    Sit right back, and you'll hear a tale...
    Back in episode 203 ("Jungle Goddess"), Joel and the bots performed a Honeymooners-like skit about what would happen if a jungle-born woman were transplanted to 1950s America. At the end, Joel introduces Crow as "Art Crow" (like Art Carney). Later, in episode 402 ("The Giant Gila Monster"), one of the drawings of Crow from a viewer is captioned as "Art." It has the standard weaknesses of B cinema, and the long explanation is pretty clumsy, but I find the story of a deformed man on a revenge spree finding a strange love with a blind woman compelling and interesting. I find the deaths tragic and the character of Rondo compelling. I mean, it's cheesy, and MatB riff it well, but this is one of those MST3k movies I would be fine watching on its own, one night in a drive in, my arm around a lady :)

    After leaving high school, Rondo joined the Florida National Guard to pursue a military career. Rondo first saw battle in the Mexican border war and then in France in World War I. There, he was exposed to poison gas, was hospitalized with lung injury, and was subsequently medically discharged from service and consigned to a pension.
    Returning to Tampa, he took employment as a reporter for the Tampa Tribune, where he worked until 1936 when he moved to Hollywood.
    Sometime after his exposure to the poison gas, Rondo began to develop acromegaly, a slowly progressive medical condition, which brings mutations after a person has matured physically, and reached their adult height.
    Acromegaly (a disorder of the pituitary gland) causes deformation of bones in the head, hands and feet, and internal and external soft tissues. The body resumes production of growth hormone, but as the bone structure can no longer continue symmetric growth (as in giantism). According to all available sources, Rondo's acromegaly was a result of the poison gas he'd been exposed to, though it is almost always caused by a tumor on the pituitary.
    This was filmed in 1945. Rondo was going blind because of his exposure to the poison gas in WW1.
    Rondo died Feb. 2nd 1946 of a heart attack at the age of 51.

Here in Brazil, chicken is the protein saviour when the economy goes south (goes south ... hehehe) because the price is always affordable to a point where each family can get more than one chicken a week.

    There's a lot of good riffing in this ep, not gonna lie, but at the same time, I gotta agree with Mary Jo Pehl, looking back on this episode just feels more and more awkward as time goes on, because, like. Even if he wasn't very good in his acting skills, Rondo Hatton was still a human being who was being horribly exploited by Universal's ghouls because he needed the money. The riffs about his looks just feel awkward and mean.

    • @boomboom6577
      @boomboom6577 Před 2 lety +1

      @@mikedawson7695 it is still mean. She didn’t say mean-spirited. Ribbing can be mean whether the intent is mean or not. It’s about the fact that people with deformities were commodities. Now that we know better, we reflect back on it and recognize when we’ve contributed to such social viewpoints. MST3k creators were stunningly progressively and self-aware and responsible in a time when no one had to be any of these thing on TV. Thank goodness pehl is still thinking about her work and considering its impact. It’s called giving a damn even when you don’t have to. I respect her all the more for her reflexivity years later.
      Stop gatekeeping. We can love the show and the cast and still have complicated thoughts about the body of work. You don’t know them. So don’t presume to backtrack on comments that pehl herself made. And you don’t get to decide when ribbing is just good fun or actually mean. Asshole.
      And for the record: they have occasionally made mean spirited jokes. Rethink how you see the world. Your view is reductive and also fundamentally incorrect and lazy. It’s a shame because pehl, Joel, Frank, etc. have managed to keep the history of this show clean by being smart and self aware thinkers who are accountable for the tone of the show and what it gives to the world. And here you come with your half-ass armchair bullshit being precisely the kind of lazy-ass thinker they are trying not to be.
      You have no commentary to offer but you want to shut down this person’s thoughtful commentary? You could have said nothing and that would have been a better contribution.
