facts, alone, which point to the game being "officially" dropped within 24 months; and much sooner in reality. If they are still releasing DLC in 2026, I'll dance the jig naked at the Super Bowl... They will announce "Kombat Pack 2" with the story expansion, in the middle of this year, then milk that for 12 months, as the core developers a steadily moved to another project (if they have not moved on already).

    Imo Mortal Kombat 9 was peak to me. I kept buying the new ones thinking that the experience would be compare to that one. It was so good I got my friends in college who don't play fightings hooked on it and actually get good. The game was complex enough and simple enough. Archtypes in that game were clear and it was pretty balanced, with the exception of Kratos. Microtransactions were nonexistent. The character roster was fantastic. NRS changes too much for no reason.

      I think WB wanted NRS to test the waters with the microtransactions in MK9. Then WB told them to push a little bit with MKX. Then we know how it went to MK11 and worse with MK1.
      Would've been nice if NRS took the core fighting fundamentals of MK9 and improved it with the next games. But alas they had the keep on changing the gameplay/mechanics with each game.

    Haven't finished the video but this narrative that pros & content creators matter less because they're "less than 1%" is false, objectively. Together, they hold more influence than any other single entity in the community. Millions of people tune in for their opinion on all platforms. This includes large youtubers and reporters outside the community.
    They influence a massive chunk of a game's marketing. They have to be satisfied if a competitive game is to last.

      You my friend are absolutely right, unpopular opinion but I don't think mk1 is that bad. But because pro players and content creators/influencers have been banging on that it's bad game for a while now everyone in the community now thinks the same even though some casuals actually don't have an issue with the game.
      The problem MK has is it's only audience is in the west and fgc is basically the opinions of the west. FGC is always complaining even SF6 has had some backlash the difference is other parts of the world don't care and keep those games alive. So while the west tried to talk smack about sf6 the Asian Market don't care and are keeping the game alive mk doesn't have that it just has the west as an audience.
      The sheep mentally in the FGC is quite bad as you said people literally hang on to the words of fgc content creators to decide if a fighting game is good on or not instead of if they themselves enjoy it.

    Have you seen that 90% completed hidden tag mode in the game's files? That's how I imagined the kameos to be before launch, game looks fast and fun as shit.

    This is going to be my TLDR take on MK1:
    I didn't love MK11 but I was a top 1% player for the length of time I cared to play it.
    (I am also biased to MK11 bc of all the great people I met through the game. It was bc of MK11 and the people that played it that I made it through some of the hardest times of my life)
    It took me no longer than 4 days to figure out that I would not have any fun playing MK1 because I immediately could see how much kameos made the game. Yes we had more than our fair share of complaints about MK11, but I will say that even that game provided a tiny bit more in terms of gameplay than MK1. Especially in the majority of MK1 it does not seem to matter what the general frame data for characters is, we are funneled into watching kameos used as safety. Regardless of what any character in the game can do we mostly see the same gameplan out of a lot of characters in terms of how they use the kameo system.
    A big complaint people had about MK11 was how the meter system rewarded people for doing nothing but waiting.....I see no difference here in this game for the most part. While meter is built differently in this game kameos regenerate quickly and fill that gap and continue to reward sloppy gameplay by keeping players safe after any "risk" they take.
    While MK11 didn't offer the best creativity we've ever seen it did offer more character depth than I feel we see in MK1. I actually loved how given the MK11 climate we still saw strong communities for each character. (I was very active with the community during MK11 and I loved the little groups each character had behind them)
    Obviously the top players will still find ways to be amazing at the newest game, but I feel that this game doesn't have too much in terms of gameplay to retain those players that aren't the absolute top tier.
    I know people have debates about buffing/nerfing certain things about our NRS games, but given the foundation we have here with MK1 I don't feel like any amount of fixing NRS can provide will scratch that itch we have as players of their game.
    These are just my opinions, please feel free to let me know your points of view

    Mk1 is my first fighting game ever. I really like the online play, I think it's ok in balancing and extremely fun. I just don't get the criticisms. Of course, the game is rushed, it lacks content, net code is no good, desyncs are annoying, invasions are boring, cosmetics lack variety etc etc. But the actual gameplay, which is the only thing I care about, is great to me, I can't get enough

