If classical music is racist then The RCM should stop teaching it. Then where would they be? You can only go so far with Reggae.

We dealt with this in the seventies just a way of getting in more money surely. The reason ‘classical’ music is no longer called that but rather ‘western art music’ is to acknowledge this. Indeed so with Women composers.

Women were also not included in these histories because we weren’t allowed to be educated as the men were in music and the arts. Also in science, math, finances, etc.

How about they teach a course on how, despite 200 years of slavery in the US, the African diaspora managed to change the world through the creation of Jazz and blues, which has lead to a whole range of incredible genres like soul and and rnb and pop. So much positivity to be taught and instead they focus on this.
So what is the point of the Royal college of music? If not to learn how music works and studying the best examples. I enjoy blues and jazz. I also enjoy classical orchestral music and opera. Music is music and it complements poetry and dance. It’s a varied art form. It’s not carved from stone. It exists in the head. And is an entirely human art form irrelevant to animals and plants.
Rap music surpasses the classics and will be around when the latter is long forgotten about. Remember the rapfest at the concert for the 95th birthday of her late Majesty. Didn't know she was such a fan. Was no doubt played by royal request so she could 'bodypop' at Windsor Castle. The BBC didn't disappoint her.
I wonder how these non-whites would feel about this course: Lang Lang, Yo-yo Ma, Yuja Wang, Sarah Chang (just to mention a few). I'm far more interested in their insight vs. some 'crap' created by a diversity manager (who is most likely a white woman). Aperently, it's only an elective, until Labour wins the election.

Japan, China and Korea have enthusiastically adopted Western classical music and have produced many wonderful musicians. Many Asians study in Europe. As for black people, in general they are not interested in classical music and very few study it, though nothing stops them from doing so. Highlighting skin colour by the RCM is racist in itself and serves no purpose today.

I'm Sikh and love classical music esp. Shostakovich and many of the 20th century greats like Mahler, Messiaen. Western classical music by it's by very nature is bound to be Eurocentric and 'white' dominated. It should be appreciated for it's own inherent qualities and universality and as the most complex form of musical expression created by humans. All this sheer wokery and so called colonization of mathematics, literature is just another race grifting pile of nonsense. It's depressing the way this country is going with the tail being wagged by a small minority of lefty loons.
Are they studying Classical music in terms of the genre or the era? If you're looking at the era, most western classical music was written predominantly white men and women. Doesn't make it racist. The classical genre (style) spans a much broader range of times and composers and has developed over the centuries.
Maybe trainee doctors should do courses on how white men made the medical breakthroughs of the past, saving millions of lives and easing terrible pain. Don't concentrate on their achievements, just that they were white. Male dominance in everything was how it was in history. It cannot be undone. But, Mary Seacole was the exception - she was the founder of modern medicine remember. Perhaps a more relevant course would be the study of patriarchal socities today, starting with lslam and going right through the third world. You won't find any in the west.