    The only things NRS has to do is:
    • Fix online Netcode and Dsyncs.
    • Buff bottom half of the characters to Johnny/Ashrah/Geras/Kung Lao/Sindel's strength and Buff Kameos to Khameleons strength and utility.
    • Offline single player modes need fixed like Invasions Mode and Towers need 5X the XP gained & koins. If not make invasions the Krypt when expansion comes out. But just increasing rewards per win so it's not grindfest it would mostly fix it.
    Then they can add modes, more features, then give characters more customization & more good skins instead of color swaps. Then add 1 more or 2 additional gear pieces to have better options for customizing your characters. Kameos/DLC need more customization.

    Its funny cause i played mkx the other day and i played 97 games with a guy and didnt notice a thing if i play more 10 or more games in mk1 i feel bored and exhausted i cant even watch the tournaments for mk1 unless its grand finals cause i cant stomach the game that long

    I liked mk11 I wasn't bored at all but hey I'm in the minority . Mk1 the cameo stuff is just a gimmicky thing that ends up being boring because it's implemented in a shit way . Online I guess I'm lucky because I don't have any problems finding games but I do get the de sync which is unacceptable .

      Yeah I put a ridiculous amount of hours into MK11 and never really got bored. I’m done with MK1 already and redownloading MK11 as I type. There is only so much stormcell into kano I can take before it puts me to sleep

      Mk11 had Terminator as its main grappler and fittingly enough also mk11 had a Robocop as its main zoner Jax has always been a grappler in every MK game

    Awesome points. I know lots of people komplaining about mk 1. It's obviously gonna be better over time. Hoping for 1v1 to kome back. Then everyone will be jumping back on and praising. I'll always be a fan. Always have been since mk 1 and 2 on Sega. I totally see your points as well. Totally agree

    I enjoyed mk11 far more than mk1. MK1’s movement is weird, the jumping is too floaty. I’d be here typing all damn day if I said everything I didn’t like about. MKX was the best, give me more of that.

    I honestly don't see why NRS couldn't just make a traditional Tag Team VS mode like in MK9 and make the Kameo characters playable. Like I understand trying to make a sequel with a whole new set of mechanics to keep it interesting, but I feel like the MK11 had a better time with keeping players interested due to the custom variations, despite the breakaway mechanic being a terrible way to escape being juggled.

    I beg to differ. The kameos' little life should also be a lifebar around their meter or under the main characters lifebar. It should also be separated from the characters' health when it comes to damage. If a kameo gets hit the number of times that their life is, they should be knocked out for the remainder of the round.
    If you get flawless blocks, you should be able to build that life meter back up fully to bring the kameo back into play. Including nullifying damage, changing frame data to more punishable data, and less pushback. A kameo getting hit shouldn't take from a flawless victory, neither. They should give us double flawless if both remain untouched and quadruple flawless victory if you can do it both rounds.
    That will bring a new level of excitement for all players. Kameos need to be adjusted upwards to be on the same level as Strker, Lao, and pre-patched Cyrax. The characters also need to be buffed up to the levels of Cage, Kenshi, Geras, Mileena, Ashra, Li Mei, and pre-patch Raiden/Baraka (I'll give my reasons on my selections later).
    On the kameo having the ability to be brought back to life. In the second round, if the kameo is hit by a killing shots like (physical hits, projectiles, fatal blows into, or a classic uppercut brutal). The players should have the ability to kill the kameos, too, with a brutality to eliminate them from coming back in the possible last round. From a string, projectiles with brutality requirements, or D2s.
    Some characters need hit regions adjustments as well, like Quan Chi S2 should be a mid, Scorpion, S4 should also be a mid, Tanya drill should be a low, etc. The same could be said for the kameos, too. Fatal blows need less pushback on them and should be death on block, no questions ask. Some characters need expressive freedom like reptile with his force balls not having options and taking so long to recover from it that he can't move with them on screen.
    I can go on all day, especially with the reason I listed the characters I have above. If anyone is interested in that, just ask me what's up?
